Panchayat (2020)
Panchayat -CDRA (Comedy Drama Romantic Action)
"Panchayat" is a web series from Amazon Prime that masterfully blends comedy with an authentic portrayal of village life. In the first season, the series humorously navigates various aspects of rural existence, from rumors about a ghostly tree to village politics, the local economic system, the village hospital, and the deep bonds among the villagers. Central to the narrative is the growing connection between the village secretary, Sachiv Ji, a city boy, and the warm-hearted villagers.
Season two shifts focus to the complexities of village politics and the evolving relationship between the Gram Panchayat Pradhan's daughter and Sachiv Ji. The season also introduces a poignant subplot involving a soldier, the son of the Up-Pradhan, who sacrificed his life for the country.
By the third season, "Panchayat" transitions seamlessly from its comedic roots to a more action-packed storyline. It delves into the dynamics of village election politics, contrasting a patriotic party with one driven by a thirst for power. This shift adds depth to the series, enriching its narrative with new layers of drama and action while maintaining its inherent charm.
"Panchayat" remains my favorite web series of all time. Kudos to TVF for creating such a delightful and engaging show!
No Smoking (2007)
Making mistake Regret Punishment
There's no doubt in my mind that Anurag Kashyap is poised to become the next big thing in Bollywood. He's arguably the finest Indian director since the legendary Satyajit Ray. Despite initial skepticism surrounding his controversial debut with "Paanch" and "Black Friday," Kashyap delivers a masterpiece with "No Smoking."
"No Smoking" defies convention-it's not aimed at mainstream success, as most viewers would likely find it baffling and tedious. Yet, it stands as one of the most profound addiction narratives in Indian cinema. The film delves deep into the concept that every addiction stems from the soul's consciousness, requiring purification for liberation. Through the protagonist, K, played by John Abraham, we navigate a complex journey of moral discernment and self-realization. The treatment administered by Guruji, portrayed by Paresh Rawal, is entirely psychological, aimed at cleansing the soul rather than emotional manipulation. The surreal sequences and symbolic imagery throughout the film underscore its allegorical nature, culminating in a profound revelation for K as he confronts his inner demons and achieves spiritual redemption. The missing fingers, a seemingly torturous aspect of the treatment, symbolize the relinquishing of addiction, completing the soul's journey to purity. "No Smoking" is not just a film; it's a profound exploration of the human psyche and the quest for transcendence.
Personal Assistant (1959)
Personal Assistant : A Bengali Cinematic Gem of Romance and Comedy
"Personal Assistant" stands out as a remarkable Bengali film, showcasing a blend of romance, comedy, and charming music. Set in the vintage era of Bengali cinema, where films relied more on captivating stories and talented character actors than on star power, this 1959 classic delivers an entertaining and delightful cinematic experience. Led by the incomparable Bhanu Banerjee, the film captivates audiences with its endearing characters, subtle humor, and engaging storyline.
Bhanu Banerjee's portrayal of Ramapada Gupta, a free-spirited dreamer seeking employment, is nothing short of masterful. With deft comedic timing and a touch of romance, Banerjee effortlessly navigates the complexities of his character, winning the hearts of viewers with his charismatic performance. Supported by a stellar cast including Tulsi Chakraborty and Tarun Kumar, Banerjee brings to life a rollicking romantic comedy that continues to enchant audiences decades later.
At the heart of the story lies Ramapada's journey as he lands a job as a personal assistant to Rubani Sen, the stern and efficient managing director of Gargi Trading Company, portrayed by the talented Ruma Guhathakurta. As Ramapada navigates the challenges of his new role, including mistaken identity and romantic entanglements, the film unfolds with humor, wit, and genuine warmth.
One of the film's highlights is its portrayal of gender dynamics and romantic misunderstandings. Rubani's initial skepticism towards Ramapada, mistaken for a woman due to his name, evolves into a complex romantic tension as she discovers his endearing qualities. Ruma Guhathakurta's performance as Rubani is nuanced and compelling, capturing the character's strength and vulnerability with finesse.
