Vikings (2013)
The example of Ragnar Lothbrok
Culture, religion, history, tactics, and everything about the Vikings is covered in this series, portraying important characters (or myths) about a raw, warlike people who depended on war, plunder, and love. The arc of England is perfect, from Ragnar sailing and conquering to his iconic death, and about this character we learn the value of being a man, how we should act with decision making, and how we should follow paths of victory, not savoring the taste of power but enjoying the taste of both victories and defeats, taking the weight of our mistakes.
After Ragnar's death, the series continues from the point of view of his sons and what his lineage has become, each of them has a personality inspired by his father, but also with influence from his own path, one has a thirst for revenge and power, the other for peace and prosperity, and others with goals of expansion and war, whatever it is always these layers of personalities are addressed in depth. Anyway, I recommend this series for historical and character learning.
The Thing (1982)
Simply John Carpenter in its essence
When we think of horror from the 80's we remember the slashers and the gore that these films had. But amidst so many, the horror genre still had differentiated works that would later become cults, among these there was The Thing. A work that arouses fear through strangeness and claustrophobia, a completely inhospitable environment with a danger that knows how to hide and defend itself. A world where science fiction and terror are intelligently mixed, even more so when the practical effects are perfect (better than CGI's). Each character has its importance there, and for this very reason the tension between them grows every time the monster captures and imitates one of them.
Dune (2021)
An epic among epics
Dune before it was even that movie was a book that inspired other works and made them great. If we think that this film arrived late in the cinema it should be generic and beaten, but not in the hands of Denis Villeneuve, a competent director with a clear vision of pure cinema, in his hands this work was built in a safe and epic way as the original work, which until then many said was impossible to achieve. Besides this, the heavy cast contributed to treat the plot in a serious way, something that is rare in today's cinema. The open and warm photography shows the magnitude of the universe these characters are in. And the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer once again proves to be the greatest composer in cinema. In short, a supreme example of science fiction cinema.
Stranger Things (2016)
Strangely Nostalgic
It is a science fiction and cosmic horror completely inspired by the classics of the 70s-80s, but its originality is unique, with a development from a formula that Netflix found and took advantage of very well. That is, the core of groups of characters who develop a mystery separately generating the taste of wanting more each episode, and so in the end their stories collide. The character development also stands out, each one gets the spotlight they deserve, like the example of Steve who in the first season is a bully and in the second season is a cool babysitter! The time soundtrack that is amazing, the action and mystery scenes very well balanced, and a universe that has a lot to develop. A current classic for sure.
Assassin's Creed (2016)
The mistakes of a bad adaptation
The mistakes already start with the doubt: How to adapt? - We morbidly believe that a game like Assassin's Creed has no way to be adapted, since each game is in a different way and context. However, we can hope for an adaptation from Oliver Bowden's books, but this is not the case. Here we see a poorly done copy of the First Assassin's Creed, but set in the Spanish Inquisition, or it should be that because for more than half of the film we see Callum Lynch, the protagonist, outside the Animus having conversations, tests, hallucinations, explanations and a lot of blah blah blah. In other words, they took the most boring things from the franchise and mixed them in a script that calls the viewer ignorant, because the need to explain everything is very irrelevant and yet they explain why things just happen. Why have other games adaptations recently been getting better? Simple, because it's made by fans for fans, by people who understand the feelings of those who lived the franchises, and this movie didn't capture any feelings of those who played at least one AC game.
Doragon Bôru Sûpâ Burorî (2018)
The best Dragon Ball movie
For those who say Dragon Ball has no story and is too shallow, this film shows the magnitude of the anime mythology about a warrior race that was decimated by a tyrant. From the very first scene on Planet Vegeta you realize how the creators wanted to give the fans a story worthy of such intense battles, and put intense ones at that! Every frame of this animation has a detail, every aspect of the fights has a meaning. This movie also turned a lot of things into canon that were not official, and it's something that the Dragon Ball Super series itself has been doing. A film at the height of Dragon Ball, with characters that we are passionate about and new ones that we have already gained respect for. Congratulations TOEI.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)
A lesson in how to do adaptation
Much better and superior to the first, a lesson not only of adaptation, but also a lesson in how to make a sequel. The film delivers a mix of Sonic 2 and Sonic & Knucles, developing a script that aims to please fans of the blue hedgehog, with a much stronger nostalgic feel in the scenario scenes that were in the game. There is an extremely important factor here: The expansion of Sonic's universe and mythology. If the first film was revolutionary, this one was even more so, because it adds a lot to the franchise and also to the world of cinema as a whole. The bad part of the movie is in the middle, with an unnecessary and boring sub plot, but at least with well constructed and directed scenes. And what about Jim Carrey? The guy loves the project that changed his life and pulled him out of the deep end, so he delivers his performance that we all love in a wonderful way. For more movies based on games like this!
