¿Eres tú, papá? (2018)
A brooding, nuanced film which realistically depicts sorrow, isolation, and the employment of black magick as a source of real power in the face of desperation and oppression
A relentless and disturbing psychological horror involving spellwork and black magic (which is mostly implied and understated, rendering a chilling effect, once the viewer recognizes what's occurring), along with themes of family, isolation, fanaticism, trauma, and mental illness.
The plot had similarities with the excellent Irish folk horror, Wakewood.
It's a chilling film.
It will appeal to those who *appreciate* subtlety and nuance over explicit gore and jump scares, as it depends upon the viewer possessing a sophistication and an appreciation of an atmospheric and oppressive supernatural dread that is always present from the first scene.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (2022)
A real mess- but, at least it's got My Favorite Mutiny
This is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen: constant cut-aways that break the 4th wall, with actors addressing the camera, bad/overacting, John C. Reilly has absolutely no range- every movie he's in, he's still Dale, and you *hear* Dale when he speaks. "Magic Johnson" is Magic Johnson from Wish- too skinny and doesn't look like Magic Johnson, facially- which is distracting. The only good thing about this mess is the show's opening intro song- My Favorite Mutiny, by The Coup- which is the balls. That's some good shidd right there.
