13 Reasons Why (2017)
Interesting show but....
I'm not sure where to start with this show. Overall, the acting and story line weren't bad at all. However, if they were intending us to focus on the 'bullying' or the suicide of Hannah they failed miserably. I get a lot of stupid stuff happened to Hannah. However, you can't help to feel that she wrote her own demise. She had some good friends, who treated her nicely, (like Clay), parents that cared deeply about her (refusing to take her college money) as well as other people that sincerely appreciated her (the poet from the library). However, she is a major drama queen. As much as I tried to like this girl, she became unlike-able. Maybe that was the intent. She pushes and pushes people away, and is disappointed when they finally give up on her and don't bother chasing her anymore. This is especially true of Mr. Garrison. What was she expecting from him?
This series hit close to home, having lived with someone that was a victim at every stage of their life. It's sad to watch this sort of thing. Hannah didn't appreciate all her parents had done for her. She didn't appreciate the friends that she made, nor the effort people put into her. 13 Reason Why could have been also been named "All About Me!". Bryce, of course, was an ass. In fact, most of the kids at her school were ass's, but what Bryce did, horrible. However, Bryce happened long after all the other things. Hannah didn't deserve what that creep did to her, but she never helped out when Bryce did the same thing to another girl, nor did she speak out much regarding what happened to her.
Overall a sad story. It sucks that some the kids had to hear the tapes, but that's the way it went. But you can't help but to think that Hannah was just a self-absorbed spoiled child that was incredibly selfish, really not giving a genuine care about anyone, other than the movie theatre. (since she returned the clothing) I lived with someone like that, luckily they failed at suicide, but it's a sad thing to watch when someone only cares about getting their needs the way they want them after pushing those needs aside and expecting them to be there regardless of the pushing away.
In the end, you'll likely feel most sorry for is Justin. And of course, Jessica is just one messed up girl.
For the actors that did this show, though, great acting. Well put together, just not sure of what mark they were trying to hit.
Infection (2005)
Not sure where to begin...(not sure if this contains spoilers either)
I give this movie a 4, if only because there was one spot that made me jump out of my jammies, and that usually gives any movie I rate 3 stars or so. They get another star for doing this movie in one continual shot, unlike other 'cam' movies. Not sure what to say about the acting. Amazing though that at no point did they break out into uncontrollable laughter. In a way, this looks like it could have been a high school or college project. There are some inconsistencies that didn't make a lot of sense, for example, cell phones not working (c'mon Verizon!) yet two-way voice/video between police vehicle and police station functioning, to some extent anyway. And, I do have to ask, but why do people always get 'invaded' or 'infested' through the ear? I think Star Trek did that, one time is enough. Not sure what to make of the 'ghosting' parts. That part is never explained. (actually, nothing is explained) Also, does rural California look like that? It looks like something you'd see in the Great Lakes area, it reminded me of the sorta crappy roads you get in Ontario when you're by Lake Huron. Word has it that if you watch the 15 minutes of credits (really, 15 minutes!) you get no additional information. Anyway, the only recommendation I can make to the producers of this movie, if they're reading this review, when doing a dash-cam movie, mount the cam a little higher. I really don't need to see the hood of the police vehicle for an hour. Also, what cop wears jeans while on duty? They do sell blue or black work pants at Wal-Mart. I'm not a movie producer, so I won't critique anything else. But, just saying, the girl gets a real nice prom dress..surely $30 pants from Wal-Mart or Marks Work Warehouse wouldn't have broken the bank.
Europa Report (2013)
Very good movie.
I'm not going to get in to what the movie is all about. However, I have found it very hard to find decent movies to watch recently, most of which are re-hash of movies past. But I'm giving this a movie a quick review because I think anyone who like sci-fi or thrillers, drama's or "light" horror movies will like this movie. It's a reminder that there are some very good movies out there that are not "Hollywood". I liked the movie concept, I loved the acting, the special effects were excellent and believable and story was solid. The movie from beginning to end was great and keeps you engaged. Solid ending. This movie, btw, would have been great on the silver screen, but I don't think it made it over to North America. Shame.
District 9 (2009)
Excellent Movie
I will save everyone some time here and just say that this movie was excellent - maybe even a little beyond. They did an excellent job of putting the movie together in a very unique way. For sure not your typical science fiction. As other have mentioned, the setting (where the movie takes place) also adds to the interest of this movie. There are some mild attempts of humour with this movie and that was well done too. The special effects were also top notch. The thing I liked the most about this movie is that it seemed as if it really could have happened. (you'll understand when you watch the movie) Another angle the director hits on was the relationships, not only between the officials, but also some of the locals and within the alien community itself. It's something you don't usually see in these types of movies, and when you do, it's usually done in a tacky sort of way. If you were planning on seeing a movie tonight - get out your popcorn or chips or whatever you want, and enjoy what probably was one of the better movies of the decade!
