Machan (2008)
Machan: sad truth on emigration, told you with humor and making you smile.
I noticed almost all the comments on the movie come from Sri Lanka. I can understand how much this movie has been loved in his own country. Cause the story, the interpreters, everything involved in the movie belongs to Sri Lanka. But after the movie is over, editing and post production done, especially after you watch it and the lights turn on, this "Machan" belongs to the world, to everyone: it's a true story, and it's the truth about sad and unfair differences in the world, about the cruelty and necessity of a lot of people (men, women, husbands, wives, sons and daughters, father and mothers) to emigrate to survive and to help their families, about the cruelty and stupidity of a lot of European laws about immigration, about the surviving instinct all the men have, about life's meaning, in general, if we can all admit life is "the" right for everybody, and not only life\survive, but life\pursuit for happiness (just to use another Italian director\world citizen's -G. Muccino- words). And the movie reaches this big and high target using humor and levity. The hardest way. I want to thank personally Pasolini for the richness watching this movie gave me. To finish it costed only 2 euros millions. Imagine... and compare with all the expensive garbage we're forced to watch from the industry...just to make them richer, and produce more expensive garbage. I really hope this movie will be loved. It deserves it.

Gotcha!!
Kim Ki Duk knows how to catch you. At the beginning, when you watch this movie (as when you watch other Kim's movies), you need some time...hold your thoughts, don't express your opinion yet, just wait. After a few minutes, you'll find yourself in another world, watching single details in the images, discovering colors, following characters you already love, and feel related to. "Breath" doesn't make any exception: the wife and the condemned become your friends, or relatives, and you feel their emotions, you are happy, and then sad, and then again happy, and in the end really sad. And you do it with these characters. Be careful, you'll bring them home after the show, and this movie (and its feelings), they wont leave you, for hours.

Ironic Blood Feast
Straight from the Manga, Mike's masterpiece explores connections between sadism and humour, violence and sex. Characters are unidimensional like the best comics tradition. Cinematography is stylish, classy and innovative, and all the actors are perfectly casted. Blood and torture scenes are extremely graphic. The end, as usual in Mike's movies, is a bit confusing and mysterious, and in this case, in my opinion, it damages the climax too much. But the surprise about Tsukamoto's role right before the end amuses the audience unexpectedly. If you have a strong stomach, you'll find it incredibly entertaining, and even funny in a really original way. If you haven't a strong stomach, avoid it.
The Holiday (2006)
Standard American stuff
If you liked recent movies like "Love actually" or "The family stone", you will probably find "The holiday" entertaining. For me, i was expecting much more (especially from the big cast, and names such as Jack Black, Edward Burns - not more than a cameo -, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz). Unfortunately it's the same old Christmas story of sad breakups (with the cheater boyfriend or the bad guy, always loved but never correct), and new loves found where less you expect it. All mixed up with clichè and traditional locations (the snow in the country and the little cottage, Britain, or the sunny palm drives and the big luxury villas, California). Everything is very professional, but smells of industry too much. Too bad, cause some lines, and the character of the old Hollywood glory, work perfectly.
