Death on the Nile (2022)
Absolutely Tedious
The sets are terrible, it's like community Am Dram. The CGI is dodgy. The performances are cringingly hammy - I can't decide if this is intentional or not- we're in odd territory when Russell Brand is the straight man with an understated and considered turn with no grinning at all.
It's very much a Sunday afternoon, on in the background when you're doing the ironing and folks are napping, kind of movie.
Desperately disappointing. It feels like you're at a mate's murder mystery party from '06 when everyone is full of Prosecco and is 'doing an accent' .
The good stuff is that scenes in the 1930s club give those of us with a love of that era something pretty to look at and seeing French & Saunders together again.
The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun (2021)
Glorious
If you're a fan of Wes Anderson you'll love this. If not, maybe it's not for you. The familiar faces are all present along with some new ones. Great performances. Stylistically it's just beautiful. Absolutely loved it. It's the right mix of quirk and artistry. Just a gorgeous looking movie with everything you'd expect from Anderson.
Last Night in Soho (2021)
Wanted to love it , was just ok
I didn't know a lot about the movie before I watched it, other than the cast, so I wasn't expecting the gear change. It's a great cast, some of whom feel a bit underused. There's a lot of flouncing about that feels very unnecessary.
The two female leads are truly excellent and it's great to see a movie taking this approach. Anya Taylor Joy I find mesmerising, she's other worldly. Thomasin McKenzie really delivers a gripping performance.
There's enough to hold your attention but when it gets a bit darker it's quite jarring.
It's worth a watch and I'm sure Edgar Wright fans will love it.
It looks great, the soundtrack is excellent and it's an interesting concept.
Inventing Anna (2022)
A Decent Watch
I think after the recent pile of con-person documentaries people are expecting a bit too much from this. It's made plain that liberties have been taken. It's a dramatisation.
I'd agreed with some reviews saying it's a bit slow, it is for my taste, also a bit laboured. The cast is decent. It looks great. Overall I'd say worth a watch. Be prepared for the accent - it's quite jarring. I've never heard actual Anna speak so I don't know if this is how she sounds but it is a lot to process and it can be quite annoying. As to what is real and what isn't - Google it if you want the facts, this is an entertainment piece. As with this genre , I'm always amazed at how far these people get and who they take on the ride with them. For me the character is totally unlikeable and it's hard to believe people fell for her so called charms, but honestly I think that says more about them then her, they wanted a piece of the 'fairytale'.
Requiem (2018)
Decent Thriller
I don't think any shows of this genre are breaking new ground, we all know and expect the usual tropes. It's well acted, solid cast, good story and great tension. It's a decent watch.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Ok, Worth A Look.
Great cast, great performances. If Mark Rylance doesn't get an Awards nod or several for his performance I'll eat hay with the donkeys. That said, there's still something missing with it, I felt like it's a decent satire but likes bite. It's an ok movie, not great, but definitely worth a look for Rylance alone. He brings a menacing stillness to his character that's just extraordinary to watch and you can't wait to see him steal every scene he's in.
Being the Ricardos (2021)
Enjoyable But Miscast
Nicole Kidman is a fine actor, but Lucille Ball she is not. It was a decent movie, I did enjoy it but it's missing a certain zing and I think it's the casting for Lucy. She's missing sass, of course 'Lucy' was character and separate from Lucille Ball but it's still lacking that bit of a spark I think we all expect from the character. That's said it's still a good performance from from
Kidman and all the cast, particularly Nina Arianda, she really is mesmerising. I'd be surprised if she's not nominated for awards for her turn as Ethel. I was underwhelmed with Bardem also but again, it's not his talent in question, it's the casting. It's worth a watch but does feel slightly like a missed opportunity with both leads. I'd be interested to see who else was in the frame.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Exceptional Movie
Absolutely outstanding. Great story, great cast, a few 'surprises' , truly a great movie. Fans will be delighted and if you've never ventured into this centre before it's still going to entertain you.
Bell Book and Candle (1958)
The Perfect Movie
Excellent cast, fun and funny.
Kim Novak is just out of this world sexy and it oozes from her, whilst Jimmy Stewart was a bit old for the part, he still does a good job and is the perfect foil for Novak.
The perfect Christmas movie.
Silent Night (2021)
Absolutely Loved It
This movie really is something different. Excellent cast, in particular the kid from Jo Jo Rabbit - Roman Griffith Davis - he is some talent for sure. It's dark as hell, wickedly funny, silly, thought provoking and poignant.
I can imagine that it's not for everyone, in our house though, we gave it a 10/10. It's not a long movie but it flew by, we were engrossed.
As I always say, give it a go, you can always switch it off if it's not for you.
A Boy Called Christmas (2021)
Instant Classic
What a lovely movie this is. I wasn't expecting much after reading some awful reviews but I disagree with those wholeheartedly. It's very sweet, it looks great, has an excellent cast and has all the elements that you want in a Christmas movie. It will definitely be on our yearly watch list.
The Loss Adjuster (2020)
Mixed bag.
The title is a bit off for the movie that it is. He's not a hitman pretending to be an insurance fella. He's a bit of wet blanket having a bad day.
The acting is ok. The directing is terrible. The story is absolutely all over the place but it's an ok festive watch. I like Luke Goss, I think he's an interesting actor who hasn't had much of a platform. This isn't going to catapult him into anything mainstream. I've seen better I've seen worse. I was surprised to see so many awful reviews. Give it a go, you can always switch it off. And Joan Collins-well national treasure that she is, worth it alone for that.
A Castle for Christmas (2021)
It is what it is. Christmas feel good nonsense.
Yes it's rubbish but in the best possible way. I don't think anyone involved thought it was anything but what it is. Christmas schmaltz. It's great to see Brooke Shields and Cary Elwes as leads but there ain't an awful lot of chemistry between them I felt. It's not the worst movie but it's not the best either. It's fluff for Sunday afternoon. We'll gloss over the obvious nonsense about reality being involved in any of it, locations, accents and such like. If you're expecting anything other than a Hallmark movie you might be disappointed. It's fun, it's silly and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
