Una película sobre parejas (2021)
Can you die from laughing?
This movie has one of the best comedy scenes I've ever seen. I laughed so hard that I almost ran out of air.
Natalia and Oriol are a couple of filmmakers who decide to make a documentary about couples who have the same job (that is, a film about couples like themselves). While filming the documentary, their insecurities begin to emerge, and they engage in several discussions. One of these discussions is about the order in which their names appear in the end credits. This is the scene that left me breathless.
The movie mocks the creation process, while also exploring power dynamics in relationships. It might sound like a lot, but you can enjoy the movie effortlessly.
In general, it is unpretentious and entertaining.
Licorice Pizza (2021)
As random as licorice pizza
A slow and nostalgic movie with a couple of funny moments. The randomness of it all was intriguing. I was left with the feeling that I missed the point...perhaps that is what happens when you watch something original.
I Want You Back (2022)
A simple movie with a predictable ending...nonetheless charming
While devising a plan to sabotage their exes, two people end up falling in love with each other. Even though this plot is not new or surprising, Jenny Slate is able to keep this movie interesting. I especially enjoyed her scene filling in for the protagonist of the school's musical.
West Side Story (2021)
Did Maria even care her brother died?
Amazing performances and beautiful cinematography. You should definitely watch this movie despite the poor character development. Love at first sight is one thing, but asking someone to run away with you after one date and forgiving that person for killing your brother is just unreasonable. Then again, you will forgive the unrealistic love story because the rest of it is so good.
The Last Duel (2021)
Slow movie...until the duel scene
For a story about a rape trial, I felt the three points of view structure worked pretty well. During the first chapter I was falling a bit asleep, but as the story moved on, and I got to see the different character perspectives, I started getting hooked. By the time I got to the duel scene I was wide awake and sweating my nerves out. The fighting seemed pretty realistic...I had to cover my eyes because it was too painful to watch.
Matthias et Maxime (2019)
Checks all the boxes of a Xavier Dolan film
As someone who has just finished watching all of Xavier Dolan´s films, I can say this movie has the same three characteristics as all (or most) of his other work: complicated relationships and identity as a theme, an awesome soundtrack, and dialogues where silences and what is left unsaid are just as important as words. This is good or bad, depending on whether you were expecting his work to have evolved after a decade.