Tulsi Chakraborty's portrayal of the eccentric publisher adds another layer of humor to the narrative, as he unwittingly becomes entangled in Ramapada's romantic pursuits. His comedic timing and expressive performance bring a delightful energy to the screen, earning him well-deserved praise from audiences.
Throughout the film, director X showcases a keen eye for storytelling, weaving together elements of comedy, romance, and drama with skillful precision. The screenplay, penned with wit and charm, keeps viewers engaged from start to finish, while the music adds an extra layer of nostalgia and emotion to the narrative.
In summary, "Personal Assistant" is a timeless classic that continues to charm audiences with its endearing characters, witty humor, and heartfelt romance. Led by the incomparable Bhanu Banerjee and supported by a talented ensemble cast, the film stands as a testament to the golden era of Bengali cinema, where storytelling reigned supreme. Whether you're a fan of classic cinema or simply in search of a heartwarming tale, "Personal Assistant" is sure to leave you smiling and entertained.
Sam Bahadur (2023)
Sam The Bahadur
"Sam Bahadur" offers a compelling glimpse into the life of India's first Field Marshal, Sam Manekshaw, a legendary figure who served the Indian army for over four decades and played pivotal roles in five wars. Vicky Kaushal's portrayal of Sam is nothing short of mesmerizing, echoing his stellar performance in "Uri: The Surgical Strike." His dedication and charisma shine through once again, as he seamlessly embodies the nuances and mannerisms of Brigadier Sam. Sanya Malhotra delivers a commendable performance as Sam's wife, devoid of unnecessary romanticization. While Fatima Sana Shaikh's portrayal of Indira Gandhi is visually striking, it falls short of capturing the strong persona of the former Prime Minister. The movie is punctuated with memorable dialogues, including a poignant Gurubani recited by Sam, reflecting the valor of a warrior. Scenes such as Sam asserting security protocol and introducing a lieutenant to a politician add depth to the narrative. Meghna Gulzar and her team deserve accolades for shedding light on the contributions of a military strategist often overlooked in mainstream culture. The movie's soul-stirring soundtrack complements its narrative beautifully. In conclusion, "Sam Bahadur" is a heartfelt tribute to India's beloved soldier, offering a compelling cinematic experience that fills viewers with pride. Highly recommended for its authenticity, "Sam Bahadur" is a must-watch for all."
Galpa Holeo Satyi (1966)
Dhananjay: Unraveling the Tapestry of Family and Philosophy
One of the finest cinematic gems in the Bengali language, this movie stands as a testament to the essence of family dynamics in mid-20th century urban Bengal. Set against the backdrop of a society yet untouched by the ultraleftist movement, it offers a poignant portrayal of the intricate fabric of familial relationships. Unofficially considered the first installment of Tapan Sinha's revered 'Calcutta trilogy', alongside 'Aponjon' and 'Ekhoni', it captivates audiences with its unique storyline and enchanting background music-both trademarks of Tapanbabu's cinematic brilliance.
However, beyond its captivating narrative lies the true allure of this masterpiece-the natural and captivating performances by every actor, male and female alike. Each character breathes life into the screen with their impeccable portrayal, while the flawless screenplay keeps viewers engaged till the credits roll. Amidst the layers of storytelling, a subtle yet profound supernatural and philosophical theme weaves its way, adding depth and intrigue to the narrative.
In the realm of 'movies on Calcutta' from that era, this stands out as a singular creation, blending humor and philosophy seamlessly. Among the nine films crafted by the esteemed trio of Mrinal Sen, Satyajit Ray, and Tapan Sinha, this movie emerges as a unique gem, offering a refreshing take on the genre.
In conclusion, as the timeless wisdom of Dhananjay resonates within each of us, this movie serves as a gentle reminder to seek and nurture the essence of goodness within, for the betterment of humanity. Truly, it is a cinematic masterpiece that transcends time and leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of its viewers.
Aynabaji (2016)
A kemon Aynabji !
