In this 'coming of age' saga we follow the trials of a young Comanche girl trying to prove her metal in the prairies and woodland of early 18th century North America. However, as well as the big cat and the bear she encounters an even more formidable foe to overcome - the Predator.
To me this is a well done summer adventure movie to be watched in the afternoon. There are some great fight scenes with wild animals and it's great to see the protagonist Nanu (Amber Midthunder) cutting her teeth and winning her stripes in this beautiful landscape. Honourable shout out to her amazing dog too - a great addition.
Look, it's OK. I managed to watch the whole thing without giving up! It has some great cinematic charm - a simple story, amazing landscapes, and impressive wild animal scenes. However, I almost feel like it may have made a better movie without the Predator in it! The movie feels like it wants to be a 12A rather than a 15 - perhaps if they'd dialled back the gore a bit this would have made a better family movie.
I don't know about you but I didn't find it that entertaining to watch a bunch of hapless natives and settlers getting diced and cubed by an invisible hi-tech weaponised monster with their chances about zero. The wild animal fights were much more frightening and engaging.
I understand from the other reviews that this is a cut above the franchise standard (not difficult) but I think this is likely more down to Nanu and her dog than the Predator - incidentally - most of the time I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was watching Mulan fighting an Uruk-Hai!
