Bottoms (2023)
4/10
Loophole to another questionable 2000 teen movie
5 January 2024
I thought we were over goofy hormone driven teen movies like American Pie or Party Animals, since they would be considered problematic in this day and age. But think again: here comes Bottoms where the roles are reversed, so its lesbian girls who do questionable things this time, like starting a self-defense class in hope of getting physical with their heterosexual girl-crushes. Just imagine the same plot with teenage boys trying to find some way to get closer to hot lesbian girls and hoping that they might score with them.

Beside this major issue, the comedy falls mostly flat and not a single character is well written. Everything and everyone is over the top. The whole movie is miles away from any form of realism. It feels like a 90min long adhd instagram reel. And the finale is just the peak of this nonsense.

I had high hopes for this move, but just like Saltburn its more internet hype than actual quality.

High Fidelity (2000)
10/10
Ferris Bueller's big breakup
18 May 2023
Relax, i know the difference between Matthew Broderick and John Cusack. Although both, Ferris Bueller and the protagonist of High Fidelity, Rob Gordon, have the ability to break "the forth wall" and talk to the audience through the camera, i must say, that this gimmick is much more interesting and relevant for the story of High Fidelity. I knew nothing about the movie before watching it and i have to admit: the first time John Cusack looked "at me", i rolled my eyes a little and said to myself: not another one of these meta/self aware movies that are recently all over the place.

But for this movie, the gimmick is simply necessary. It's about breakups and the stupid thoughts of a male brain when it comes to Love, Relationships and Sex. That's why the audience has to hear John Cusack's thoughts and experience the chaos that storms in that mans brain. And i'll have to say: as a 28 year old male some of the things he thinks of really hit home. I had romances and experiences where the ideas of a romance or of a specific girl were often times bigger and more meaningful than they actually were. Everytime we see Rob showing glimpses of happiness, he immidiately loses interest again. He's restless, never satisfied, always on the search of "something better" that doesn't really exist, until he's finally tired of chasing these fantasies.

First i thought of giving this movie a 8-9/10. But why? Just because it's a comedy/romance. Simply for that. But i really can't see any flaws and i'm glad that i watched it.

So there you have it: 10/10.

Babylon (I) (2022)
7/10
without the first half it would be a 5/10
1 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After the first half i seriously thought that Babylon was one of the best movies i recently watched . But after the main character becomes a filmmaker himself, the movie slowly loses everything it had.

This was the moment when the movie kinda changes its genre and switches from comedy to drama. I can't exactly put my finger on the problem.

It could be that the first half of the movie focuses too much on world building (the Hollywood of the twenties and the craziness of it all) and forgets to properly develop the characters so that the drama of the second half feels dull.

I loved the performances of Margot Robbie and Diego Calva but i wasn't really emotionally invested in their story. The Story of Jack Conrad on the other hand got me a little more: a hasbeen Superstar that couldn't bear the fact that no one cares about him anymore.

Yes, Damien Chazelle pays a tribute to the golden days of cinema and yes, he celebrates the milestones cinema have surpassed. But for my taste his work could be a little more subtle and less bloated. It's a weak 7 for me.

Atlanta: Tarrare (2022)
Season 3, Episode 10
3/10
They lost the thing they had in the first two seasons
25 September 2022
The fantastic finale of season two got our expectations high for this season, but now the main storyline is going nowhere and this episode represents the whole season perfectly. Van is being weird for no reason whatsoever and nothing makes any sense. So her teary breakdown at the end makes you feel no emotions at all. Even a cheap "It was all a dream" kind of solution to this episode would be better than the one we got.

A bad filler episode would be fine but now that the main storyline loses its meaning, its kinda difficult to be excited for season four. Maybe they should've ended at season two.

Hulk (2003)
7/10
I'm sorry MCU Fans: this Hulk Movie takes itself seriously
16 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The 2003 Hulk Movie is still the best. It's deep and the soundtrack is unbelievebly good and personally i think the CGI still holds up.

If you are a young Gen-Z Marvel Fan who likes to watch TikTok Clips all day and has the attention span of a Goldfish maybe this movie isn't for you. Unfortunately for you this Movie adresses real and plausible conflicts and has boring adult stuff in it, which takes some precious screen time. The Hulk also doesn't twerk or uses the phrase "bruh" in this movie. Unfortunately he can't even say funny one-liners, because he's too busy watching his mom getting murdered.

Atlanta: Trini 2 De Bone (2022)
Season 3, Episode 7
7/10
an entertaining "ok"
24 August 2022
I know "Atlanta" often depicts white people cliches in a cynical and exaggerated way but i kind of rolled my eyes during a few moments in this episode. The dad who cant handle spicey food and him being scared in a black neighbourhood for example. I liked the tension and the mystery aspects more than the political commentary. Although in the end it once again tried to be deeper than it actually was. What was the Cat A***hole Picture that someone airdropped to the dads phone suppose to mean? I bet some gambino fans already have artsy explanations for it. As soon as i realized that this was an filler episode, i dropped my expectations. Maybe thats why i liked this one more than the last.

Why did you have to break the fourth wall?
18 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't mind movies with evil killers that have no real motive to be sadistic. But if you want to make the viewers sick to their stomach, you have to ground your film in more realism. As soon as one of the killers startet talking to the camera i began to lose interest. And the scene with the remote - maybe scenes like that were new in the 90s or matched the mtv-vibes of the decade. But watching it now, it felt off and didn't age well.

Anyway, the graphic and shocking scenes prior to the remote moment were great and after all, i didn't regret watching this movie.
