Play for Today: A Passage to England (1975)
I have seen this before!
This is one of the better 'Play for Today' episodes. There were 307 of them from 1970 to 1984. 'A Passage to England' 1975 has a very familiar theme to an episode of 'Only Fools and Horses' called 'Cash and Curry' 1981. You may but wonder if John Sullivan found inspiration from watching. Renu Setna stars in both.
At 1 hour and 28 minutes long, this film manages to hold your attention throughout. Colin Welland produces his usual robust and down to earth approach to everything he does. You can see the ending coming from quite a way off, but you are still left guessing. It is well worth a watch just to see how life looked in the seventies.
Zodiac: The Horns of the Moon (1974)
It looks like nothing ever changes...
Michele Dotrice plays the part of Glynis Johns in the film 'The Card' (1952). Anton Rodgers plays the naive Alec Guinness well. British television in the early 70s was often quite formulaic, but you will never see classics like this made again.
The First Men in the Moon (2010)
Lacklustre
This is a forgettable experience with too much emphasis on emotion, not enough science and bad special effects. Mark Gatiss is playing the part of Mickey in the 'League of Gentlemen' and Iris Krell. Rory Kinnear is never going to match his father in acting ability. The poor special effects remind you of a bad episode from Doctor Who.
The Comic Strip Presents...: Funseekers (1988)
I have seen this before!
If you have seen 'Kevin & Perry Go Large' (2000), then you will know what this episode of 'The Comic Strip' is all about. Kathy Burke makes an appearance in both, along with the same visual gags and so called comical situations.
There Was a Crooked Man (1960)
I have seen this before!
Norman Wisdom takes on the role of George Formby in a 'He Snoops to Conquer' (1944) and 'I'm All Right Jack' (1959) update. It looks like nothing ever changes.
The Frighteners: The Disappearing Man (1972)
I have seen this before!
From the episodes I have watched so far, this was the most entertaining. There does seem to be a certain amount of plagiarism with the very popular 'The Sixth Sense' in 1999. I wonder if Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan watched it.
