The Cleaner (2021)
Greg Davies being creatively different - Bravo!
Yes! This series is very different to his other work (Mandown, Taskmaster etc) and that's what makes it interesting.
My first few episodes in to series one I soon realised that this was not what I was expecting. I cracked on with it and soon realised that it's pretty weird and offbeat but that's what made it more appealing.
If your'e looking to watch some exceptional (I think Greg calls them proper actors) such as Helena Bonham Carter, Ruth Madeley and Simon Callow etc bring quirky and bonkers character actors to life then dig in.
I actually really found some of the writing deceptively introspective and on-point covered in a layer of weird encounters and storylines and Greg brings his character 'Wickey' into the light as a pretty cool loser. I really like him and want to punch him in equal measure in nearly every scene and episode lol!! Reminded me personally of the late and great Rik Mayall and his comedy delivery at times in The Young Ones and Bottom.
I think it's great that Greg gets to star and write in something that he obviously loves doing and yes it's not going to be for everyone but I for one think it's enjoyable randomness and quirky fun and great to see something different from Greg as a writer and comedian in exploring new material. :)
The Patient (2022)
If Dexter went for therapy...
Imagine if Dexter went for psychotherapy and that's enough info to describe the premise of this show without giving away too much. Solid acting from Steve Carell and I'm looking forward to seeing this evolve as the show moves forward. Make sure you watch it with little background noise or distraction as it's pure character discussion and nuanced details.
However, I recommend you save up episodes to watch as each episode is only 20 or so minutes long and this was a little frustrating and caused me to lose the feeling of atmosphere and investment in the story. No need to spoil the storyline by telling you anything here as it's a 'watch it for yourself' show. I went into it with little pre knowledge and feel that's a better way to watch most new shows.
Hope you enjoy as I have so far.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Not what I expected....
Didn't know what to expect after seeing less than favourable reviews online etc. Its pretty quirky and likeable but it is a little more juvenile than I expected. Nice cast but the CGI is a little underwhelming compared to what we know is possible at the moment. The episodes are also really quite short and that
bugged me a little. I could see where the writers were going for laughs and comedic asides during the four episodes I watched but I really wasn't feeling it. Perhaps they need to time to get into their stride with the show.
I'll keep watching in the hope it finds its potential going forward.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Outright 'Spoof' fest with the clue being in the title. It delivered for me.
Kristen Bell was great in Veronica Mars and The Good Place. She is great in this parody of popular murder mystery genre that we have seen so much of lately.
Despite its obvious desire to mock, it actually had some good thriller-esque moments and Jessica Fletcher (Murder She Wrote) style investigative parts.
It's fun, raunchy in parts and perfectly reminds us to not take it so seriously when we get too serious on storyline development!
And Neil, played by Tom Riley, was utterly delicious. Just saying....
Intelligence (2020)
Watched on a whim and found a funny and smart British comedy!
This show would probably not be appreciated by audiences outside of the UK perhaps, as the comedy is based around a team of employees at a cyber security government agency based in a town in southern England.
The writing is funny, nuanced, and weird. The cast of characters are lovely, offbeat and awkward. Nick Mohammed who writes the show also stars as one of the main characters. He nails it with a likeable and naive employee desperate to make friends and impress. Add in the addition of the unexpected comedy talent of David Swimmer as the brusk all American NSA agent and you've got some funny stuff and some great physical comedy too.
It didn't really grab me until the second to third episode and then I was hooked. Season 2 carried on the enjoyment and laughs and I'm definitely invested for a third season. Fingers crossed.
Worth a watch.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
True crime podcasting, comedy, murder mystery and Hollywood legends. It wins!
Not going to play it down and be cool in my review this was absolute perfection in my opinion. I LOVED IT!
If like me, you have a penchant for true crime podcasts or the genre in general, this show nails the current love and popularity (and in some cases down-right obsession) the modern world has for theses stories. Mix that with the true legendary Hollywood and comedy talent of Steve Martin and Martin Short, and then add a splash of the gorgeous, and I'll confess truly delightful Selena Gomez, and you've nailed it.
