It's got it all
18 September 2004
This movie has it all - adventure, crime, romance, friendship, humor. It's surprising - you newer know what's going to happen next, you're kept in suspense. It's personal and heartfelt without being tepid and pink.

The characters are very realistic and they make very fine, well balanced portraits. And it's a movie that can make you think a lot, if you want to - you can also choose just to hop on board and follow the flow of this journey.

Great ending! - I admit, I'm a weak sucker for an ending like that! :) This is a tenner! 10/10

Silently moving
7 June 2004
I was moved by this one, and I'm a rock. Even though I did not like one of the morals of the story - that if you get a child, you can overcome alcoholism and lead a better life. Unfortunately that's a romantic dream challenged by many an alcoholic as an escape route, and I've seen many try and fail with the children caught up in the mess as victims.

But it's beautifully acted. The story is a tragic one, but it's told in a wonderful "laughter-through-tears" way.

Very nice framing too, and silent and emotional shots - not boring at all. Deeply moving. Thanks for this one.

Conventional boredom
15 March 2004
Some kind of weird attempt to create an art movie. But some good filming angles and painfully slow scenes just doesn't do it.

I normally like very slow movies, but this one really drags, 'cause it's so freakin' boring.

We never get to know any of the characters. Not even the killers. The portrait of the killers is in fact really toe-crumbling, simple and full of "right out of the bag" prejudice.

Several times we get a 5 minute shot of the sky turning a little darker,, cliche symbolism not adding to build excitement.

Nice shooting action though in the final part of the movie - very real. But most of this movie really drags on so slow that it's a pain to sit through.

Poor
11 January 2004
Tess is a mute and vague character, we never get to know her, and that bored me to dust. She looks like a 21st century silicone-lips beauty queen just out of a make-up commercial. And she's supposed to be the daughter of a poor family and with an alcoholic father. She's not that kind at all.

Her clothes is too expensive and neat for a working girl, and her accent is wrong just to mention a few annoying details.

The film is extremely slow and extremely predictable. Nothing stirs the viewer's emotions one bit. There is not a laughter or a cry.

Just silly costumes and fake and non-beliable characters and actions.

Boring
13 November 2003
This is a standard action flick as we have seen them many times before. Not much action in this one though. Again it's about the guy protecting the president. He's macho - as usual, and at the same time soft and melancholic - as usual. Does he have the guts to take a bullet for the president?! And then there's the girl and the usual conservative flirting around. Stereotypical and predictable to the last toe-crumbling minute.

There is a solution
7 April 2003
This movie carries a great message, and I was deeply touched by the story of the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's an important historic treasure being preserved in a true and respectful film. The story is straightforward and strong and gives and honest impression of the pioneers of AA. Let this movie carry the message too.. There is a solution.. ;-)

If you liked this one - watch "Pay it forward" - a wonderful movie with a similar theme.

Emperor's New Clothes
6 April 2003
I watched this movie because of the high ratings. It's way too overrated! There's nothing in this story that has not been used in any low-budget romantic Hollywood-comedy before, and it's done in a toe-crumbling manner (with a soft lense and with long distance shots (or hidden behind curtain shots) when having sex. It's hard to believe why Gabriela falls in love with this guy so quickly and with not much really said and done to make it happen. The dialogue is very conventional, and the music makes no impact. The description of the mental institution, the behaviour of the patients and the treatment they recieve is very unreal and a disgrace to anyone having mentally ill friends or family. Seidy Lopez was not exciting or pretty to me, and Jaime Gomez was boring and dull. Well, I was hoping for something really special and fresh because of the high rating of this movie, but it didn't touch me at all. There is no laughs or any particular feel for the characters in this film.

Go rent "Jalla Jalla!" for a refreshing adaption of the same story or go see "37°2 le matin (Betty Blue)" for a real love story, that's got it all - mental illness, deception, drama, love, life, humor, sex, sensuality and a truly disturbing and original storyline.

Blue and Beautiful
5 April 2003
This is a truly great movie, far from the Hollywood productions. This is an honest and wonderful film. No need for a sheet between the bodies when having sex - this is real - sexy and sensual. The story is fascinating and unpredictable. The acting is superb, and the filming, the light and colours are brilliant and beautiful.

Horrible
3 April 2003
An immoral sexist tale with no likeable caracters. They're all selfish, greedy and violent. It's all about justifying a plain second degree murder. There's just nothing to it - nothing touching or moving about it - just a predictable phony Hollywood show-off plastered with some glimmer and stardust, so it could lure some Oscars.

Far from Earth

Warning: Spoilers
*Spoilers* I liked the theme and the tension but got dissapointed as nothing seemed to turn out right for the main character - never really breaking out of the strict correctness of the fifties (and of the political correctness of 2002). The movie never dares to show the love and affection between the homosexual men, a stiff and stereotype kiss seen from a distance is all, and it never dares to even show us a kiss between a white woman and a black man.

Taboo, predjudice and cencorship is strengthened by this movie.

Hilarious!
12 March 2003
Excellent comedy! Woody's back on top.. Original and hilarious one-liners throughout the movie and right to the end.. Great performances and a fresh well-told classic story. Lots of twists and turns - the story really bends nicely, and with lots of hints and sarcasm.
