Tenet (2020)
4/10
Really poor audio that ruins enjoyment of the movie.

Rather confusing movie which might be good however the really poor and annoying audio placement over important dialogue makes viewing this movie a disappointing venture.

Also the general audio volume for most of the movie is poor resulting in you having to increase the volume to hear what's happening and then being deafened with the annoying and misplaced soundtrack.

Downsizing (2017)
3/10
Not very stimulating
31 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
One of the worst films I have ever watched. It's a shame really as the cast was rather strong. The premise started well and it simply descended into a boring storyline which is quite depressing, for some reason most of the plot line surrounds the Vietnamese character and her time in prison.

Quite disappointed really.

First Man (2018)

What a disappointment.
9 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Oh my, where to start.

Great cast of actors based on real characters, a great story line based on history but a great let down in my view.

This could have been so much better. The main point that ruined this movie for e was the ridiculous sound effects.

I could imagine vibration very easily but rocket engine noise in the vacuum of space?

A really annoying upwards scale type of noise when scenes of supposed excitement occur.

Just these two items stopped me from my enjoying the film. Perfectly good premise but badly written and with terrible sound effects.

I normally really like science / space based movies such as this but in this instance it was such a let down.

I gave it 3 out of 10.....

A movie that goes from bad at the beginning to worse at the end.
22 April 2010
When I viewed this title I thought to have such a line up of actors such as George Clooney, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey the movie had to be extremely good.

In my view the only funny parts of the film involved two events both including Clooney' character. I have to say I was extremely disappointed, if this is the type of title we can expect from Messrs Clooney, Bridges and Spacey I don't think I'll bother to watch any more from them.

The plot was poor, even though allegedly based on a true event, the acting was poor and to have such a very good line up of actors, I can only think this was for reasons of very clever publicity.

There was one funny thing attached to this movie though and that was the reviews given by the national newspapers and media in the UK, some had the audacity to give it four or five stars and to even call it 'Uprorious fun'. All I can say is that they must know of another meaning of the word fun that I don't.

Boot Polish (1954)
10/10
A story of love, heartache, destitution and restoration.
6 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Boot Polish is an excellent movie. I watched it around 10 years ago late at night just for something to pass time, before I realised I was totally captivated.

The film is well written, the acting very good. At times you feel very involved with the central characters, especially where brother and sister are split up.

As soon as I realised this movie had been released on DVD I purchased it, I became so involved in it I didn't even realise I was reading English subtitles.

Since watching this movie I have been a convert to Hindi films, the whole structure of these films is set to entertain the viewer which is something most new films do not think of.

Empire State (1987)
10/10
Violence, Intrigue, Drama. All set in a part of London that no longer exists!
18 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The cast of this movie is wide ranging, Martin Landau, Sadie Frost, Jamie Foreman, The late great Ray McAnally.

It is set around London during the 1980's and centres around two themes. Martin Landau's character and a London nightclub owned by Ray McAnally, 'Empire State', a place where they have nightly bare knuckle and kick boxing fights sometimes to the death of the contenders.

The movie is violent, murderous and seedy, Lee Drysdale plays a brilliant part as a rent boy who tries to act as a middleman and make a deal happen between a character called Richard Wellington-Horn-Ryder (what a mouthful) and Martin Landau who is an American property developer interested in investment in the Docklands.

It's packed with action, intrigue, drama and heartache, the scene with Jamie Foreman in the garage is fantastic acting considering it was only his fourth movie apart from his TV work.

High stakes are bid on fights, houses, cars, yachts, etc by yuppies wanting to make more money off the backs of contenders willing to kill one another.

I certainly give it a 10 on my all time favourite movie listing.

This movie really should be released to DVD. (Hint, Hint).....

Max Headroom (1985 TV Movie)
10/10
Fanstastic movie
2 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Why this movie has never been put to DVD is beyond me. A wonderful cast of actors, Matt Frewer, Morgan Shepherd, Hilary Tindall, Paul Spurrier, Amanda Pays, Paul Spurrier and George Rossi.

Matt Frewer and Amanda Pays are TV reporters who find out that a corporate TV company that controls what people watch run by Ben Chevio (Constantine Gregory) is developing a new type of advert - a Blipvert - to entice people to buy goods, unfortunately it has some unexpected side effects, Max Headroom (Matt Frewer) is created following a slight accident whilst trying to get away from Paul Spurrier and George Rossi (Breugal and Mahler - body part dealers who have been retained by its designer, Byrce Lynch (Paul Spurrier) to dissuade people from finding out about the project.

Whilst escaping on a motorbike Frewer hits a closing -car parking barrier (remotely closed by Bryce) and suffers head injuries, Frewer' personality is taken from his brain by Byrce Lynch and made into a computer generated TV icon as a pet project.

Blank Reg (Morgan Shepherd) and Dominique (Hilary Tindall) owners of BIGTIME TV find the computer containing Max by accident and decide - when they power it up and see Max, to broadcast him as a presenter on their network.

Theora Jones (Amanda Pays) then attempts to regain the personality to put back into Frewers head after rescuing him from the body bank.

There's a lot more to it but overall an excellent movie, if the powers that be don't release this to DVD they themselves should receive a visit from Breugal and Mahler themselves.