Yes, at first I was concerned that Steve Martin and Martin Short might be a negative aspect as I haven't really seen them in much since their hey day movies of the 80's and 90's, but I was completely wrong. They both gave, for me, such personable and likeable portrayals of their characters. They were funny, weird, campy and vulnerable in all the right places. I liked Selena Gomez too and was fascinated by her super deep sexy voice. They all have great chemistry together and couple that with a lovely set location and it really worked me for.
I liked the format used with narration overlay by the characters in the style of true podcasting shows and add some quirky music and you've got a nice authentic feel to the episodes.
Story arc was good and well mapped and supporting characters and characters side stories gave it some real heart. Nice twists and turns heading into the season finale and you've got me ready and waiting for season 2.
Wolf Like Me (2022)
Knew nothing going into this show and was pleasantly surprised by it!
I thought this turned out to be a real gem of a show for me. Story and acting of the two main characters gave me all the feels (funny, sad, weird, awkward, heart-felt) with an added supernatural twist. Supporting actors are just right and everyone was likeable. Sometimes I like the premise of a show but I just can't stand one of the actors for some reason and that can really put me off. Not in this case though.
A nice step away from the predictable 'norm' of these show genres we regularly get offered. I found myself wanting equal amounts of the blossoming romance and quirky werewolf origin story. I have a real love of Australian made TV shows and this was no different.
Without giving any spoilers I thought the creature reveal was really well done and unnerving.
It was quite short overall but perhaps just the right amount really in hindsight and I really hope it get a second seasons as it really should.
Severance (2022)
Offbeat and secretive story premise.........I'm invested and I need answers!
This is one of those shows that's quirky and you just really aren't sure what's happening. It's good, I didn't lose interest when I realised it wasn't a comedy in the traditional sense. I found myself focussed on looking for clues as to what it was going to be about. It's just the right amount of setting the feeling of being a 'normal' office environment but clearly it's darker than that!
I enjoyed some of Adam Scott's previous work and was expecting that style from him in this to be honest. I was thankfully wrong on that. His performance is strong and I liked him. In fact all the actors give their characters just the right amount of offbeat like ability so far. Dialogue is smart and poignant at the right time too.
I'm really looking forward to watching this further as I'm desperate for more information and clues. Love that feeling :)
Don't take my word for it, watch it yourself :)
Resident Alien (2021)
It's fun, quirky nonsense..exactly what you need.
I really like this show, it's fun with a daft storyline for the most part. Main actor Alan Tudyk nails uncomfortable arrogant 'alien stuck on earth' notion really well in a weird and funny way. Personally, I really like the Sheriffs character and the actor who plays him has a great comedy delivery style, also notable for me is Darcy, the best friend bartender, who's bonkers but in a 'I'd be friends with her way'. Other characters in the show really start to shine by end of season 1 and into season 2, so give it time.
In season 1 it offers some heartfelt moments and story and in most recent season 2 they expand that farther. These story arcs may not satisfy some who wish to ignore human feelings and don't want reminding on the less funny parts in life, but I enjoyed these parts and felt it gave overall a bit more to the characters and supports the overall main storyline of the show which I wont reveal so not to spoil.
See for yourself if you think it's for you.
Mother/Android (2021)
I watched this so you don't have to!
I normally look for the best in a movie and offer a fairly reasonable review, but sorry this whole film was absolute codswallop!
The opening scenes trick you into thinking this could be a enjoyable ride but alas it falls flat completely for the rest of the movie. Boring, underdeveloped story and the ending just made me pissed off and not provoked into thought or feeling from what I'd watched.
Honestly, don't bother with it.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
Stark and unnerving story for fans of edgy Sci-fi.....
Raised by wolves is weird and off. And that's why I liked it! Yes some of the story in season 1 is a little slow in places and contrived but get past that and enjoy the great story arc of the androids known as 'mother' and 'father'. Thought these two actors have brilliantly portrayed themselves as these two likeable characters, acting within the constraints of the character (androids) but offering some really engaging dialogue and action.
Their planetary location in season 1 is stark and uninviting, adding to the discomfort of their situation and story. Season 2 offers a far superior location and I think has helped the story more. No spoilers on any of that from me though.
I will say I do find the children's characters and the actors that play them not as likeable. Not sure what is is that I can't engage with there but that's each to their own.
