I Am Legend (2007)

I Am Legend = Serenity's Reavers on Earth
17 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I purposely steered clear of any articles and adverts of this film in the hope that my viewed won't be tarnished so naturally I was eager to watch the movie.

The mystery behind the desolation of one of the world's busiest cities was intriguing until the story started to unfold.

Half way through the film, I stopped and thought, "it's the PAX".

For those who haven't seen Joss Whedon's "Serenity" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/), what I'm saying won't mean a thing but in the series "Firefly" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303461/), we're introduced to Reavers or men gone wild on the edge of space and the story unfolds in the film, "Serenity". You'll have to watch "Serenity" to understand what I'm saying because any more would be a give away.

"I Am Legend" is good entertainment with excellent graphics and keeps people guessing for 50% of the film which is why I gave it a 4 out of 10 but for film-a-holics who put one and one together and uncover concepts effectively plagiarised from other films that perhaps haven't done as well, then this type of film ends up as a total disappointment.

Babylon 5 was "the" best sci-fi program of the 1990's but...

Warning: Spoilers
...I felt that each of the two plots required a feature length film to fully explain the stories. In fact, if these were full length episodes, each story would have been 45 minutes whereas in this case we had two stories crammed into less than 1 hour 10 minutes.

I gave the score of 6 out of 10 only because the length which, in my humble opinion, was too short. Other then that, the religious connotation of the first part was actually quite novel and the second part regarding the Centauri prince was interesting too.

I did notice that the quality of the CGI was much improved to that of the 1990's B5 but it would have been good to see some more shots of space.

After 20 years, it's still watchable!

I was in my mid teens when this film first came out and I watched it for the first time a couple of years later when it was released on VHS. 20 years after its release, I still watch it because this is one of those rare films where the cast selection is superb and the acting is 10/10. Although the soundtrack is very 1980's, some of the music is timeless (for those who are interested, Mica Paris' version of "Words into Action" is just as good as Jermaine Jackson's original).

In my humble opinion, Rob Lowe (Danny) and Demi Moore (Debbie) have by far the best on-screen chemistry that I've seen. Their portrayal during the emotional scenes are amazing and so realistic that they leave a "lump in my throat" every time. James Belushi deserves so much credit as the comic sidekick as does Joan (Elizabeth Perkins), Debbie's cynical friend.

One thing though; I've always wanted to know what happened to their characters twenty years on. So, to Edward Zwick (Glory, Blood Diamond etc.): Do you fancy making a sequel; "About Last Decade"? Seriously, About Last Night is by far the vest romantic comedy from the past two decades and for that I give the film 10/10.
