Ai no korîda (1976)
Profane and Beautiful
There are few films that have the ability to show such graphic sexual scenes and be nothing about sex. This film is not pornographic. It's profane. It's a film about how our desires can withdraw us from society, reality, or even out own consciousness. We become so obsessed with life, material things, people, and our obsessions can kill us. We become voyeurs when watching this film. The director constantly challenges us to look and to see how the two main characters see each other. The film is a commentary on Japanese society, as we see a woman dominate a man sexually. He withdraws from his position in society and from the military dictatorship that runs Japan. It's truly a beautiful film that succeeds in arousing our mind and our body, and then it challenges us to look deeper into our own place in society, how we withdraw from it, how we escape, and what our escape says about how we view society.
Tupac: Resurrection (2003)
Tupac lives
"Tupac :Resurrection" gave me a little more insight into the mind of a gifted and at times troubled artist. However, the film felt less like a documentary and more like a compilation of most of the material that I had already seen on MTV and VH1. The problem is that the director fails to create a theme. The overuse of aerial "pretty" shots of sand dunes, Las Vegas and the clouds become less reflective and in short repetitive. Overall, as a Tupac fan I enjoyed listening to him and seeing his life given the attention it deserves.
The Rundown (2003)
True Entertainment
The Rundown, was hillarious and truly entertaining. It's storyline is predictable, but the deliverly of it is amusing and action packed. You cannot expect an oscar worthly performance or script from this film. Why should you? People forget to judge entertaining films as just that. Does this film entertain? Yes. Is the chemistry between The Rock and Sean Patrick etc good? Yes. Overall I really enjoyed this film. It did not change my outlook life but it did improve my mood that night. And as far as I can see The Rock has stepped in to replace my other favorite action hero, Arnold.
The Kiss (2003)
And this was made because
This film does not make you want to kiss anything but the money that you hopefully won't spend on it. And if you do watch it it is a long hard kiss goodbye to your ten dollar bill. After reading a little description about this film on the website for the Boston Film Festival, a friend and I decided to see it. I regret that decision daily. This film was just so stupid. It was an after school special gone bad. NO, a soap opera made into a script. No, even worse a serious idea that was actually taken serious enough by someone with money that it was made. The characters was cliche and predictable. Eliza, played the sexual bartender roommate to the quiet, hopeless romantic book editor. The plot was ridiculous because the story that they were searching for an ending for was NOT EVEN INTERESTING. Just a little aside, I have always thought that Billy Zane was a little weird, maybe it is from my jaded view of him in "Titanic" or those random Marilyn Manson video (not that I have anything against Marilyn Manson) but seeing him in this horrible film, as a hopeless romantic keeps my opinion of him jaded.
The Rules of Attraction (2002)
Sick of it
After seeing this movie I was very surprised that some many of my fellow film majors at my New England area University actually loved this film. I am sick of seeing movies about rich, white, drug abusing kids at liberal arts colleges and their freaking issues. Oh you may argue that James Van der Beek ( or however you spell his name) was not rich and his selling drugs was due to his need to fit in. OH PLEASE!!! A drug dealer is a drug dealer; whether he is in the ghetto or the rolling hills of a college campus. All the actors were merely just playing themselves. The style of the film was interesting but just like the film "Go" it was just "too cool" that it sucked.
