Horses: The Story of Equus (2002)
Awesome awesome awesome
This is an excellent achievement for the filmmakers. I was lucky enough to see this at a special preview at an IMAX theatre, and the cinematography is superb with the aerial shots from the chopper worth the price of admission alone. It tells the story from birth of 3 horses and the different paths their lives take - one escapes to the wild, one becomes a stunt horse for the movie industry and one becomes a racehorse. It shows how each of the "career" paths taken by each horse differ, as well as touching on a brief history of horses. You don't need to have an interest in horses to enjoy this film - the photography, direction and sound of this film will blow you away. This is meant to be seen on the big, big screen so see it while you can on an IMAX screen or any cinema with a larger than normal display to get more enjoyment of it.
Well done to the filmmakers and I hope this film succeeds to encourage you to make more films like this.
True Lies (1994)
Cliche-filled piece of trash
Is there any racial stereotype or action movie cliche this movie doesn't contain??!!! Disappointing that James Cameron went from thoughtful films such as The Abyss & The Terminator films to this simple, brainless piece of popcorn crap.
However, the action scenes were well filmed no matter how ridiculous their intention, and Jamie Lee Curtis sure is one of the sexiest women on the planet despite the obvious gratuitous shots of her body.
James Cameron has the potential to write thoughtful, mind-expanding, provocative scripts so why he wastes time on schlock like this i will never understand. Imagine my amazement when i realise he is making True Lies 2! I can hardly wait.........(not!)
2 out of 10
American History X (1998)
Watch "Romper Stomper" for an Australian take on this theme
American History X is one of the best dramas i've seen in a long time. The direction is excellent and it was a great choice to film Derek's past in black and white, which is highly symbolic of his racial views of the world at that time of his life. The direction is highly expressionistic with slow motion and extreme close-ups used extensively throughout.
The Australian film "Romper Stomper" should be billed as a "double feature" of sorts with this film. That film follows a group of neo-nazi skinheads around Melbourne and shows the racial hatred directed towards the asian population in the city. Whilst it deals on resolving issues & conflict within the skinhead group itself as opposed to resolving their racial weakness, it gives a great representation of the Australian struggle with racism the same way American History X does for the USA.
American History X - 9 out of 10, only because the ending was a tad predictable and the change in Derek's character could have been explained a bit better.
Chopper (2000)
The best Aussie movie ever!!!!
Awesome script, brilliantly shot, kick-ass cast - EVERYTHING about this film is EXCELLENT. Eric Bana does this better than anyone could and hopefully will kickstart a successful movie career for him as he has great potential. Great humour for a film which is quite gruesome in spots.
