A series to be seen.
16 March 2024
My father, Robert was a navigator in a B-17 at the exact time and same places. He couldn't see well, so the made him the navigator. He wanted to pilot, but because his seeing ability he lost out.

This film meant the world to me, as my father, (who endured all of this and lived to 100 years old!)

I will watch this over and over, as this gives me the world that my father went through.

The actors are amazing, Adam Butler, and all others are so keen on making this film worth watching.

Anyone that has a parent in WW2 should watch this to make you feel what they felt.

If you are interested into looking into the WW2 history, start with this.

Poor Things (2023)
10/10
We are all born with baby brain.
12 March 2024
It's what we do with our life after living. This movie IMHO is about "Being Bella" we are all "Bella". This would make for a good college course in "Women Studies".

We are all born as Bella. We all make mistakes. WE do what we have to do.

"Poor Things" is a metaphor. I devoured this movie.

Emma Stone was so convincing, that I thought she was "Bella". She deserved the Oscar for this. (Even though I thought Lily Blackstone would win.) Bella lives the life that is raw.

It is painful to watch, but her innocence and finally her brain captures her body so she can make somewhat "human" decisions, Even though we as humans don't always make them.

Napoleon (2023)

Honest to gawd.
7 March 2024
This is a brilliant film both from a cinematography feat and Phoenix is him. I loved him here. He plays Napoleon perfectly.

The underwater world is magnificent.

Jaquin brings Napoleon to the screen as a figure that is hard to figure out. He is brilliant in so many ways, Yet, his emotions get the most of him and is mislead by love.

The scenes of battlefield and his dominance over the ground troops is flattering for him.

His fault is that he does have emotions that sometime his thoughts with personal parts. It does not affect his vision to carry out many planned attacks on his enemies.

I love this film for the above reasons.

You haters gotta go away.

This is a beautiful film. In so many aspects, I can't even deliver them all!

Matthew is on target all the way. You can't even see him as MM. You see this as a poor soul that has made mistakes and cannot accept them.

He and his wife (who is visibly hurt from an affair) are having such a difficult time. You see and feel it.

His decision is founded in "why even try?"

The Sea of Trees, is a haunted, very special place. The souls that gave up live there, but I hope they made it to heaven.

I loved this, not for happiness, but of caring.

Please watch this and know you will learn all about each life.

This is what us older generation have been waiting for....
17 December 2023
Do NOT look at the low star reviews.

They know nothing of the world and what it is/isn't capable of.

This is a movie to be digested and processed. A psychological thriller that is almost too damn close to history and unrest that we, as a country, are experiencing at this time.

Sometimes, you must leave the world behind to live. The actors are top notch.

Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, all sound and good performances.

The first hour, I thought it was going on a different direction. Lovely vacation home, parents needing to take kids away on an impromptu vacay that would prove to be life altering.

In the end, we might have to take matters into our own personal hands.

I get it, but I am 67.

Yes, I agree, it's a mess. It's hard to watch on so many levels. It makes your head hurt. You are confused. Who do you love and whom do you trust? You want to be in charge of your life, but are you really in charge?

This is a very chaotic film. It never gives you a darn break for almost all of it. Fascinating, but you want to stop watching.

I wanted to turn off, like 3 times. Everything everywhere part was un-centered and ridiculous. I kept with it. I kept watching as life delivered was indeed true.

(we) as a whole are a mess. Yes. I know you are in control. But are you really. Have you really sought out your life.

Can we deliver on a level to make things important stand out above trivial things that embrace us and capture our lives?

In summary, if you want to get down in the grit, watch it. Make things happen. This is what this story is about. Chaotic and resolution.

This. Is. What this A24 film is about. I get it.

I started watching because of the good reviews.
2 June 2022
I can't even make it to the third episode. I usually get what is going on, without difficulty. But for the life of me, hardly any of this nonsense makes any sense.

The writing and the darkness make it so hard to get through. Like going into someones home, of COURSE they are going to show up.

