The Bear (2022)
Why?
Having recently watched the excellent Slow Horses and Reservation Dogs, this series left me primarily just wondering - why?
Why did I spend time watching it, mostly.
Possibly due to the hype surrounding it in our newspapers, maybe because it makes a change from foreign language series, maybe because I'm laid up at home with an injury - in which case the painkillers should have dulled my senses into just going along with it?
Or, perhaps, in case it was going to improve and I didn't want to miss something as good as the rating might suggest.
The acting is fine but the constant shouting isn't.
There don't seem to be many times when someone isn't either yelling or loudly acting up in some way.
To be fair, they probably do shout a lot in many commercial kitchens but it's so unrelenting and overwhelming.
Not sure that I can summon up the energy or enthusiasm to watch series 2.
Reservation Dogs (2021)
So Worth Watching
Firstly, it was wonderful to see some old faces again. In particular, Gary Farmer whose unforgettable performance in the underrated Heater will live with me forever.
The characters interact brilliantly and are played convincingly, with every indication that this series might have been a lot of fun to make.
Following a bunch of youngsters and their families and elders through some difficult times in their already less than straightforward lives as they learn and mature, there are many precious moments.
The humour, of which there is a great deal, is sometimes quite absurd and balances the serious issues.
I hope that Sterlin Harjo continues to forge a path and encourage the many talents that might otherwise be overlooked.
Slow Horses (2022)
So Cool
And refreshing, funny and so worth watching.
Unlike the currently prevailing formula for this type of series, there's real grit behind the characters and an abundance of humour, notably in Series 3.
This one smells like London.
All of the people involved are very effective actors who interact impeccably.
Gary Oldman portrays his rather unique character brilliantly with many throwaway lines, some of which really deserve immortality - or a dedicated webiste.
The other Slow Horses are a very mixed bunch of rejects and vary in effectiveness but mainly all more than earn their keep.
Chrisoppher Chung in particular provides an interesting counterpoint to his comrades.
Mick Jagger's theme tune works.
Really hoping that Season 4 will not be too much influenced by Hollywood.
This is top of my watch list every time for all of those reasons.
Copenhagen Cowboy (2022)
With added Kojima
It was slightly amazing to find this is whilst checking in on Netflix as my intention had previously been not to renew my my sub. This production gives me hope that they are open to more interesting projects than the usual formulaic ones that seem to prevail.
As others have mentioned, the first couple of episodes are a bit slow but it improves a great deal - just go with it.
The cinematography is excellent and it must be good to watch on 'phones which I might have tried were my eyesight better.
Certainly, the use of colour creates some memorable shots.
It was also good to see some of the Pusher cast again and a second series will be eagerly awaited.
Harry & Meghan: The Complete Story (2022)
Waste of time and money
In a world where we are still experiencing massive human rights abuses and suffering (Iran, China, the former Soviet Union, Asia, Africa for a few), the complaints being aired here are beyond trivial.
I am not a Monarchist so finding myself defending them against the endless drivel spouted by these two crazies is seriously weird.
To sum up, two privileged and spoilt brats complaining that their families did not and do not comply with their view of the world.
Times change.
Harry - have you ever considered that each generation raises its children differently? They all probably did their best in the circumstances. Mine did. I did it differently and so will my children.
Even the U. K. Press has evolved in it's treatment of the Royal Family - to such an extent that it appears that these programmes have had to use footage of paparazzi mobbing various other persons of interest, some of which appear to have been altered a bit.
The Prince & Princess of Wales appear to have managed to reach some sort of balance in this respect, as Princess Anne did before them.
In his short time as King, Charles has started modernising the Monarchy, not because her late Majesty's way was 'wrong' but because he is of a younger generation with his own ideas.
The next monarch will doubtless have different ideas - that's how we evolve.
Sadly, it seems that Harry & Meghan will never be able to see the world from anyone else's point of view or even see very much of it at all.