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
A good start for something revolutionary
Fun and dynamic, with many easter-eggs and references to the games, appealing to pure nostalgia. Serving as a presentation film of the character and his villain, it is clear that it is an adaptation work that does not characterize all the same, but if done in a very good way has no problem, especially when Robotnik is played by the wonderful Jim Carrey, who in this film has the spotlight totally turned to his unique performance and that we all love. Put Sonic and Jim Carrey together, and you get doses full of nostalgia. Sonic's mythology is very little explored, but leaves you wanting to know more about the future of these characters and excited for the sequel. And also the revolution that this film caused in the film industry, because it made a studio listen to the fans who were already tired of weak adaptations of games, and thus presented us with a work worthy of the character that names the feature.
The Irishman (2019)
What to say about the direction?
A very well directed film by Scorsese (obviously), who in this film puts all his cinematographic talent on a very high level. The film lets you know what is happening on screen and this keeps you wanting to know more and more. The characters are very well worked and developed, each one having a weight in the plot that also directs the impeccable acting of Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino, who are chilling. It's three and a half hours of pure cinematographic art with the mastery of the great filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
Joker (2019)
A dangerous and gripping redemption
Joker is a splendid film, full of madness and at the same time moving, because knowing that the things Arthur does are wrong we also know why he does them, and that's where the danger comes in. As I said in the title, it's a journey of redemption, Arthur goes through emotional and psychological transformations that culminate in an explosion of good feelings in the midst of bad deeds. It's worth noting that Gotham is totally divided and left to the rats, with the population completely discontented, so Joker becomes a "hero" to a sick society is a portrait of today's reality. But there is only one sin this film commits: Is he really the Joker? If you change the character's name, it will be a movie about a psychologically damaged man. The insertion of characters like the Wayne family are well explored narrative resources, as is the name of the city (Gotham). But it's a completely different story from anything we've seen about the Joker in all media, which is good, but it can't be called an adaptation, but a completely original story.
The Batman (2022)
Dense but hopeful, and it has Nirvana.
The Batman is an investigative film with a mystery that develops and you participate by deducing the resolution of the case. The script is good, even more so when you focus on the emotional side of the characters. Although it is not an origin movie (thank God!) the character goes through the hero's journey, changing attitudes and even perspective, becoming much more visible at the end of the feature. The actors are very good, with emphasis obviously on Robert Pattinson (I never criticized, I always thought he was a good actor, so I expected he would be a good Batman). The photography is sensational, each frame makes an easy wallpaper. The soundtrack is impeccable, even more so with Nirvana as the theme. And for the fans of the Bat universe, you'll get a treat of Gotham characters, even referencing Falcone and Maroni's war and giving a new plot to Catwoman. The cliffhanger was too unnecessary, it could be taken out entirely and put the Joker in the interrogation scene that was deleted; besides that, it's unnecessary too as the movie works on its own, even though it has plans for sequels. I was missing a more investigative and serious film, such as a real Sherlock Holmes, and this is what I was delivered with. If you enjoy funny movies with generic hero origins, this movie is definitely not for you.
Studio 666 (2022)
Fun, funny, and very gory! Don't expect much more than that.
This film is as much a joke about the music world and the search for new albums, with the whole joke involving the "death of rock" and "rock is of the devil" being much more visible at the end. The piece is full of references to old horror movies, with clichés in every corner, but well executed, even Dave's possession is comparable to Jack Torrance's madness from The Shining (of course in totally different proportions). The violence is very explicit, which is totally normal in a horror and horror film. And the point that fails most in this film is the acting of the band members, but it is acceptable when you know that they are not actors, they are just musicians making a film that parodies reality. Each one gets a good amount of screen time, and the highlight is on Dave and him first discovering the secrets of the house and the Dream Widow band (created exclusively for the film).