Don't understand the high ratings, but it's a very big "no" for me.

I'm here because I live in Baltimore.
26 April 2022
Well, actually I live in a rural area in Baltimore County, but am very aware of the BCPD problems, corruption, and largely the lack of the SA (MM) input into the judicial system.

So far, (Epi 1) this is absolutely true what is being played in this 1st episode. Brutality and lack of; is the day to day 'exposed' problem that endures the lawlessness that occurs daily on the streets of Baltimore. Who REALLY owns the city? The criminals, the innocent, or the BCPD?

On top of this, you have a over zealous 'Gun Trace Task Force' that goes way beyond it's scope. Planting items, guns, drugs, to catch whoever is in their way.

You have good cops and bad cops. This has always been the case from the test of time. By in large we have police commissioners that are ineffective. How can they be? So many are here and gone before the sun sets. Heck, you can look at BC Mayor and that alone is enough to tell you that this city is ill. Just as many mayors have been corrupt, (Sheila Dixon, SRB, Catherine Pugh) gawd, the list goes on and on.

If you really want to see how Baltimore is, and other cities like NYC and Chicago, Philly, and Detroit look no further then this story. This is the story that needs to be told.

It's all there. Right in front of us.

Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel (2022 TV Special)

I don't watch standup
3 April 2022
But after seeing Jerrod on SNL as host ~ he had such a refreshing voice and way about him I thought I'd check out his new program on HBO.

Boy, am I glad I did! He is new, modern, and talks in conversation that is unlike some comedians today.

I would love to know more about him. Well, his secrets were many and prolific.

A ride and half and not at the same time.
14 March 2020
This is one amazing series. Just when you think you have it all "down", it bursts forth with another character or another time. This is not a "shut my eyes for 2 minutes" type of series. It you did, you'd miss so much. Highly recommend. What a great German series, Germany is really up there making great series now. Both this and "Pagan Peak" are suburb shows. You don't even notice you are reading subtitles. You can almost figure out what they are saying without subtitles. One of the best in a long time.

Not the series.
12 March 2020
Oh, I wanted to like this. (I was an avid season watcher) but this fell as flat as a spring pickle in the hot summer sun. I rented this for 2.99 - because I didn't get to the theaters. Boy, am I glad I didn't get there. There just were no redeeming qualities about this movie. It was so???? What do I want to say, predictable and stilted? Even Maggie couldn't bring it up to the high standard is used to be. NO recommend.

Messiah (2020)
10/10
I am not religious. Let's start there.
12 January 2020
I was not going to watch this. I don't care for the 'feel-good' movies or series that want to push you into "believing". If I had wanted to "believe", I'd certainly would have done this over the past 64 years. We came upon this series this middle of January as a lark. A friend suggested it, so since our football team was out of the AFC, we thought, why not? What is laid before us is an intertwining story of the (our) Messiah, The Second Coming, or whatever you want to call it. This involves politics, and sharp stories about what would happen, "if". Believers that we now come to task. The religion doesn't matter, Muslim, Jewish, and Christianity are all in the circle here. There are many cities that do not embrace this coming, and this shows what would happen if they came to pass. The acting is on target, the Messiah is well, himself. As you expect. Perfect writing, great acting, and perhaps an opening of a heart.

In 2020 ~ still a treasure.
10 January 2020
Very timely even after all these years. I've been on a "Sir Anthony Hopkins" kick because of his portrayal of Pope Benedict XVI in "Two Popes". Found this piece of work, and don't know how I missed it. Still to this day, it's a treat to digest Anthony Hopkins in all his versatility. Imagine being a servant in a world that was just going to WWII. Having an opinion, or thought, or feeling, but not able to "say the words". As in our lifetimes and others, many folks have been quieted by their status in the world. Even to this day. The flavor is delicious, as in his general love for Emma Thompson, in a world that was so wrong in so many ways. Enjoy.

