My Fair Lady (1964)
No creativity on adaptation, almost good politically
The movie has a very slow path... The professor spends days and days trying to teach her with no sign of improvement, then, in a second, she can say one phrase and that's it, no progression is shown.
There's no indication along the store of any romantic interest between the protagonists. The only indication is when Higgins sings thatbhe doesn't need a wife, so it gets obvious that he will want one...
Is guess the hole pack may fit well in theatre, as a movie adaptation it could have been more dynamic and more real. There was just too much use os scenarios, indoors filming, artificial lights...
It is great how Elize stands by herself. She's the one who finds a way to achieve her wishes, she tries to find professor's help and pay him (as fair as she thinks it wold cost), she refuses to just sell herself into any convenient marriage (she sells flowers), her future mother in low supports her without discrimination for her origin...
Men, on the contrary, like her father, is someone with no consideration for her, only cares about his's own interests. Higgins is like that in his own way, with the exception of the little indication of carrying about someone else that even surprises his mother.
What happens in the end? Mr. Higgins "I'm the rich man and I can treat anyone the way I like" is rewarded for his spoiled behavior and the independent girl ends being asked to get his shoes and serve her lord.
The progressive approach towards women (the suffragettes appearing, the mother administrating the money, the maid putting her voice to be listened and defend Eliza, etc...) broke all expectations making the end of the film a great deception.
I was not cheering for Higgins just because he was the protagonist, he seems to have learned almost nothing but that he wanted that woman, point. For her, I was expecting her resurgence 3 years later, an entrepreneur, with her flower business, helping her community, making jobs... (it is valid also for the musical).
In Funny Girl has a different plot, but it shows how an amazing, a phenomenal, a great musical is perfectly done.
