Pool of London (1951)
A realistic representation of post war London
I remember some scenes in this film being shot at the end of the street I lived in in East London. As a 12 year old boy I was fascinated by the way they moved the bus stop so Earl Cameron and Susan Shaw could pop into the nearby café for a drink. Other scenes were filmed in the local music hall, the Queens Theatre and in the Rotherhithe Tunnel. Every time I drive through there I remember this movie. And what a great film, the cast, plot, location all perfect. Along with other contributors I also cannot understand why there has been no DVD release. There are far less deserving films which have been released. If the powers that be ever read these comments please consider releasing this on DVD.
Blowing Wild (1953)
Great early 50's movie
I remember seeing this as a14 year old in England when it was first released. It has stuck in my mind ever since. The combination of Gary Cooper's world weary persona, Dimitri Tiomkin's evocative score, the great rendition of the title song by Frankie Laine and the powerful sense of loss and what might have been all combine to make a fantastic couple of hours. One thought did occur when I watched it again last night was how old the characters all were... We take it for granted today that most roles are played by 25-35 year old actors (and actresses)that to see Cooper, Stanwyck, Quinn, Bond etc. brings one up with start. Lovely film, though, and I look forward to seeing it again.
Open Range (2003)
A great throwback to the classic westerns of 30/40 years ago.
Forget any prejudice you may have about Kevin Costner's recent outings and go and see this film. Elements of Eastwood, Leone and Peckinpah with a dash of High Noon and Rio Bravo. Everything for boys from 16 to 60. I've just come back from the local multiplex and I was transported back the classic westerns of 40 years ago. Perfectly cast in all the major roles and the support. The cinematography, music score and art direction leave nothing to be desired. One small criticism, the final coda was a bit sentimental and could usefully have been trimmed. It reminded me of the old TV westerns where everyhing has to be wrapped up neatly in the final scene. Not withstanding that 9 stars and I can't wait for the DVD.