An Exceptional Crime Thriller in Bengali Cinema
Encountering Aynabazi in 2020 was a cinematic delight. It marked my introduction to crime thrillers on the big screen, an experience unmatched when revisited on TV. While a detailed analysis could have been penned, I refrain from unveiling spoilers.
I firmly believe that one's core competencies pave the way for survival in this challenging world. Hence, nurturing our skills becomes imperative, irrespective of circumstances.
Sharafat Karim Ayna (Chanchal Chowdhury) inhabits a modest room in an antiquated house in Old Dhaka, running a small acting school for children. Aspiring to be an actor, fate leads him down a different path. Ayna possesses exceptional skills in method acting, seamlessly transforming into any character. His immersion into each role is so profound that he becomes the character in reality. Ayna befriends Hridi (Nabila), whose compassionate heart is moved by Ayna's struggles and his altruistic contribution to the children. Despite Ayna's extraordinary talent, it becomes a tool for the corrupt to manipulate laws and public perception. To survive in this unforgiving city, Ayna compromises his ethical stance. Crime reporter Saber (Partha Barua) shadows Ayna, unraveling the connections between him and the city's dark underbelly.
Chanchal's acting is unparalleled, surpassing even his remarkable performance in Monpura (2009). If showcased on a global stage like Hollywood, his talent would undoubtedly garner widespread acclaim and awards. It's disheartening that he remains a Bangladeshi actor, with limited opportunities to unleash his true potential. Partha Barua, a renowned singer in Bangladesh, delivers an impressive performance despite limited screen time. Nabila, too, shines in her role.
Despite being part of a smaller film industry, the storyteller Gousul Alam and director Amitabh Reza Chowdhury could achieve greater recognition on a Hollywood scale. As a fan of crime thrillers, I anticipate more gripping narratives from Gousul Alam. Amitabh Reza, a well-known figure in the media, showcases his directorial prowess in this debut.
The film's music resonates, with "Dhire Dhire Jao Na Shomoy" by Habib Wahid and Anweshaa leaving a lasting impression. The rooftop scene featuring Nabila overlooking the Buriganga River is captivating, becoming an instant sensation among Bangladeshis. Notably, the song's scene was shot on private property, not suitable for personal photography.
Aynabazi's success is affirmed by its recognition at the Bangladesh National Film Awards 2016, securing seven accolades, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound Recording, and Best Costume Design.
Animal (2023)
ANIMAL: An Artistic Expedition of Feelings, Genius, and Melodic Enchantment
Animal offers a gripping cinematic voyage, adeptly merging captivating guidance, formidable performances, and an energizing soundtrack. The initial section stands as a supreme demonstration in storytelling, with filmmaker Sandeep Reddy intertwining a fabric of emotions and tension. Ranbir Kapoor and Anil Kapoor shine, signaling a noteworthy return for Ranbir. Their on-screen chemistry deepens the storyline.
Nevertheless, the latter part of the film loses momentum with a more leisurely pace, leaving the audience longing for the vigor of the opening scenes. Bobby Deol's restricted screen time misses an opportunity, as his presence might have enriched the storyline. Despite this, the exceptional performances enhance the film, especially Ranbir Kapoor's impactful portrayal.
Rashmika Mandanna falls marginally below expectations, allowing space for improvement in her character portrayal. Shakti Kapoor, an experienced actor, could have had a more significant role to exhibit his talent.
The music stands out as a striking feature, with Ajay-Atul's compositions crafting a captivating ambiance before the interval. B Praak's song during a pivotal fight sequence is a stroke of brilliance, displaying innovation in the film's soundtrack. Amit Roy's cinematography and Sundeep Reddy Vanga's editing substantially contribute to the film's overall allure.
Extending over 201 minutes, the intricate storyline unravels with layers of familial dynamics, affection, deceit, and retribution. The post-credits scene lays the groundwork for potential sequels, adding an extra element of fascination for observant viewers.