Engrossing, slow burn, turned up a knotch.
9 January 2020
From the moment I laid eyes on Woody Harrelson, and his earring and hot dog, I knew we were in for a treat. I (believe it or not) have just recently come to Christian Bale as a great actor....just have not seen movies with him in them. I do love Casey Affleck, so I thought I spend a snowy afternoon watching a rich story stemming from the dregs of a society that is at best impoverished and condemned to life of working, living, and existing in a PA small town. Negative reviews are here too, but I love this slow burn, I can see in Christian Bales eyes a faraway wish he could make good on helping his brother Rodney and very ill father to get out of the town. Do yourself a favor and watch.

Dracula (2020)

Totally a ride. Dracula = ridiculious hilarious!
7 January 2020
Don't read the negs. This is not a normal "Dracula" by Bram. This is a completely different "ride" and what a ride it is. We enjoyed this immensely. BBC started a fresh go on an old subject. Love the Nuns. Love Hacker (Johnny Blue Eyes) Enjoy the ride, and oh, don't worry about the book. You'll be pulled in!

A drag.
23 February 2019
Boy, it's hard to keep watching this. Very predicable, same story, different actors. I felt compelled to turn it off twice. There just is not enough going on. And, I kept watching "Lady GaGa" versus the character. I just couldn't be convinced that she was "A Star is Born". Sadly, with all the very high ratings, this will get at least a nod from "The Academy". Bradly Cooper was great, although ~ the drinking, and drunkenness just got to be the norm. First part (1/4) was good, but fell apart.

Private Life (2018)

This was an absolute treat!
9 October 2018
I was scrolling through the long list of Netflix "what to watch next" and found this little gem. It stars (Billions star/John Adams) Paul Giamatti, along with Kathryn Hahn as his wife. I watch whatever Paul Giamatti is in, he really is a great actor and enjoy seeing him. This is a nice surprise, and envelopes you right into their life of going through IFV and beyond, actually. It chronicles their life as an (ahem) older couple trying to their very best to keep trying despite setbacks. Very charming, funny, endearing, and a wonder what people do when they have to go through such hard decisions. I highly recommend this, as a wonderful treat to sit back and enjoy.

Dame Judi Dench and her Munshi
17 September 2018
This is an all around great film. Most especially because of the chemistry between Judi Dench (Queen Victoria) and Ali Fazal (Abdul Kareem). Judi Dench is so believable as Queen Victoria, you'd have to pinch yourself not to believe it. She is at the top of her game showing the audience that she is quite the Sovereign of a Nation and demands the respect of the people she works for. Ali Fazal is perfect in his role as "Munshi" (her humble teacher and friend). It's easy to watch and flows beautifully. Just lovely with great teachings.

The First (2018)

Don't base viewing this on negative reviews.
15 September 2018
This series is nothing like you'd expect, based on reading low-ball negative narratives. I ask that you go with an open mind, and put yourself in the 'shoes' of the characters, before you disregard this series. Sean Penn is truly the backbone of "The First". He is why this goes from mediocre to outstanding. You actually are viewing this through his eyes. Great story line, excellent cinematography, and acting is right up there in the 'high' category.

Castle Rock: The Queen (2018)
Season 1, Episode 7
10/10
Absolutely the best of the best "The Queen"
2 September 2018
Already wrote the review, and something happened and it went away! Ugh. Ok, anyway, this is at the top of the heap of not only this series, "Castle Rock" but seriously one of the best episodes of anything I have seen. This was so unique in the filming, the writing, the cinematography, and of course, Sissy Spacek herself. We are reliving her memories, and her reality almost at the same time. You see what we haven't seen behind the scenes as "Ruth" these past weeks. Not always sure where we are in the episode, we are left with a "crumb" of remembrance for us, as the viewer, and her as "Ruth". The past is so built on "fear" that it's almost good to see the reality. I hope the Academy gives their 'nod' to Ms. Spacek next Spring to give her what she deserves.
