There Was a Little Girl (1981)
Melodrama meets Horror
Bizarre in feel & tone from the start, "Madhouse" is an utterly strange film rich in melodrama & the kind of overwrought acting from its female stars that went out of style in the late 1960s. The movie would've been a perfect vehicle for the likes
of Better Davis or Joan Crawford or both as the two gave us the memorable psycho sisters of "Wh hatever happened to Baby Jane?" alas the comparison ends there with me not quite sure what this was all about. Though I won't give away any spoilers I will say the purpose for all the vengeful mayhem is never explained. A vicious killer dog is employed throughout but...why? The 3 stars are for occasionally suspenseful moments & a mansion that's the actual star of the movie. So much could've been done with it as well as the films premise. 90 or so minutes of your life that you'll never get back.
Kill Game (2016)
Better Than You Think
Remember how you felt when you saw "April Fool's Day" & "Happy Death Day" & " Urban Legend"& all those other oddball killer on the loose films that never quite scared you like "Halloween" or "The Exorcist" but wasn't as hip & pop-culturey as the "Scream" flicks? That's the vibe I got from "Kill Game". All the usual suspects are here but the story is actually so well told the movie begs you to stick with it to the very end which provides multiple gotcha moments in the last 10 minutes alone. If the bizarrely masked old lady is what drew you to the flick you won't be disappointed. This Killer eats up the screen in every scene it appears. A truly menacing dark figure that could easily be Michael Meyers' aunt. With just enough blood & gore to not feel absurd it's well worth the watch & should be mandatory Halloween viewing. I'd love to see the killer sprung off into a sequel much darker a la "Terrifier". It's a definite YES for me.
