Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Can't Wait For What's Next.....
I had a date with my adult kids, 24 & 21. My wife never got in to the Apes movies. I've been a fan since seeing the first one with Charlton Heston & Roddy McDowall, 1968 but I was only 3 then so saw them sometime in the 70's. The TV series was cool too.
So we saw the Imax version, comfy seats, ready for the ride.
It starts off slow, amazing imagery. Colours abound - Noah looks identical to Caesar, must be in the lineage being multiple generations in the future.
The scavenger human woman, not sure how she factors in this but we do find out.
Almost an inside out movie where the humans are no longer dominant, we thought.
So I felt a slow burner in the first half, but totally transfixed.
So the story grows and here is another leader, a gang type group enslaving other apes. So Noah is going to be the hero?
I don't want to spoil this but if you are a fan of the previous recent 3 movies you absolutely need to see this in the big screen.
Without giving away the plot - The scavenger woman is actually on a mission, I'll leave it there.
Road House (2024)
Awesome Action Movie
This movie is a spin on the first movie that starred Patric Swayze way back in 1989.
Not the same movie - a Redux of sorts. Patric did many movies, Dirty Dancing was one, Ghost - another. I always thought he did dancing stuff. It was many years later that I watched the 1989 Road House Movie.
So, watching this new version, with Jake Gyllenhaal., it was interesting to see him extremely body-fit to take on this role. Connor McGregor was great to, one of his nemesis'.
So, as a lover of Jason Statham movies, this was right up there - a polite gentleman, has skills obviously, and a wee bit of a love story for the ladies.
So, for an action movie I loved it. I think there will be a second movie based on the ending. Let's see what happens.
10/10 for me.
Hellhound (2024)
Watched and learned
This for me, a strange watch. I remember the main actor, was in a movie with Scott Adkins. 2 good fun movies. Debt Collectors.
So, this movie, a very strange video aspect, it appears that if you look at the screen, about one quarter of the movie if missing on the left side....
But, it is what it is.
So, the story, I get it, maybe some subtitles for the Thai language would be helpful, but an enjoyable movie, action as expected.
So a bit of vengeance in this but not fully explained in the original synopsis.
Moving forward, I thought it was enjoyable, having no idea what the thai language parts meant, but did not spoil the movie at all.
As far as an action movie, all good, enjoy the watch. If you happen to see with full english subs, would be useful.
The Bricklayer (2023)
Absolutely Loved it.
I'm am not a professional movie reviewer.
But I am a fan of action movies.
We in New Zealand don't have guns, americans do, we don't.
So, working through Aaron Eckhart movies, loved the one with the Police Dog, that was a good watch.
So I am suspecting, with this movie, maybe a trilogy?
This is an action packed movies, maybe a bit for the ladies, "lovey dovey" stuff, romance a bit, and then his younger accomplice, a CIA Agent, maybe something will develop.
It doesn't matter.
This movie is along the lines of Jason Statham.
Action to the maximum, feelings and loyalty come in to play.
As a "movie" it is awesome.
We watch action movies, many are boring, this one is not one of those. This is 1:50 minutes of cool.
The movie keeps the viewer wanting to know what is next.
So, I am hoping there will be a sequel, maybe a 3rd movie.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and, am looking forward, hopefully, there will be more.
This is why I rated it 10/10.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Average at Best
I had great expectations, watched with my wife and my daughter. Wife nodded off, daughter started playing on her phone.
It starts off with a very star wars look about it, yes there is a story and you start to understand the characters as it goes along. The enemy at the beginning on arrival are very SS Hitler type management and you can't shake that feeling.
The scenes where there are not human characters are clearly spoofing star wars pub scene type scenario and when the main character comes out of her shell she is a combatant know doubt but very obviously choreographed.
So 2 hours and a bit and I wonder was this a school boy essay in film.
I was expecting more but got less.
The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari (2022)
Heartbreaking Documentary
I am a Kiwi.
This was an aweful event taking place in my homeland in New Zealand.
