Sonar Kella (1974)
A masterpiece by Ray
Satyajit Ray is a legendary director and author. His Feluda series is perhaps the most popular and loved detective series in Bengal. Like the books, the movies too were excellent. One of these is "Sonar Kella". It is the story of a boy named Mukul who is supposedly a "Jatiswar". With Dr. Hajra, Mukul goes to Rajasthan, in the hope to identify the Golden Fortress Mukul mentioned frequently. Feluda is appointed by Mukul's father to ensure his safety. There are 2 smart criminals, who followed Mukul in the hope of getting the location of the Golden Fortress and the treasure (which was actually a misunderstanding as it later unfolds). Feluda must save him from them.
I tried to keep the summary short. Now coming to the review. The plot is crisp with no unnecessary elements. There is a proper blend of detection, mystery, thrill and humour. The direction is superb and the scenes are well shot and arranged, given the time when this movie was made. Feluda was played brilliantly by Soumitra Chatterjee, and the villain Mandar Bose was also properly portrayed. All the actors acted so naturally, that it blurs the line between reality and fiction. All is all, a complete package of entertainment. Go and watch it on any platform (like Amazon Prime or Jio Cinema). I am sure you will enjoy every minute of it.
Interstellar (2014)
One of the best science fiction movies out there!!
Interstellar. The name itself indicates that it is based on space. The story goes that Earth is in danger of destruction and that human race needs a new planet to survive. Cooper the main protagonist of the story, is one of the best pilots at NASA. NASA secretly launches a mission incorporating Cooper and Dr. Brand (the daughter of the Professor who is the leading force behind the mission). Due to a gravitation anomaly, there is a wormhole near Saturn and they travel through it to unknown planets looking for habitability.
The concept is quite good and reflects what might happen to the human race in future. With Christopher Nolan involved, you can expect some fantastic plot, which will keep your eyes glued to the screen. The graphics are awesome and realistic. And most importantly, it is actually fuelled by real scientific facts and predictions.
There are some emotional moments involved, and we are really able to feel it. The possibility of the existence of five dimensional beings was something that truly intrigues me, and I was really pleased with the inclusion of this concept. Time travel is also involved.
Like every movie, there are definitely a few flaws. First, it would have been good if there was a clarification of who are 'they' and why are 'they' suddenly helping us. Secondly, we are left in a dilemma about what happens to Dr. Brand in the end. Third, I could not make sense of the scene where Dr. Mann tries to kill Cooper. That was unnecessary and irrational.
But certainly the merits are far more than the demerits, and I would strongly recommend you to watch it. It is worth your time, I can assure you.
