Senzo: Murder of a Soccer Star (2022)
Started good but dragged on with no actual ending
I totally get that not all cases have a satisfying conclusion but there certainly wasn't enough material to spread this over five episodes with no conclusion. Yeah, a lot of stuff happened but they just kept going over the same info repeatedly for most of the series or showed new clips of the same exact inference. Overall, I didn't hate it but I definitely wouldn't recommend. I would've preferred to either watch a 90ish min documentary or read an article.
Candyman (2021)
I'm not sure why it's got so many horrible reviews
To be up front, I hadn't seen the original before I watched this new reboot, although my husband had seen it. We both thought the reboot was pretty great. It was very interesting and well-paced with a lot of creepy scenes. Yes, it didn't have a ton of jump scares but those can be such a cheap crutch so I don't feel like that actually says anything about the integrity of the film. I'm a huge horror fan and, while I do love jump scares, I also appreciate movies that are super creepy and well done just as much. It might not be in my top 10 but I did genuinely like this movie.
After watching the actual original, I'm really confused about all of the hate when it comes to racial commentary. That seems like such a significant part of the plot for the original as well. All of these negative reviews are acting as if all the new movie does is throw racism and politics in your face nonstop but that's just not true. Just as it is with the original, race and society is a big part of the plot but not all defining.
I would definitely say this 2021 reboot is high quality and worth watching.
Solar Opposites (2020)
Just gave it a try
I'll admit off the bat that I'm a huge Rick & Morty fan but I don't think it's the TV gods' gift to man like some fans act. I started watching this show just desperate for new content during this pandemic like most people and had no clue Justin Roiland was involved initially. I really wanted to love this show but it just feels like the poor man's version of R&M. The character and joke style are almost exactly the same just not as funny. The product placement is just confusing to me because I find it hard to believe a Hulu show created by and starring Justin Roiland, in addition to a number of celebrities, would be so hard up for money to make this show.
I really wanted to love this once I found out who was involved but it just wasn't enjoyable to me.
The Skeleton Twins (2014)
I love this movie
I may be biased somehow but I just absolutely love this movie. It's definitely a dark indie comedy so not the constant happy comedy that may be expected with Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader but their chemistry is just undeniable. Everything about this and their performance playing twins reuniting under less than perfect circumstances is just so real and human that it's hard to not feel every emotion that they're portraying. This one is probably not for everyone expecting a straight SNL-type comedy but it genuinely feels like Bill and Kristen as their true selves hanging out in real life in between the strong structure of the story.
Crawlspace (2016)
Great for a small budget horror
This movie isn't full of top level talent or any sort of incredibly new premise, but, as an avid horror film watcher, this one really surprised and impressed me. It's been done before but there's just something about these types of premises that just freak me out. I typically give most horror movies a chance just purely out of a lack of quality films and my undying quest to find horror films that actually scare me. This definitely looked like a classic mediocre movie that would be enjoyable as long as you go in with an understanding that it won't be phenomenal -we all know the type. This movie really impressed me. Itreally held it's own in keeping the pace just slow enough to build the suspense but fast enough to keep me intrigued. I think the ending isn't really too unpredictable but creepy as hell nonetheless. I'm guessing fellow dedicated horror fans are the ones checking into this movie and it's reviews so I really would just recommend that you give it a shot. It's definitely an under-the-radar gem.
