It's a Sin (2021)
Can't stop thinking about this show
What a powerful show! As someone who is somewhat knowledgeable about queer history, I have always known about the 80s and how HIV/AIDS devastated gay male communities. To see it close up though - really reminded me of how close this time period really was. I feel quite lucky to have hit my own gay coming of age in the 2010s. I feel grateful for the HIV/AIDS activists back in the day who fought hard against this stigma.
Their stories were so sad, they had their whole lives ahead of them and it was just ripped from them so cruelly... Particularly Colin, who reminded me so much of Nick from Heartstopper from a different time period (who deserves everything)... Anyway, Russell T Davies is a genius.
The Bitch Who Stole Christmas (2021)
bad acting/story, but make it camp
As a diehard drag race fan, i had to check this out. And due to all the drag race cameos (latrice royale, raven, brooke lynn, mayhem, etc), it's a worthwhile watch just for that alone.
But a lot of this film doesn't hold up. In fact the plot is pretty terrible and in a film all about queerness and queer people, the main plotline centres around two straight people falling in love. Hmmm...
if you like campy flicks (think jinkx and dela's christmas special, but worse), you might like this. Is it a must watch? No. But should you stream it anyway to support the queens? I say it's worth it.
Heartstopper (2022)
this is the kind of representation i needed when i was younger
I rarely leave reviews but felt like i had to just for this series. It is so heart achingly good. As a 90s baby who went through a completely different high school experience, seeing these gen Zers live their best lives honestly puts a smile on my face, but also part of me aches to have had this kind of experience growing up.
Nick and charlie are so adorable, full stop. I love that they actually got teenagers to play these roles and not full on adult men (cough riverdale). The friend group is everything and i love that all the adults in the show are supportive and not toxic. It's just a really sweet, wholesome, happy series that's sure to put a smile on your face. :) eagerly awaiting a season 2!
The soundtrack is amazing too.
