Amistad (1997)
Good begining, but too much talkative then
How long, how talkative! It was off to a good start, however, this film: it was rather captivating, offered striking sequences, announced a hard and poignant story. But the concentration on trials, particularly static, has taken over. Side effects, sterile debates against a background of light music by John Williams to try to occupy our hearing, nice words by clichéd characters full of good feelings, to end up with a happy ending which, historically, does not so is no secret. Finally, despite some very scattered sequences and a nice decoration, it's a barely correct film, likely to disappoint because of its long lengths. He keeps the merit of presenting us with an anecdote from History which may suggest that we deepen the subject on Wikipedia.
Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (2019)
Beautiful !
A beautiful work, very sensory. We have it for our eyes, for our ears, for various sensations that approach the mystical experience of a trip to the past. By its light, I recognized there without being mistaken Kubrick and his Barry Lyndon, source of inspiration for the director. It's a simple film, but not at all simplistic. He attaches himself to the relationships between his few characters to whom we quickly become attached and makes us captivated in many respects like ugly gossips. We will note the beautiful services and the care given to light. This film, although it is not necessarily suitable for all audiences, contemplative and captivating, is a must-see.
Little Women (2019)
silly and embarrassing
Unstoppable as far as I'm concerned. This film is boring, with an extraordinary linearity, and featuring with all the possible clichés the good feelings and the nice little silly relationships of sisters whose bickering is the type to end with a smile, a wink and a big ridiculous hug that makes my hair stand on end in embarrassment. All sprinkled with permanent music without inspiration from Alexandre Desplat, reminiscent of the snowy TV movies of Sunday afternoons during the Christmas holidays (you know, clarinet, tambourine with little cymbals and little bells...). All that's missing is an audience like in sitcoms to make little "ooooooooooooooh" by tilting his head with a teardrop. I add one point at the minimum possible for the reconstitution and the costumes. It was worth the visual appeal for 10 minutes.
Onoda (2021)
What a good surprise !
Although a little bit long, this is about offering us to share a rather unique and captivating life experience, that of brainwashed Japanese soldiers who only stopped the war 30 years after the capitulation. I appreciated the warm and moist beauty of the jungle and the tropical forest, the change of scenery provided, the sober image which seems authentic and of the period, the "film" aspect and documentary grain. Documentary also as long as there is no lady state. Innocent people go there. The story that is told to us is quite simply captivating and I would not have believed that this anecdote from History, which could be summed up in a few lines, could fit into such a great film. With hindsight, however, I can understand that it does not please some who would fall into boredom; with this film it's a bit all or nothing, you have to succeed in immersing yourself. It is a French film, and as such it must be emphasized that it is a nugget.
Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Why not...
It's hard to know where to position yourself on this film. Mixed review. My conclusion once finished is: "OK". It looks like a film that doesn't really know what it wants or doesn't dare go to the end of things: deviate from the western to surprise us with something disgusting, but ultimately not too much either; which results in a sequence so abused that it made me laugh. It must be said that the reactions and emotions of the characters faced with their tragic destiny do not scare them or sadden them more than that. In addition, visually, too little blood compared to the exposed mutilations (everything is very dry, clotted blood, nothing erupts while people are being slaughtered or (cut) up like pigs), there is has something rather unrealistic that does not pass. Add to this ridiculously accentuated boiling sound effects, and a kind of shift towards the absurd through behaviors that are not always very coherent on the part of the characters, and it's a flop. On the other hand, I appreciated the total disrespect of the codes of suspenseful success. The heroes are picked up and abused relentlessly, managing to leave us disillusioned when we understand or think we understand that there is no more hope, which did not fail to remind me of the trying Funny Games by Haneke. But here, nothing really trying, it's still popcorn cinema.
Ryû to sobakasu no hime (2021)
Not extraordinary
(sorry for my english, i'm french)
A new Japanese animated film in line with those that deal with relationship stories between adolescents. Here, we are treated to a rather subtle story concerning the impact of virtual reality on real life through a game of search and unveiling of identity. Despite everything, and although I appreciated the quality of the sound and the images, I found it difficult to immerse myself with implication in this work which seemed to me to be a mixture of The Beauty and the Beast, Ready Player One, and Frozen. For me, it does not stand out among the best of its kind. A must see for fans of the genre only.
Adieu les cons (2020)
Drama or comedy? Ultimately neither.
(sorry for my english, I'm French)
Ultimately disappointed. I managed to get tired of this already very short film. Unfortunately, I smiled two or three times, and apart from that, nothing. The story is silly, which is not a bad thing in itself when you know that Dupontel tends to look for false serious contexts in these films and decorates them with well-dosed humor. Here, it doesn't seem to know where to place the slider between drama and comedy, and ultimately succeeds in neither. The end which is intended to be tearful is ridiculously melodramatic, the suspicions of gags with the blind man are sometimes embarrassingly ridiculous. I was bored, I didn't laugh, I didn't cry, I wasted my time. Drama or comedy? Ultimately neither.
