The Tick (2016)
Show was getting better as it went
I was a big fan of the cartoon version, and even though I am a big Patrick Warburton fan, I didn't love the live action version he was in. This one is much closer to the cartoon in silliness and character interaction. In other words, YES. I really hope they're secretly planning to do another season. The show was getting funnier and more interesting in each episode. The character development and plot twists are funny and cool at the same time! The cast is awesome, and also was getting even better in season 2. I know the actors had other big projects going on, but I'm keeping my big blue fingers, and antennae, crossed that this somehow makes it back for at least one more season.
Central Intelligence (2016)
Could have been a lot funnier
I am a big fan of Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, and all the other big names that made appearances in this movie. However, they kept setting up situations that could have been really funny - but nothing happens. The joke just withers away. It was like they had a lot of funny jokes or situations in the script, but at the last minute the censors made them take out the punchlines. I did like the story, and there was even a bit of "who dunnit" suspense. The fact that they had a decent structure and great talent leaves me thinking that the writers were more interested in drama and action than comedy - but the movie was promoted as a comedy, and has several events and props that scream "COMEDY MOVIE." But when it came to being funny, for the most part it left me hanging. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart were still doing a top notch job delivering the material they had, but this movie could wait for home viewing.
One Night Stand: Larry Miller (1990)
One of the Best Stand-up Routines Ever
This show includes some of Larry Miller's classic bits, including working out, the difference between how men and women think about sex, and the five stages of drinking. There is also a short opening sequence with young Jerry Seinfeld before Larry takes the stage. A "must see" for anyone who likes stand-up comedy. A "should see" for everyone else.
There is no "foul language" in the routine, which personally would not bother this reviewer. However, every word Mr. Miller speaks is delivered with perfect timing and fits exactly with the mood of the whole routine. This show should be part of the textbook for beginning comedians. This is how it can be done. This is of course not the only great stand-up routine out there, but it is definitely one of them. This particular performance of this routine is arguably his best.
Looper (2012)
Fun if you don't think about it too hard
Take the most mundane parts of the Matrix, Timecop, Terminator, and Akira and blend them up to make Looper. The cast is great. The acting is great. The little boy was awesome. The story was only alright and oddly a little predictable, but I can't imagine how people are saying that there are no plot holes. The biggest for me is that if you have the ability to force someone into a machine that can bend time and space, why do you need some putz with a gun on the other side to shoot them? Why not just send them into space, or the center of the earth, or ... basically anywhere besides a field 30 years in the past where someone has to shoot them before they can run away? The machine itself would inherently have the ability to just zap them into nothingness. It's a little like if 70's gangsters would stuff people into an SR-71 Blackbird jet, and fly them at Mach 3 to New Zealand so some sheep farmer could chase them down and hit them on the head with a hammer. The setup was supposed to be that it's impossible to kill someone in the future-future, but then people are getting shot willy-nilly during the main character's later life. So we're supposed to believe that future gangsters have access to time machines, but the only way they can think to use them is to send people back into the past to be shot? That's just too stupid. Sorry. I would still recommend seeing it for the acting, but that's probably not high praise for a sci-fi action thriller.
Barnyard (2006)
Cows are FEMALE
How can you make an entire movie about cows with male voices? It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have those utters swinging around down there. Even my 5 year old noticed within the first 5 minutes of the movie. I don't expect cartoons to be ultra-accurate or anything, but come on! There was a bull in the movie too! What do they think bulls are, a different species? Do they think there are girl-bulls out there? Obviously, I didn't think the rest of the movie was good enough to make up for this universal, disturbing flaw. The art direction was pretty good, unless the art director was involved with the choice on the transsexual bovines.
