Death Note: Desu nôto (2006)
a beautifully heartbreaking adaptation
I am a huge death note freak, and when my dad somehow managed to get me the boxset of this movie series for my birthday, i was thrilled.
The movie's plotline does vary at points from the plot of the original manga and anime (not that that's a bad thing), but, at the same time, i think it really captures the essence of each character, l especially. Having him "die" and come back, only to reveal his name in the death note, in his own handwriting, was even more emotionally shattering than his death in the anime, which i didn't think was even possible (i mean this in a good way, i prommy).
I would have given this movie ten stars if not for the soundtrack including red hot chili peppers. This isn't an actual criticism of anything about the movie, but honestly just indicates my distaste for the red hot chili peppers.
The Other Side of the Mountain (1975)
made me cry four times
"the other side of the mountain" is a devastating and heartfelt take on love, grief, and refusing to give up on life.
Although first-time viewers may be quick to dismiss this 1975 movie as a sports movie or a corny romantic drama, i found it incredibly moving, even more so because of its being based on a true story.
On a more technical note, i found the acting, as well as the selection and placement of music, in this film to be incredibly effective.
I would highly recommend "the other side" to anyone interested, although viewers should be aware of its themes of death, serious injury, and, in one scene in particular, hospitals.
