Just say gno
22 February 2011
The Disney studios made some classic live action movies (Old Yeller, Mary Poppins, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) and some non-classics and lots of "meh" in between.

This movie has some fun elements, but is mostly "meh". It gets two stars for Walter Brennan, two stars for the redwoods, and two stars for the gnome special effects, which are well done.

Young kids will probably enjoy it. Older kids and adults probably won't enjoy it.

Overall this is a pleasant, but undistinguished, product from the Disney factory of the 1960s.

Good to see Joel McCrea
12 December 2009
I did not know that this movie existed until happening upon it on AMC. It was very pleasant to see Joel McCrea back in action. His performance is enough to recommend this film. The scenery, mostly filmed in Banff National Park from what I can gather, is an equally pleasing costar to McCrea. There is much filler footage of animals doing animal actor tricks which is silly and distracting. At these points the movie feels like a sub-par Disney nature film, but the main story line of McCrea's aging rancher out to capture a wild mustang and bonding with a young American Indian orphan in the process is a nice story that rises above the lame moments.

If you like Joel McCrea, spectacular Rocky Mountain scenery, or are in the mood for a straightforward family Western this film may be of interest to you.

Forgotten, but worth watching.
3 August 2008
This is not a classic film, but I found it very worthwhile to make the effort to find it and watch it.

The issues of wildlife conservation, specifically African elephant conservation, that it raises are still very relevant. The film seems at least 30 years ahead of its time in this respect, as we are still struggling to find ways for elephants and humans to co-exist. The conflicts between poachers, elephants, and well-meaning people trying to make the world better for humans AND elephants depicted here are playing out in the real world very much as depicted here.

John Huston made several timeless movies. While this is not one of his best movies, it is an interesting companion piece to "African Queen" and is thought-provoking about issues of wildlife conservation and the effects of colonialism on African and world politics.

Good adaptation, amazing cast, special effects that hold up 70+ years later
2 September 2007
This film seems very obscure given its production values and amazing cast - I only came across it while scanning Cary Grant's filmography. It seems mostly lost to time.

The film edits together both Alice books into a single narrative (such as it is; the plot remains very episodic). The special effects are still impressive. It made me wonder what the reaction of the public was to this film in 1933 - seems like it would be a major spectacle like the "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings" is to present generations.

Part of the fun is seeing major stars together in the same movie (Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, W.C. Fields) and being exposed to many other actors who may have been stars in their day and have disappeared from modern memory.