Sin City (2005)
10/10
Very well thought out movie
2 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Sin City is a rather strange movie, you start watching it and whilst doing so you seem to think it isn't up to much, then a little piece comes along and you think to yourself I'd better watch a little bit more.

When the end comes it hits you just how good a movie it is. I have to admit until this film was released I hadn't heard of Frank Miller. I hear that he has two Sin City sequels planned, if they are as good as Sin City 1 I can't wait.

The characters lives are all intertwined so that the way in which the story comes to life is fantastic. Quentin Tarantino having a role in its making as special guest director does not surprise me. I'd like to know how much of an influence he had with Miller as it seemed to me that you could see his direction and mannerisms in every part of the movie.

The primary character is Marv (Mickey Rourke), for some reason this guy does not know when to give up; this is one of his traits in the movie that endears you to him. He's a typical bad looking guy with a big heart who deals with his enemies with equally big fists. He also seems to have a penchant for jackets.

From what I can make out the secondary and tertiary characters are Police Detective Hartigan (Bruce Willis) and Dwight (Clive Owen), Willis is typical Willis and did not do anything for me. Clive Owen on the other hand with his menacingly calm way of dealing with people in the movie again was a treat.

Jessica Alba is given billing ahead of Clive Owen in the credits however I can't think why given her short but without exception, excellent appearance.

From start to finish the action grabs you, that it is mainly shot in black and white certainly added to my enjoyment of the movie. Elijah Wood plays a character called Kevin, his purpose in the movie is quite strange, he seems to be a kind of hybrid apathetic killing machine, I never did quite find out what he was, human, robot, whatever? The late Rutger Hauer has a small but central part in the story as Cardinal Roark, the family of this name seems to run everything in Sin City and its environs. There are many other first rate actors, too many to mention.

It's one of those movies that don't look much until you've watched it, having watched it many times since I would definitely recommend it.

The infamous Mastercard commercial
14 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is the infamous MasterCard commercial that was made essentially - I believe - for viewing on the net concerning the cost of a night out.

A boyfriend and girlfriend have just returned to her home from a night out; the boyfriend sees her to the door and asks her for a sexual favour.

The woman refuses saying that if they were caught her father might not like it and possibly react angrily, (if you see what I mean) anyhow this goes on for a little while.

Suddenly the porch light goes on and the woman's younger sister opens the door; she says Dad says go ahead and do it, or I can do it or if need be he'll come down and do it, but for Gods sake tell him to take his hand off the intercom... Cue the embarrassed faces.

There are many MasterCard commercials on the net, some blatant fakes some real.

The Simpson's version with Homer thinking of himself as he always does is a prime example, the difference being the end is two donuts merging into the MasterCard symbol.

Whether this was a spoof or not it really was well thought out and choreographed.

Funny isn't the word
11 June 2004
This film is full of many wonderful characters from the mainstream 50's British cinematic comedy era. The film centres on the criminal gangs of London being double crossed in their criminal activities by a bunch of foreign criminal gang members who impersonate Metropolitan Police Officers.

They turn up at the scene of the crime and then disappear with the stolen goods leaving the criminals in limbo waiting to be arrested by the real police.

Arthur Mullard, Peter Sellers, Lionel Jeffries, Bernard Cribbens and many more make this a gem of a title to watch. Some of the film was produced around Teddington, South West London, the scene of the mass arrest at the railroad level crossing was filmed in a Teddington street called Fairfax Road.

The crossing was taken out of use many years ago but the building on which Peter Sellers and his cohorts sat observing the proceedings is still in place adjacent to the point where the crossing was.

The area where the Jaguar car driven by Mullard screams over the bridge is the railway road bridge at Strawberry Hill (not far from Teddington).

I humbly give this film 9 out of 10, but then maybe I'm biased as I just love old British comedies such as this. Produced by Romulus Films and distributed by British Lion Films, what could be better?

Runaway Car (1997 TV Movie)

Garbage
4 March 2004
How this piece of garbage was put to film is beyond me. The only actor who is at all known to me is Judge Reinhold, an accomplished actor whose presence is merely a justification for putting it into production.

I don't even think it is worth a nomination for a rotten tomato award, this film really does make B movies a cinematic enjoyment. A car travelling along the freeway with police in tow, and no one knows how to stop the car, yeah, right.

The script must have been written on the back of a cigarette carton. Most made for TV movies are awful but this redefines the word. Check out the acting skills of the bridge operator, pure Oscar material.

A must see for anyone interested in the gritty historic fabric that was London in the sixties.
5 July 2002
A thought provoking and funny (at times) documentary. James Mason makes the narration of the documentary all the better.

In this production you see facets of London life long since forgotten. Street markets and their entertainers, residential slums, you witness the toughness of what it is to be homeless in a time where financial aid was not available as easily as it is today.

The scene of the egg breaking plant was strange at first but it does show the strange sense of humour that people had in this decade. The vibrant mix of people that occupy London is shown fully in the short fifty three minutes.

It can be rather sad at times to see people at their lowest but gratifying to see some of those people trying to make their lives a little better in any way they can.

James Mason makes a valid comment on the new buildings sprouting in and around London and makes the point that the demolition of old buildings is something that should not be mourned as the same fate awaits the new buildings in years to come.

I think in this he meant to say that change is inevitable and can be for the good sometimes. Overall I think the production was excellent, I give it ten out of ten.