This is not any hollywood movie, it is real. When this event took place we were all shocked to our nerves.
It all starts with us humans being quite inquisitive, a live volcano, tours taking people there.
The people of Whakatane see this volcano every day, as they said, 48km from them.
They see the steam plumes every day. But it was also a tourist attraction. Not cheap either, to visit.
Sadly, the helicopter pilots who ultimately collected those injured people, saved some lives too, were in court recently for not obeying the no fly zone orders, and have been sued, losing their businesses over this. They saved lives and those that were saved will be forever greatful.
The Island (2023)
Forget the others - This was great
I like action movies.
Not a huge critic - I leave that to them to argue amongst themselves, as they do. They think they can out-do each other.
It's actually a narcissistic trait.
So, the movie, the visuals are beautiful, the island is beautiful also, where this whole saga plays out.
So, I am not going to spoil anything.
It is a great watch, plenty of action and if you like gun movies, this is right up there, same goes for if you like drug runner movies, it's right there.
The story has many deaths, but from a vengeance perspective, a broth needlessly killed, transpires in the movie you are about to watch, and I hope you do.
Asteroid City (2023)
Slow Burner and Awesome
A thoroughly total watchable slow burning movie.
This movie has an all star cast.
I love Tom Hanks movies, and this one was a bit left-field.
However, grab your popcorn and watch.
The movie is set in the desert. Focus on the photopher and Scarlett Johansen. A weird romance of sorts, might happen, might not.
Woodrow, the young lady has taken a shine to him, quite sweet.
An alien steals his/their asteroid back.
Wow, a weird premise but can't look away, it is what it is.
Slight CGI here and there, but no real gun work going on which I appreciated.
The millenials out there may be bored watching but this is including young braniacs from the 50's.
A thoroughly enjoyable watch so I gave it 10/10.
Carnifex (2022)
Fantastic
I saw the reviews, mainly negative. But then scrolled down and saw many others who enjoyed it.
I'm a Kiwi - For the uninitiated, I'm from New Zealand.
So, I'm not going to spoil this for someone who has not watched.
I watched this wonderful Horror flick, produced by my wonderful cousins across the ditch - Australia.
I do not like gore type movies, and this is not one of those.
The scenery and videography was lovely.
So to keep you suspense, it was filmed in a way where you are thinking, "what is going to happen next".
So looking forward, as you do, it was a cool watch.
Ouch, some kind of creature, it is all there. Suspense.
As a viewer, you are led in to a place where you can enjoy the scenery and see the 3 main characters pulling off a great job.
I had a big smile at the end.
Good Boy Goose!
Homestead (2023)
Slow Burner but Excellent
Yep, I've read the reviews. I am not an expert reviewer, just a normal movie watcher here in NZ.
I like westerns and this one was a bit different.
A little "Little House on the Prairie" cottage.
I had no huge expectations. The story develops, having no idea what Pa's previous history was but it develops.
Strong acting from the daughter - she reminded me of my own sister.
The movie cruises along at a reasonable pace.
I think the expectations of previous viewers were way above mine.
I like to watch, absorb, understand the story of the family which is not apparent from the kick off.
The ending was unexpected.
Grab your popcorn, enjoy!
Blood (2022)
Slow Burning Thriller with Vampire Characteristics
I have read other reviews before watching.
I don't like slasher movies, and this is not one.
More Vampire style. You will know the synopsis by now.
The acting is very good by all in the movie.
There is a story in this although unpleasant and I see a similarity with Pet Sematary by Stephen King.
I enjoyed the watch, it pulled you in.
If you like a slow burning thriller, you will enjoy this as I did.
The story is based on a lake, albeit empty and tried up now, with something evil in the tree leading to the dog being aware something was going on the tree in the middle. Whatever is in the tree, we don't find out but the curious dog ends up being rabid and biting the young son Owen. He ends up being rabid too and can only survive by drinking blood, human, animal or otherwise.
Mother is a doctor and has access to blood in the beginning of the boys issue and the story takes you from there.
It's a good watch for 1:40mins.
