New Amsterdam (2008)
Highlander for the new millennium ?
This show is OK, seen the first 4 episodes. It borrows from the Highlander TV series in that the main character is immortal. He is made an immortal as a result of an act of kindness that he committed some 400 years ago and will only be made mortal again when he finds his one true love ? Well the historical flashbacks are OK and the show's a reasonable cop type show however the reason for his immortality is a bit daft and taking 400 years or more to find his true love is a bit stupid and kind of lame.
The idea behind the show is not as cool as highlander and is a bit of a wishy washy version of it. I guess it's better than Highlander the Raven but is in no way as entertaining as the original Duncan MacCloud based Highlander series. It's premise is just too soft and daft. Highlander for girls if you like ? Bring back Highlander this doesn't quite cut it.
BloodRayne (2005)
I liked it, although a lot of reviewers here have missed the point
I liked this film it was fun, which isn't that the point of a movie like this, lokken is gorgeous and the set, props, atmosphere were fine. The plot was OK too. Hell what do you people who hated this expect to see from an action vampire movie ? of course it's all ludicrous, get over it, go watch another type of movie and get a life, don't you know what type of films you like by now or are you all 17 ? and clueless or some such. There's nought wrong with a bit of mindless entertainment after a hard days work.
Granted Underworld, Van Helsing, Bram Stokers and the like are better than this, but it's still worth watching on DVD or TV
Avoid the sequel though, that isn't very good, no Lokken either !
Highlander: The Source (2007)
I liked it, even though it was mad-cap
I have all of the highlander series box sets and have seen every episode before, this film, whilst not of a mega Hollywood budget, obviously had a much bigger budget than that of a couple of TV episodes. Yes Duncan seems a bit glum and miserable throughout, but he had become that way by the end of the TV series, so it makes sense.
Granted this was not a high brow attempt to bring the franchise to a conclusion, but hey it's a movie not an episodic ongoing saga and as a movie it conjured up a good looking dark twisted and evil world with some larger than life characters somewhat akin to 18 rated comic book characters, plus some decent sets and FX.
My god I have seen lots of really bad reviews for this, people take things too seriously, it's basically an action/fantasy/horror movie and as such was fun too watch which I believe is the point to such movies.
So not an intelligent conclusion but what the hell, it was fun and remember the whole idea of Highlander was always insane with inherent floors all over it so come on you die hard 'Trekkie' type people, lighten up and don't take such a rigid approach to mythical fantasy icons. 7 out of 10.
