Girls Nite Out (1982)
Have a good Nite Out, rather than a Nite In watching this CR*P!!!
I normally only comment on a movie if I enjoyed it immensely, and only have good things to say about it ! Sadly, this is the FIRST occasion where I have been SO UNIMPRESSED, that I have had to comment to say just how BAD it is !!! I am a huge fan of the 80's "flash n slash" movies. Bearing (no pun intended) in mind that this movie is "supposedly" part of this genre, it has ZERO flash, and virtually NO slash. I am a firm believer in "realistic gore" effects in these movies, as so superbly done by "the master" Mr Tom Savini (especially as so brilliantly done in "The Burning" and "The Prowler"). The effects in this film could have been done by a "brain-dead slug" with an old furry rag and a bottle of tomato ketchup. ***SPOILERS*** The death scenes are virtually all the same, and even that single method is VERY poorly executed (the "Benson bear" with razor-blades in his paws !). Take my advice and AVOID THIS MOVIE LIKE THE PLAGUE !!!!!!!!!!
From the Hip (1987)
Funniest and Cleverist Courtroom Drama
This is Bob Clark's cleverist and best film as a writer/director. The casting is superb (especially Judd Nelson and John Hurt), the story is incredibly clever in it's construction (I defy anyone to figure out the ending prior to the final scene !), the humour is very-well inter-woven into a very inticate, and challenging drama. The film really does expose the moral/ethical dilemas faced by a defence attourney, when faced with defending a particularly difficult and vicious murder case. I won't disclose too many details as it would ruin the film, but if you enjoy a thought-provoking yet very funny and hugely entertaining court-room drama..... then WATCH THIS FILM IMMEDIATELY !!!!!!!!!
Porky's (1981)
The best sex comedy ever made
Porkys was one of the very first sex comedies to hit the big screen. Many others followed it in a vain attempt to achieve the same level of originality, humour and success, but they all failed, most miserably ! More recently there has been a fairly successful revival of this genre, with the likes of American Pie (and it's sequel), and Road Trip. I still believe Porkys to be the best. The shower scene is an all time classic, preceeded by the famous "Lassie" scene, and followed by the hilarious "Penis Line-up" requested by Miss Ballbreaker ! Bob Clark is a tremendously talented writer/director, particularly when you consider his wide range of films, ranging from Horror to Comedy. Of his films that I have seen, I would particularly recommend Porkys, Turk 182, From the Hip, By Decree and Black Christmas.
The Rock (1996)
One of the BEST action movies ever made
This was the first Michael Bay movie I had the privilege of watching on the big screen, and it is still his best (closely following by Armageddon and Pearl Harbour). It has everything you could want from a big-budget action film :- Great story, excellent cast (Sean Connery, Ed Harris, Nic Cage, Michael Bein, David Morse), amazing action sequences, well-integrated comedy moments, and SUPERB direction. The battle scene in the shower-room on Alcatraz is one of the most touching and poignant battle scenes ever filmed, and leaves you close to tears (especially as Mr Harris "damns" the Government powers responsible for causing the slaughter of the heroic Navy Seal Crack Insertion Team). Two-and-a-quarter hours of pure entertainment and adrenalin !!!
Braveheart (1995)
The GREATEST FILM EVER MADE !!!!!!
Mel Gibson spent a good few years in getting this film made .... and it was COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED. Mr Gibson has always been one of my favorite actors, but his greatest success by far was in the production and direction of this SUPERB movie. Although the movie itself is almost 3 hours long, it is totally absorbing from beginning to end. I first saw this film as a special preview, and had to take the very last seat in the cinema, which of course was the worst possible one. The film was just so amazing that I didn't move a muscle for the entire film, even though I was sat at a very uncomfortable angle. The 3 hours seemed to fly by, so much so that I was late for an appointment, as I just hadn't realised how long the film was, and I never checked my watch once. Everything about this movie deserves the highest praise indeed, including Mr Gibson's Scottish accent. I have watched this film time and time again, and it never ceases to impress, or indeed move me, as certain scenes seem to provoke a tearful response at every viewing. Well done Mel, I don't believe ANY film will EVER surpass this MASTERPIECE !!!
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Great film
One of the best films of its type, only bettered by Frank Darabont's other period prison drama based on a Stephen King story "The Green Mile". Mr Darabont and Mr King appear to have hit on the perfect partnership, in making fantastic films based in prisons and set in days gone by. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins are both excellent in this movie, although Mr Freeman is always excellent (especially in his high school drama "Lean on me"). Well done to all concerned in this excellent production, and let's hope that Mr Darabont and Mr King continue in this successful vein for the future
The Burning (1981)
One of the best 80's "Slasher" films ever made !!!
Wot a great "slasher" flick ! It has ALL the ingredients required :- 1. "Psycho killer" with a grudge (and a vicious pair of shiny shears); 2. Camp FULL of "unsuspecting youths" in their late teens; 3. "Horny guys" hoping to get laid; 4. "Luscious girls" in need of a shower or a skinny-dip; 5. "Bad boy" picking on the "sad loser"; 6. "Handsome hero" ready to save the day; 7. Atmospheric music (by "Rick Wakeman") 8. FANTASTICLY REALISTIC horror effects (by "The Master - Tom Savini"). The basic story surrounds a Camp Caretaker called Cropsy. He is an ugly, evil so-and-so, who takes great pleasure in tormenting/scaring the young campers, by stalking them and sharpening his nice shiny shears (you know, the ones with the long, thin blades !). However, he pushes some of the lads TOO far, and they set out to get their revenge. Unfortunately, their prank goes wrong (heh, big surprise !), and poor ole Cropsy ends up a "BURNING" mass !!! 5 Years later, he is released from hospital, with the sound advice of .... "try not to blame anyone". Sadly he doesn't listen, and dusts off his shears to go "a-hunting" ! Through a series of violent killings, he slowly works his way through his batch of "fresh meat" (hack, slice, stab, cut, slit, and severe !!) The special horror effects by Mr Savini are incredibly gory and frighteningly realistic (especially when you consider that they were done in the early 80's). I haven't managed to see the full, uncut original version. Sadly the UK video version I saw back in the early 80's, already had 10-20 seconds removed. I have been told about the missing bits, and I would love to see the FULL version. Still, this IS probably THE BEST slasher flick of the 80's. Good story, interesting characters, believable acting, atmospheric music, GREAT special effects and solid direction. A special thanks to Tony Maylem for the story and direction. Tom Savini for the SUPERB effects. And Carolyn Houlihan for her great nude skinny-dip (and unfortunate exit from the movie). Oh, and you will also see very early film appearances from Fisher Stevens, Holly Hunter, and Jason Alexander. If you like classic slasher flicks (ie Friday 13th), then WATCH THIS FILM !!!
