Redeeming Uncle Tom: The Josiah Henson Story (2019)
Must See TV
American history is complicated. It's stories can make an American citizen proud to discuss or ashamed to whisper. This documentary "Redeeming Uncle Tom: The Josiah Henson Story" to me is a mixture of both. It shows the evils that men do and at the same time the courage of and decency of people. The bitterness and evil of American slavery is described fully. The awakening and then courage of this American slave to find freedom from slavery is uplifting. The kindness and generosity of some Americans both Indian and white is heart warming. SOME people want to hide historical stories like this and whitewash the facts. That is why I say this documentary is 'Must See TV'. Because, after watching it, you the viewer will never forget it.
Manchild: The Schea Cotton Story (2016)
Open Question
Why wasn't he drafted? A decent documentary that doesn't clearly answer that basic question. Was it his reconstructed shoulder? His SAT score? An ability to score points but unable or unwilling to play defense? The documentary shows a young man who has good character. No drugs. No gangs. No crime problems. There were enough people who knew Cotton when he was growing up to speak about his exceptional size and
basketball talent. However, the constant college movement from school to school as a player indicates some type of problem.
This documentary should have met with knowledge people from the NBA who could have answered the question. Why wasn't he drafted?
The Color of Medicine: The Story of Homer G. Phillips Hospital (2018)
St. Louis, black history and medical care
That the filmmakers decided to make a film about this hospital is admirable. However, they should have spent less time discussing individual doctors and nurses and more time about the hospital and its effect on St. Louis politics, medical care, racism and the community.
How They Got Over (2018)
I'm going home on the morning train!
A time capsule documentary. When the people of the future ask what 20th century music was like this documentary will show them. When they ask where rock & roll, R&B, the blues, rap, pop, and jazz came from this documentary will show them. Gospel music shaped and formed the world's music. The Smithsonian museum should capture and bottle this documentary for our descendants to watch and learn.
Quincy (2018)
Annoying Documentary
Quincy Jones is a musical giant deservedly. He deserves a better documentary than this poorly structured film. Compare this documentary to "The Black Godfather" the Clarence Avant story, which is a great documentary about a man I knew nothing about to see the difference.
The Harder They Fall (2021)
My Brothers Keeper
A fun western. Something I don't get to say.too much
anymore. An enjoyable movie for two although the language can get salty at times. The characters are well defined and fun to watch. Get the popcorn, stretch out and enjoy.
Colin in Black and White (2021)
Like the white doll/black doll
Like the white doll/black doll described.in the show this dramas reviews seem to break down along racial lines. This atypical American story of a a white couple that adopts a mixed race child with no idea of how to raise him is wonderful. Colin tells the story of his growth as a young black man with intelligence and sensitivity. As for example, the fact that he grew up to become a three-sport star with a 4.0 GPA. Something both he and his parents can be proud of.
I suspect because he uses the word 'black' throughout the series, is why many of the reviewers dislike the show. To them and the ones who swore they would NEVER go to another NFL game, I say: "Thank you for the seats".
