Them (2021)
Decent!?? This is a 10 or nothing is.
I can't BELIEVE a reviewer said don't trust the 10 star reviews... "it's decent".
This is extraordinary. It is horrifying on so many levels but it is much more than just another television show in the horror genre. I am certain that I will never forget the experience of watching these episodes for the first time.
I am, like so many people today, addicted to my phone. Unless I make an effort, I will almost always be checking my phone while I watch television. This series is so spellbinding I don't have that issue in the slightest. I can't imagine looking away because I don't want to miss one frame or line of dialogue.
I had never even heard of Little Marvin before now but I will absolutely be watching anything he creates in the future.
C'mon C'mon (2021)
Was cringing until the credits rolled
I have a collection of about ~30 A24 blu rays and I keep adding to my collection. Often I will purchase before having ever seen the film, and that was the case with this one.
I love Joaquin Phoenix and the reviews were stellar so I had high hopes... but this film is exhausting and I could not wait for it to be over. I felt like I was babysitting an annoying little boy for two hours.
Even the "genuine" parts that I assume were unscripted interviews with children were pretty boring and trivial. I found nothing deep or compelling in this film at all.
This is coming from a lover of slow-burn films and the art house style of many A24 movies; this one is a stinker. Easily my least favorite A24 film to date.
The Curse (2023)
Underwhelming
I LOVED Nathan for You and The Rehearsal. In addition, A24 has made (and distributed) some of my all-time favorite movies. So when I heard Nathan Fielder was making a show and A24 was involved, my excitement was very high.
I want to like this show so much and I wish I could say it is a good show. It's just... Not that good. I don't know what else to say. It's not unwatchable. But it's mediocre, it's often boring, and it's just not that fun to watch.
I understand that the characters are intentionally unlikable and many shows I enjoy will take this route. But the characters in this show are both awful people AND extremely boring.
I'm on episode 9 and I'm ready to be done. It's feeling like a chore but I got this far so I'll finish it out. If this review isn't amended and ends here just assume episodes 9 & 10 were just as lackluster as the rest of the season.
Edit: Episode 10 was somewhat more interesting than the rest of the season. Can't recommend starting this series from Episode 1 but honestly maybe just watch the last episode it would've made a decent A24 movie on it's own.
The Exorcist: Believer (2023)
Decent 2023 Horror Flick
Saw this in an IMAX theater on opening night. I avoided reading any reviews before viewing. Left feeling satisfied but not blown away. A few people clapped when the credits rolled. When I got home and saw how poor the response has been I was a bit surprised.
I assume some of the negative reviews are from classic horror fans. This is a 2023 modern styled horror movie. It does not have classic horror vibes and is not reminiscent of the original at all.
Reviewing the movie as such, it was a lot better than most of the new horror movies that make it to theater. I thought it was much better than this year's Evil Dead but, for some reason, that movie didn't get slammed nearly as hard as this one did.
Beau Is Afraid (2023)
What did I just watch?
Where to begin with this film... walking out of the theater I was not ready to exclaim, "That was amazing!", nor was I ready to say, "That was awful!"
Truly, the only thought I had while walking out was, "What the hell did I just watch?"
I have been waiting for Ari Aster's next movie to come out ever since I saw Midsommar in theaters, which was almost 4 years ago now. I immediately fell in love with that movie and became obsessed, seeing it several times in the theater and then at least a dozen more times once I had a physical copy on DVD. I also thoroughly enjoyed Hereditary, although it never stood out to me as groundbreaking. To me, it was simply an EXCELLENT horror movie. Nothing new, just done better.
Midsommar was new. I had never seen anything like it. Beau is new. I have never seen anything like it.
That said, part of me feels that movies like Beau are not being made for a good reason. It is very difficult to sit through three hours of a movie not knowing if anything is real. To say this movie is simply "surreal" is an understatement. I have never watched anything that felt so much like being in a dream state. Closest thing I can even think of is maybe an animation by David Firth. It's creepy, it's confusing, but still... it's overwhelmingly compelling.
I have firmly decided I will see this again in theaters, as I expect watching this on a smaller screen at home will not be the same experience. However, it is going to be difficult rewatching this alongside an audience that is, more than likely, unaware of what they signed up for. My first viewing had multiple people laughing out loud at scenes that I don't necessarily think were meant to evoke that reaction. I also overheard numerous members of the audience expressing much disappointment while exiting.
I suppose I will leave it at that. I know I didn't really get into much detail, but I think it's better that way. Go and see it. I do believe that whether you love it or hate it (and you definitely might hate it), it will be an experience worth having and one you've never had before.
The Drop (2022)
Here To Offset the Hate
I have been regularly using IMDb for nearly 2 decades and have never posted a review or even rated a film. I felt compelled to write this review because it currently has a rating of 4.3 and somebody needs to vouch for this movie being an enjoyable experience.
I found this movie highly entertaining. It had me laughing out loud several times. It is a bit offbeat and definitely a fair amount of "cringe comedy". A lot of people just don't like this type of movie and I understand that. It's different. It's a good combination of dark humor and current traditional comedy.
Almost all the characters have unflattering qualities at times but I couldn't help but love every one of them. Credit to the writers for hilarious lines and situations and to all the actors for adding something uniquely humorous to their role.
If have you enjoyed dark comedy movies such as Young Adult, World's Greatest Dad, or Big Fan; I would give this one a shot.
I knew as soon as that baby hit the concrete this movie would not be for everyone, but it DEFINITELY deserves a higher rating than it currently has.
