Purple Rain (1984)

Gotta love Prince's "dramatic pacing". . .
25 February 2003
And I don't mean the pacing of the scenes. . I mean Prince's expression of anxiousness through physically pacing back and forth. It's the equivalent of a dastardly villain twisting his mustache when hatching an evil plot or when a male lead has an emotional scene where the situation would normally call for him to cry. . bawl even. . but instead, he HOLDS BACK the tears as hard as he can to show that HE CAN TAKE IT, bulging veins in his neck be damned! (picture, Tom Cruise as Maverick after Goose dies. . . ) My point is (and there is one), it's just bad acting. . and in Purple Rain, it runs rampant! Morris and Jerome's little hommage to "Who's On First?". . Prince's impromptu puppet show. . Appollonia's complete disregard for Minnesota's climate, highlighted by her Fredrick's of Hollywood looking motorcycle-wear. . it's all bad. So. . is there anything redeeming in this sucker? Well, it's open to opinion, but I love the little Purple guy's music. And THAT makes this movie worth watching. The guy might not be able to act worth a lick, but, DAMN! can he dance and sing! And Morris Day and the Time are very entertaining throughout. . even when they're bad, they're good. And it's these aspects that save what is otherwise, a horrible movie.

Almost too much to take in!
13 February 2003
I enjoyed this movie a great deal, but it was so visually stimulating that I found myself rushing to read the subtitles. By the end, I was exhausted. Does this reflect badly on me? I dunno. Maybe I should learn French. Audrey Tautou was mesmerizing. I wish she were my weasel. In my opinion, an excellent movie for those who have never seen a foreign film before. Light, funny, and unpretentious.

Odd in the best way. . .

Billy Crudup has that special quality. . something just makes you WANT to watch him. Almost Famous is a good example. So is this. Not an easy film to follow, but entertaining nonetheless. Crudup's character "FH" nudges the boundaries of an antagonist that you feel sympathy for. Should you? Who the hell knows?! I did at points. And when he smiles, you smile. . and when he cries, you cry. And what more could you ask for from a performance. The guy's talented. And Jack Black makes a great extended cameo. He's typically odd and funny, and he fits in the storyline perfectly. Definitely see this one.

The Suspension of Disbelief factor

This movie depends on how much you're willing to let slide. Lotta plot holes. Lotta stuff that just "don't make no sense". But on the plus side of the ledger, very creepy, very atmospheric, and some truly great scares (the first 1/2 hour will have the hairs on your arms standing on end). Will the scary stuff outweigh the "huh?" factor? You should check it out and see. And I also think this one would be better in the theater (but I think that's the case with all scary movies.)

Great Odd Humor

Not your cookie cutter "Dumb" comedy. Just little oddities that make you say, "What the hell was that all about?" Sam Rockwell and Steven Zahn have great comedic timing as well as a flair for understated physical comedy. It just made me laugh. . but I must warn that I've recommended this film to some of my friends, and it just didn't respond to their comedic sensibilities. Also, if you've ever been to a barmitzvah, the scene in the movie is just barely parody. Hilarious!

What a beginning!
8 January 2003
The first 20 minutes are perfect horror. Carol Kane is superb as the terrified babysitter, mood and camera work are perfect, and THE MUSIC! THE MUSIC! Unbelievable! This should have been kept as a short or just an episode of a horror anthology. Because the rest of the movie is brutal! Totally anticlimactic. We basically follow the "bad guy" around for the most part. Totally lost interest. Nicknamed the killer guy "Ned", because I could care less what his real name was.

Just watch the first part, and then move on folks!

10 out of 10 for the opening scene. 2 out of 10 for "Hanging w/ Ned"

For a weighted average of 5 out of 10.

Hilariously bad, in the worst way
1 February 2002
This was one horrendous movie. I read the other reviews for this stinker and I was expecting something shocking, something scary. . but there was nothing. . nothing that even got me to so much as jump. This would have been perfect MST3K fodder. The brutal dubbing, Olga the Super Bitch (in a very brief cameo I guess), the murdering of the word "occult" (pronounced 'OCK-pause-cult' in this movie), and the teeth. . my God the teeth! The Romanian butler guy looked like Lurch's homely cousin with dentures, and the dance instructor's choppers were reminiscient of Matt Dillon's in 'What About Mary?' The acting was horrible, and music (by Goblin?!), which I will admit was eerie at first, just became grating and, after a while, a source of jokes for me and the people I was watching this with (". . sounds like the cameraman has a sinus condition.") And then we meet our main protagonist, A witch with a sinus condition! Apnea is terrifying, or something. There's so much more that I could name that made me laugh (the 'hissing fight', the bat, the blind pianist standing up and yelling "You Stupid Bitch!" and sounding exactly like Gene Wilder when he screams it. . ), but I have to stop now. Feeling too negative. I'm gonna watch something really scary, like "Hellraiser" or the beginning of "When a Stranger Calls".. good scary or gory movies.