In conclusion, Beast offers a cinematic expedition worth witnessing despite its imperfections. The outstanding direction, remarkable performances, and unforgettable music make it a compelling addition to Indian cinema.
Mujib: The Making of Nation (2023)
Mujib": A Cinematic Masterpiece by Shubo and Benegal
"Mujib" has transitioned into a feature film instead of a documentary. Two aspects left a strong impression on me:
1. Arifin Shubo.
2. Cinematography.
Arifin's performance in this movie was commendable; he bet his good life on it. Witnessing this, Shuvo reminded me of an incident involving India's Aamir Khan. As Aamir Khan delves deep into a film, he begins to think about it even more than the director. Similarly, Shuvo perhaps had the grandest dream for this film, and why not? He constitutes 90% of the entire movie, and the film revolves around him.
Shuvo contributed to this movie for a mere token fee of 1 taka. It's evident that he held 'Mujib' close to his heart throughout the film. This performance stands as the pinnacle of Shuvo's career. In my opinion, this movie is worth watching solely for his remarkable performance.
The cinematography's specialty lies in the fact that most shots are single takes or long takes. I have some knowledge about film production, and I've noticed that Shyam Benegal often captures scenes in a single take, akin to a stage play. Even when a shot requires a change of angle or cuts within the same scene, he starts from the beginning, maintaining his unique style. However, a simple solution would have been to use multiple cameras.
Some of the shots truly surprised me; the camera movements and framing were exceptionally well done. Considering the director is 86 years old, expectations weren't high, but he honestly did not disappoint. He adapted the film to suit modern times.
I encourage every Bengali to watch this film!

Jailer (2023)
"Jailer (Hindi) Review" ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Right from the beginning, "Jailer" declares its intentions boldly: it's an unapologetic action extravaganza. Rajnikanth, in his signature style, brings his larger-than-life presence to the screen, ensuring there's never a dull moment. The opening scenes had me wondering if I was in for déjà vu from Vikram, but just as I thought I had the movie figured out, it executed a genre switch that left me both impressed and intrigued.
As the first half unfolds, the film establishes itself as a revenge saga, and Rajnikanth bulldozes through his adversaries with finesse. However, the real surprise comes in the second half when "Jailer" takes a daring leap into the heist genre. This unexpected pivot not only keeps the narrative fresh but also showcases the film's willingness to break its own boundaries.
One of the film's strengths lies in its well-timed and star-studded cameos. These appearances are sprinkled throughout the movie, and even amid electrifying action sequences, they manage to leave their mark. This clever distribution of cameos helps maintain the film's energetic pace while adding extra layers of excitement and intrigue.
The music of "Jailer" complements the relentless action perfectly. The beats and melodies sync seamlessly with the adrenaline-pumping sequences, enhancing the overall impact. Kudos to the director for maintaining a cohesive flow despite the shifts in tone and genre.
Speaking of direction, it's worth noting that the pacing is a standout feature. There's no room for unnecessary padding or melodrama here. The narrative propels forward with an urgency that matches the breakneck speed of the action. Rajnikanth's acting prowess is undeniable, and he effortlessly navigates through both the ferocious action scenes and the moments of emotional resonance.
I had the chance to watch the Hindi-dubbed version of the film, and I must say, the dubbing and Hindi dialogues added an extra layer of amusement. They managed to capture the essence of the actors while injecting a touch of humor into the proceedings. It's a testament to the effort put into localizing the film.
In conclusion, "Jailer" is a cinematic rollercoaster that demands to be experienced on the big screen. With Rajnikanth at the helm, the movie delivers on its promise of non-stop action while defying expectations by seamlessly transitioning into a heist narrative. The clever use of cameos, along with a captivating musical score, adds to the film's allure.
I wholeheartedly recommend "Jailer" as a must-watch for action enthusiasts and Rajnikanth fans alike. This is a movie designed for the theater experience, where the pounding of fists and the heartbeats of the audience can synchronize in a symphony of excitement. Strap in because "Jailer" takes you on a thrilling ride that you won't want to miss.
