Extrapolations (2023)
Expecting much more
I am a believer in science and know where we are headed due to climate change. This show missed a major opportunity to speak about that coming threat in any way that could assist non-believers in understanding. In the first episode, for some reason that seems completely innocuous at the time, they choose to have a walrus kill a bad character that gets between it and it's baby.
The second episode continues in a similar fashion after somehow in the next couple of decades we learn to talk to whales directly. This will not happen. We are no closer now than we were 20 years ago in this science.
Someone should tell this story accurately. It matters. Immensely.
Secret Headquarters (2022)
Great movie for kids
To be frank, I do not understand all the negative reviews saying this is just for kids. It is for kids. One look at the image for this movie and that is fairly clear. This is not great. It does not have a deep meaningful message and does not have content meant for the parents that may be watching it with their children.
That being said, it is not horrible to watch as an adult (I did laugh out loud a couple of times), and it is almost guaranteed that your children will like it.
Moonfall (2022)
Bad enough to be a lot of fun
Ok, I freely admit that there are a ton of problems with this screenplay. Most of the science is just plain wrong, the effects they discuss would have way worse of an impact on the planet than they show, and the characters, aside from the male star, have no real depth or substance to them. But I really enjoyed this movie mostly because it was so bad. If you are someone that can take joy out of bad movies that have enough good that the contrast make them hilarious, this is for you. If you are someone that wants science fiction that is consistent in its science or simply its plot, this is one you should skip.
Infinite Storm (2022)
Not for climbers / backpackers
If you have any experience climbing or backpacking, this movie is not for you. It is obvious they have no knowledgeable actors or advisors on this film about a supposedly experienced climber. The star character makes numerous very basic mistakes in the first 20 minutes of this film and it gets worse after the actual storm starts. The terrain is not very difficult but it is treated like K2 or Everest and watching the carelessness they exhibit to stretch out the life-threatening situation for the duration of the film is painful.
I only gave it a three since the acting and filming is not bad. Other than that, this is a hard pass.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
Great Start...Awful finish
I really enjoyed the first 30 minutes of this movie. It develops good characters with a good reason to put them in the middle of a ghost town. But this quickly devolves into a chase em kill em horror without any good qualities. The end just reinforces this conclusion. For the beginning I rate this a 5, the end probably brings it closer to a 4.
The Tourist (2022)
Immediately drew me in
This is the best mini-series I have seen in a long time. A character driven series with each character interesting and facing individually challenging situations. It starts with the leading character being targeted in an attack that leaves him with amnesia. I do like how this draws the viewer in. It brings us along as he tries to find out who he is by investigating his recent history.
After doing this, it develops each character in a great way, showing their challenges and presenting each with a massive event that forces them into a change. Lots of characters in this series are protagonists. And on top of that there are a lot of laughs, sometimes coming out of the blue, but I never found the lines intrusive to the moment.
Great series. Highly recommended!
Foundation (2021)
Not Asimov
I wish this was more closely related to the books. This is obviously loosely based on the books, but in trying to encompass the massive scope the book covers, they invent something that in my opinion completely destroys the original intent of the stories. And the majority of the time of each episode is spent on the invention of the screenwriters, not Asimov's story.
The magic that Asimov injected into the books has been wiped clean unfortunately. I was really looking forward to this and will still watch it, but it is not what it could have been (should have been).
Well acted and great effects, which certainly helps.
