Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)
Beautiful scenery
I really enjoyed this movie, it's not the best I've watched this year, however I was engrossed in the story the whole time.
I would really like to read the book now, As I've read in other reviews that it is superior.
The scenery is absolutely beautiful and the more "ambient sounds of the marsh, do a lot to draw you into the story, with out these details I don't think I would've enjoyed this movie as much as I did.
The acting from some people felt a bit stilted and I was certainly frustrated with many of the characters decisions but to enjoy a movie I don't have to love every character and the choices they make. They do portray Humans after all.
I didn't find the "twist" overly surprising. Not going to spoil it but I figured the murderer was who they were.
Overall a good, well made movie but I'm not likely to watch again or even really recommend.
The English (2022)
Intense, quiet, not completely predictable
First off. I love Emily Blunt, so I'm biased, always. I went into this Mini Series expecting to enjoy it just from the trailer alone.
I binged all episodes as quickly as I could.
The sweeping landscapes were beautifully used, I'm a sucker for this type of cinematography. The music was so atmospheric, it really worked well together.
Blunt' s acting was very believable, her emotional output was incredible. I loved that her character was soft spoken (at times sort of silly) but also with a spin of steel.
Chaske Spencer was a very good choice for the role. At times he was very "typically" old world cowboy but it didn't take from the show, and I appreciated the compassion they gave his character but no Saviour Complex.
I always love a bit of dry humour thrown in.
It wasn't black and white, there were many nuances to all the characters. Bad guys who do good things, good guys who do bad things. All people doing stupid things too.
On a different note, I appreciated that we saw period typical violence, but that sexual violence was not graphic, and Gore was kept mostly off screen, we know it happened but we don't always have to see it in minute detail.
This show for me had a quiet intensity that kept me on the edge of my seat. I really loved it. But I'm afraid I might be ruined for all other shows for a while, as this was just so good.
Walker: Independence (2022)
I don't know how y'all watched this
So I don't know how anybody watched this past the first 10 minutes of the first episode.
I hadn't watched the OG Walker and only clicked on this show because it was recommended after I watched The English.
Everything was bad in those first few minutes. The innacurate hair, eyebrows and underclothes of the main character, the stupid decision to stop your wagon on the side of a trail for an annoying montage of making out... survival is paramount. Nobody would do that.
I turned it off, first impression was this is a poorly done "western" with no regard to historical accuracy or real people. It actually made me quite angry, there is no excuse now days. Bad writing, poor acting, whoever produced this clearly doesn't care. Not worth watching a full episode whatsoever.
