Once Upon a Time: Leaving Storybrooke (2018)
My childhood is over now
I grew up with Once Upon a Time. It was a show that held so much nostalgia for me. When it was airing season 7, I watched about 6 episodes then stopped. I don't quite remember why, but most likely because I wasn't a fan of the new story lines.
About two months ago, I decided to rewatch the show in its entirety. Once I got to season 7, I still felt as though the new plot wasn't as good. I didn't care for the characters as much, but I wanted to stick through it and finish the show. I'm so glad I did.
I was was genuinely concerned as to whether or not everything would end well and keep a good pace in 43 minutes. However, this ending was everything I could have ever hoped for.
All of the best parts of this episode came back to Rumple and Regina. It was bittersweet seeing Rumple join Belle in death. He died a hero (which I never expected really) and Regina's monologue at his death weighed heavily on me.
Regina as a character has been through so much, it really made me sad that she had to go through one more loss before getting her happily ever after. I couldn't have written a better way for it to go though.
When Regina was crowned The Good Queen, I broke down crying. She finally redeemed herself in the eyes of her people, and her speech at the end made me realize that my childhood was officially over. (It has definitely been over for many years now though) I cried for all of the beloved characters, and this was a perfect goodbye to Once Upon a Time. A beautiful show that I will never be able to thank enough for nurturing my childhood fantasies.
Stranger Things: Chapter Nine: The Piggyback (2022)
It's the same as every other season
Every single season the main characters split off into groups and never communicate with one another. It feels like the main characters never learn and nor do the writers. Most frustrating of all is the fact that they said sike and almost killed off a main character, but didn't. This show will never be great if they keep doing that over and over again. It just feels like they're so scared to do such a thing, and last minute they change their minds. As soon as Max was marked earlier on in the season, I knew she would be fine. They always figure out a way to save someone in the group, but never anyone that was introduced in the same season. I actually believed they would follow through when Max had her deathbed monologue, and I was excited! It was a well done death scene, and she had a monologue earlier in the episode that really made it feel right for this to be her time to die. But all of a sudden... Eleven has powers... to bring people back to life??? Please explain how this makes any sense at all. It's horrendous. They had the audacity to say at the end of this episode that Max "May never wake up" when we all damn well know she will. Because she is a main character. It's infuriating.
Some other annoying notes for this episode:
Steve, Nancy, and Robin were being choked for 30 minutes without even a cut to see if they were still alive (they shouldn't have been). You're telling me they survived being choked for 5 monologues between other characters? It makes no sense. If they wanted them to be in that specific situation of peril, they should have done it later so it made sense time-wise.
This season, Will and Lucas were almost completely forgotten too. Before the second volume of this season, I could swear that Yuri had more speaking lines than Will. They just completely isolated him and game him no love this season. To top it all off, he had one of the most sad moments this season. It broke my heart to see him break down these last two episodes. However, I really appreciated that Jonathan noticed and let him know he was there. That was very heartwarming.
As far as Lucas, I just felt bad for him all season. It felt like as soon as he developed his own interests, the group just didn't bother to connect with him anymore. He was excluded from a lot this season, but he still wanted to help when he saw that they were in trouble. Lucas holding Max while she was dying was very sad as well. You could just tell all he wanted was to be with her and help her in any way she needed (even if it's not what she wanted).
Other than these complaints, it wasn't a terrible episode. Episode 7 was much much better. My problems with it were big enough to spoil it for me at the end though. In my opinion, this show isn't worth the 2-3 year wait between seasons if they are going to keep pulling the same plot shenanigans. Just disappointing as a season because it had some good moments and so much potential.
