House of the Dead (2003)
THE worst movie I've ever had the displeasure of seeing
Even after seeing hundreds of horror movies since I was first allowed to watch them in the early 70's, I have never seen a movie as bad as this one. Not only is the plot a rehash of every other horror movie - although it was claimed to be based on the very popular video game - but the directing and editing of this piece of dreg are what drive this movie to an average rating of around 2 (I'm actually surprised it's that high.) The interlacing of video game zombie shots, the almost never-ending fight sequence in the cemetery, the "Matrix" effects, and so on, also put this movie way, way over the edge. I actually greatly enjoy those "so-bad-they're-good" movies, but this is by far no where near that level. Luckily, I had rented this waste of media instead of buying it because I would have used it to pick up my dog's sh!t out in the back yard. 'Nough said about this crappy movie!
Hand of Death (1962)
Rehash of the typical 60's horror movies
*** WARNINING: SPOILER ***
I hadn't seen this movie before, much less heard of it, until Fox Movies channel started showing it. I'm a big fan of the 60's B-movie scene and this movie didn't surprise me nor show me anything new. But it was, nonetheless, enjoyable despite the very dark print and crazy music.
It's taken the typical storyline from that era - man messes with nature and creates a monster. In this case, government scientist Alex Marsh (John Agar), is creating a nerve gas and is exposed to it which converts him into a black, bloated mass of burned flesh with the touch that kills. In his insanity, he looks for a cure from other scientist friends but leaves a trail of accidental deaths behind him (he does intentionally kill one cab driver, though!)
Since I hadn't seen this movie before, I found myself thinking that maybe he would be cured and no charges would be filed - hey, it's a sci-fi/horror flick from the 60's! At one point, I was even thinking the ocean water would cure him but alas, there is no cure but a single shot from a police gun as he was lunging to attack.
Running less than an hour, I do have to say, it did keep me watching and was a nice appetizer. You have to remember that these kinds of movies from the 60's didn't usually last more than an hour. The acting was wooden and Agar, the little of it he had to do, was not as impressive as he was in "Revenge of the Creature" and "Tarantula". I thought that the guest appearance of Joe Besser (Three Stooges fame) as the gas station attendant was the most memorable with his comical one liners like "It doesn't pay to get out of bed sometimes". Another good, but expected scene, was the little boy on the beach (who happens to be Butch Patrick of the Munsters fame) encountering the "blob".
Overall, this movie is okay if you don't mind the short, typical, 60's B-movie. Would I buy it on DVD if released? Probably, but I wouldn't spend over $10 for it.
As a side note, if anyone with cable or satellite that gets the Fox Movies channel should Favorite it as they have been showing some really great movies.
Brimstone (1998)
A great show that should of had been given more of a chance
I think that if they wouldn't have stated that there were 113 episodes (113 evil spirits escaped underneath the Devils "nose" to be recovered by said character), I think this show would have had a bigger following and probably a longer lifespan.
Don't get me wrong ... I loved the show but it fell onto it's own sword. Glover (John) and Horton (Peter) were GREAT in their roles and the show had a great concept but both could not save this show's hari-kiri (sp?) Maybe if they would have said 13 "evil spirits escaped the grasp of the Devil's reach"... it could have been realisitic for a virgin show (at least for it's time.)
I've grown to like these kinds of shows and have been "rewarded" with their cancellations. No wonder I can't get a job at Warner Brothers. Thank God for USA Networks who are willing to rerun these shows and allow us simpletons the entertainment we desire.
Any fans of these actors or the show concepts, will really enjoy this. If you happen upon it during your late nite fast-forwardins of you remote, stop by at this little bit of "heaven".

Dog Soldiers (2002)
Finally, someone makes a great horror movie! A flick to look out for!
I had heard about this movie through Fangoria and was thrilled to see it on the Sci-Fi Channel. Being a real horror movie fan, I haven't been too keen on the latest batch of horror movies to hit the screen in the past 10 years. Oh, there have been a few but they were far and in-between "great"...until I saw this movie.
From the very onset through to the climactic ending, I was clenching the armrest of my recliner. The action was top notch and non-stop, the special fx were awesome for what they worked with, the characters were real, and the gore was awesome. Even the werewolves looked and acted 'real'. I was actually surprised that the 'Channel' deleted the cuss words but allowed the bloody gore. (Hmmm, good for them and us!)
A particular point that I liked was the realism of the characters; they were soldiers and the actors portraying them seemed to have a bit of real army training; their tactics were sound and their human reactions were how I, or probably anyone, would act in those harrowing situations.
I would highly recommend this flick for any true horror or action movie fan's DVD/video library. I can't wait until it comes out on DVD so I can see if anything was deleted (were scenes deleted to fit the time slot) as well as all of the other extras. If you don't believe me, read the rest of the comments.
Enjoy!
