The Suicide Squad (2021)
Not even Margot Robbie can save this movie
I could not watch this movie in one single sitting, I had to rewatch the first 20 minutes like 3 times, then watched it in chunks for 3 days, because I just could not focus to finish it, but I committed to it until I did. I do not know what is it about it but it is just unwatchable! I am not sure if it is the writing or the special effects but it is just awful. The characters look like a joke someone proposed and the one who agreed did not understand the joke; the story telling is sloppy and doesn't make any sense. It is far worse than the first one and that one was not that good to begin with.
Batman & Robin (1997)
So bad is actually good
It is a funny movie, and you have to see it that way if you want to enjoy it, if not you'll make the mistake of thinking it is an awful movie. It is colorful and quirky, filled with a lot of bad acting from really good actors. I mean it has Uma Thurman, Alicia Silverstone Arnold Schwarzenegger and George Clooney! I really enjoyed this movie as a kid and rewatching it now I find it so entertaining. Yes, it was never going to be a big winning awards type of movie, but I don't think that out of the 4 movies of its time it deserves the worst rating. Mr Freeze and Poison Ivy might be my favorite villains from all the movies. Their stories and purposes are actually relatable.
The Big Bang Theory (2007)
Shouldn't have lasted for as long as it did
At the beginning it was funny, original and enjoyable. As time passed by it got stale and by the last season it was unbearable. If you attempt to binge watch, you will find yourself constantly saying "wow, that's mean". The friendships and romantic relationships are so toxic and dysfunctional that you wonder how would these people function in real life.
The series in general had some social contributions that are important in terms of how the average people developed certain enjoyment for science and comics because of the series, but overall it did more damage than good: it glorified bullying your inner circle. And oh god...that thing they did at the end with Penny!! They had a really good opportunity there for the childfree community...and just ugh...completely ruined it.
Cinderella (2021)
This story got its much needed update
This is a fun and light movie, I loved the new take, as they tried to refresh the very outdates topics of the original story. It is great that the cast is more diverse: I love the fact that Cinderella is hispanic! Also, great choice for the fabulous godmother and the stepmother! I'm obsessed with the fact that the female dynamics are way more healthy that in the original and the story of Ella goes beyond just falling in love with the prince, she has ambition and a purpose. And the role of princess Gwen...I'm in love. The music choice is interesting and they did a good job on the covers. Is an enjoyable movie to relax and unwind.
Barbie (2023)
Laughed and cried so much
It is funny, it is deep, it is nostalgic, it is not about romance, it is all the things the doll was meant to be.
The narrator states at the beginning that the reason the doll was conceived was to give girls a path different from motherhood, but somehow we ended up turning her into this shallow stereotype to crush women's self-esteem.
The movie is entertaining , it makes you laugh, has so many characters, you barely get to appreciate all of them. I don't particularly love gosling as ken, I find him too old for the role, but plays well the part.
Now the important thing about the movie is the concept. The whole idea of patriarchy being the ultimate cause for the existential crisis for both men and women is just beyond brilliant. It is light enough so you don't get an existencial crisis while watching it, but you'll leave the theater with a refreshed notion that we are all suffering due to the same problem.
That scene with the old lady is endearing, the scene where barbie and ken are explaining how they are feeling about being observed on the street is an eye opener, and ohh, that final joke! Bonus points for that ending!
Will definitely what again.
Good Omens (2019)
Both seasons are brilliant in their own way!
Season one is perfectly based on the book, we all know it, it was greatly adapted to the screen, there are no flaws.
Now, season two was where they got creative, it was brilliantly written. To take existing characters and envision a new path for them, with new stories that are intertwined and continue conversations started in season 1! That was great! The whole good/bad conversation is just...wow! And that ending for season two was so heartfelt, so honest, it was really a beautiful ending.
The only thing that I's say is that they could have played with the whole "angels and demons don't have genders" a bit more.
Si lo hubiera sabido (2022)
It was kinda good, then the last episode happened
Of course you have to start on the grounds of fiction, otherwise, don't even attempt to watch.
The general story is entertaining, the characters are funny and the base of the story is likable, maybe even relatable; however there are a lot of plot-holes and there are things that get lost with so many components, it gets kinda convoluted. But that ending... oh sweet jesus... (facepalm) they start mixing everything, very crappy storytelling; that ending makes no sense. It's like they realized half way thought that they only had one episode left and threw everything in a blender and ta-dah! Additionally that ending gives stalker vibes. Like why do that?
Machos Alfa (2022)
Funny, interesting, could go deeper
It is a funny comment on the situations of couples and romantic/sexual dynamics when men think they are "alpha males", but don't even know the origen of the concept.
Its main characters are the men but they are not the ones calling the shots, which is refreshing; still feels like third wave feminism, but good effort on including a guy constantly calling out on sexist behaviors, they chose to make him annoying, but still...at least it was there.
Overall is funny, entertaining and has a lot of subtext; it is not perfect, but opens the door to the discussion of the toxicity of patriarcal society on men and women.
Luckiest Girl Alive (2022)
Powerful ending
In general the story is well told. Some might find it dull, or with too many holes, but I find it beautiful; it had a mission, a message, and it delivered. Mila Kunis does a great job (like always).
You can see how a victim carries with them their pain in everything they do, and is a clear example of how "good guys" are everything but. How it is embedded in society to blame women, see them as crazy, and keep them quiet because is easier for everyone else.
Oh that ending!! That last part is for victims everywhere...Stroked a nerve deep down. Just amazing! I wish I could see more things like this, but you know...