Season 2 is proving to be even better in story and some of the younger actors are becoming better though. Enjoy it for what it is - science fiction :)
Reacher (2022)
You won't regret watching this!
Wow! This show went beyond my expectations. I enjoyed Tom Cruise in the role of Jack Reacher but Alan Ritchson now owns this role. His sheer physical presence really adds to the intriguing story and atmosphere. Solid acting from the star and supporting cast with fight scenes (notably the prison shower scene) so well staged and executed that I watched it more than once I'm not afraid to admit.
I will happily watch as many seasons as they want to make :)
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Ignore professional critics! As a fan this is excelled as Star Wars anthology for me.
As a longtime fan of the Star Wars universe it's had a lot of hits and misses since the glory of the original films for me. The Mandalorian and now The Book Boba Fett as brought the greatness back to the franchise.
Thanks to the now possible incredibly realistic and slick CGI and location details possible, I feel like I'm truly immersed in the what feels at times like an epic space western. Story was solid, acting was on-point and I found myself chatting online with my friend's enthusiastically after each episode and looking forward to the next. I engaged with all the cast in their characters and didn't find anyone utterly miscast nor annoying.
Listen to the fans and give this another well deserved season.
Peacemaker (2022)
Honestly, this was exponentially greater than I thought it was going to be!
I personally want to thank James Gunn and the stellar cast of Peacemaker for giving me a bloody brilliant , fun, over the top but ultimately engaging story and experience for my viewing pleasure! I've watched so many shows and movies in this genre and this truly stands out for me.
Opening dance sequence is inspiring, the cast, especially John Cena, made this not only bonkers but at times heart rendering and thought provoking. Comedy was strong, risky and on-point thanks to the writing of James Gunn and ability of the cast. Action scenes were nuts and just as you would hope and the storyline didn't disappoint me. Musical score even had me looking up some of the tracks I heard online, so added bonus I received an additional education on rock music bands :)
I thought James Gunn was a lunatic when I heard about Guardians of the Galaxy all those years ago and as he proved me utterly wrong on that too I'm grateful he has the genius and balls to make stories from the lesser known anti-hero characters that tend to get ignored, and uses his great talent to provide entertainment at this level. My advice is just watch it and enjoy and the ride.
Dune (2021)
Sounds and visuals make this movie more of an experience!
We expect as movie watchers to enjoy a satisfying and comfortable tale to enjoy and watch. This movie intensified the experience of watching by providing sound and visuals that provoked me to feel on edge and ultimately made me more engaged in what was happening! Bravo!
I wasn't comfortable watching it but that made it more fun to me overall. It was weird and dystopian but that's how I imagine it would probably really feel if you were there in reality. Like playing a VR horror game it evoked unsettling feelings but I wanted to see it through!
Cast were appropriately intense and well cast and Timothée Chalamet was lovely to watch. Just the right amount of innocence with undertones of darkness brewing. Visuals were good (perhaps a little dark in some scenes to catch action and detail) overall I thought it was great and will look forward to next chapter. Watch and decide for yourself :)
House of Gucci (2021)
The cast and visual style make this movie watchable.
Lady GaGa has such an acting intensity and engaging presence at times in this movie that I found it easy to ignore the lack of solid storyline progression. I also enjoyed Jared Leto's character portrayal personally of one of the Gucci family members. It was fun and whimsically sad at the same time. Based on true events it seemed to gloss over lots of details of the events leading up to the ill-fated outcome of the tale and left a lot unexplained or explored.
However, the movie was visually lovely and felt genuinely authentic in time period portrayal, giving it an immersive feel into a past gone by. I was expecting more but wasn't left unsatisfied thanks to cinematography and cast performance. Watch it for your own experience and then use the internet to learn more details on the legacy story it's based around (that's what i did).
Scream (2022)
Underwhelming and disappointing :(
Sorry, but this movie just wasn't great. I appreciate what the filmmakers were hoping to achieve for this once great slasher premise, but it just didn't have the elements needed to make this work. Characters were not likeable and the brief parts given to legacy characters were rushed and empty in contribution to story. Identifying the killers proved easy and not the same as the original where it was a tasty twist to discover who they were. However, watching a movie is a personal experience to the watcher and you may really enjoy it, so watch it yourself to make your own mind up.
