Daria: Jake of Hearts (1999)
Jake's ticker halts; Daria snubs DJs
The story begins as two DJs from a local radio station show up outside Lawndale High to begin broadcasting their morning program on location for a week. Apart from playing cheesy pop songs, they reward students with cheap merchandise after asking them what makes them "mental in the morning".
That evening, at dinnertime, Jake loses his temper after Helen reprimands him for putting too much shredded cheese on his taco, which went against his doctor's orders. Ironically, he suffers a heart attack and ends up in the hospital. Because of this, Quinn quickly becomes obsessed with studying the human heart, and Jake's overbearing mother comes by to care for him after he became sedentary.
Now, it's evident that Jake's stress-related heart attack was brought on by negative reinforcement from his no-good father. However, as the story culminates, Jake is revived when Daria reveals his father was dead at his age, and she also publicly humiliates those two obnoxious DJs who have been bombarding her for a week, which I thought was the highlight of the episode.
This episode is highly recommended for any true-blue Daria fan. Not only will it make you laugh, but to some extent, it'll make you think.
Daria: Monster (1998)
Quinn Morgendorfer shows her true colors.
Daria is given an assignment to make a short film for English class. She chooses her sister, Quinn, as the main subject. She borrows a camcorder from her father and, with the assistance of her friend Jane, follow Quinn around during her daily routine. Daria's intention behind this assignment was to expose Quinn's superficial and ignorant ways, deeming her the subject of disparagement. However, during the final edit of the film, Daria's conscience gets the better of her. She unwillingly manifests that Quinn has a good side for expressing her concern about social issues in the narrative, such as the environment. Quinn gets blind praise for this by her peers, much to Daria's chagrin. Meanwhile, Jake is stewing over his dysfunctional childhood from watching home movies of himself as a child sustaining injuries after falling off his bicycle, over and over again.
I wish that Quinn Morgendorfer's shallow nature was brought to the light of day. People like that don't deserve to have any social status whatsoever.
