Tales of the Unexpected: The Man from the South (1979)
This little piggy
Worth watching just to hear a young Pamela Anderson asking if it's worth a finger. I'd imagine back in the late 70's/early 80's many a man would have offered her a finger, especially for a car. I digress, first of the TOTU in series in sequential episodic order. Had an American/ British mix which encapsulated the following series with many being set in each country. Often the production values differed greatly and some of the tales haven't stood the test of time, perhaps my not even have stood the contemporary time in which they were filmed / aired either. All in all a good start. You'll have to watch it for yourselves if you don't know the story .
Scars of Dracula (1970)
Jenny Handley
Had her knockers....... But I wasn't one of them.... A positively upfront and pert performance from her. Very perky. I kept abreast of all her scenes. In addition, Christopher Lee played Christopher Lee playing Dracula playing Christopher Lee. I did miss Van Helsing in this one; it never feels like a Hammer House Dracula without Peter Cushing appearing somewhere along the line.... And Roy Castle, minus his trumpet.... Mind you if he'd been in this one and saw Jenny Handley we may all have seen his trumpet; so small mercies I guess. Oh yeah, some bloke called Dennis Waterman appeared... I wonder what happened to him? Anyway, Jenny stole the show, could've staked Dracula in the heart with the point of one of those. Happy days.
Man v. Food (2008)
Great Insight to the Us of A's Food
What can i say? Where can i start? Is every ingredient in American food super processed? Bacon, ham, beef, fries, bread, sauce, cheese. Every time I see a salad or a vegetable on this show it seems to be apologising for having the temerity to appear. Add super sugar sodas and a frenzied crowd and you have the perfect recipe (no pun) for a tour through everything that's wrong with food in the good ol' US of A. Every State appears to have its own dish, which by extension appears to be the same as every other State differentiated only by .... Well I don't know the answer to that. Great to watch though, purely for the immense greed and lack of self awareness on display. I'm off to have a lettuce.
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Was That It?
What a mish mash of a final 15 minutes. Was it a ghost story, a tale of failing marriage, a tale of deception, or all 3, or none of them? The premise was based on that tired old formula - man (always the man) uproots his family and moves them from a thriving community to one that doesn't exist, to a house in the middle of nowhere, a house with a past. Of course the wife never gets to know about this past before buying as the Agent selling the house never shares it with her, yet tells the husband all.... Where / when?. Husband then abandons said wife and his child to go to his busy job. Left alone all day in a dark, lonely, decaying house ( which never gets as much of a lick of paint) Wife/ daughter see and hear things but Husband never believes them when he's told. Tells his wife she's going crazy etc etc....... Until the truth slowly spills out. Yawn.
Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)
Really?
Those 2 parents have a fabulous number of nights out in that first week of shenanigans. Of course every incident has to be rationalised or made the centre of a comedy routine. Any opportunity to leave an adult and child alone together cannot be passed up. I always wonder why a demon takes a week or two to cause bedlam and starts by making subtle noises or affecting an inanimate object in such a minor way that it passes almost unnoticed except to the ever alert viewer who is furiously scanning every security camera video for evidence of something sinister. If the demon just killed everyone in 30 seconds of havoc at the start of the film we would all be spared another 90 minutes when we could be doing something more fruitful; like watching something more believable.
The Sweeney: Supersnout (1975)
It's a strange one
Where is Haskins?
Carter with a 'tache racially abusing the Japanese
A farcical model of the potential crime scene.
A sleazy snout who appears to know international jewel thieves and yet takes backhanders from Regan for information in outside toilets.
Not the best episode.
Total Recall (1990)
Looks so dated now
Never realised before how much green screen was used for this film. Really ages it . Sharon Stone was a positive though. Arnie doesn't get the credit his acting deserves; he's never been bad actually.
Fantasy Island (2020)
Hammy Fun
Not in the lightest bit scary or believable. Fun though. As with all these type of films the cast is as handsome and beautiful as ever and the make up is perfect even two hours in. Nothing really offensive in this, perhaps a bit of gore. Everyone from age 12 up in the family could watch this together.
Love Strikes Twice (2021)
Surprisingly Good
Not schmaltzy. Great lead character. Made me smile. Little gems like this are so easy to miss in among the blockbusters. More of this type of film please.
