Jutro bedzie niebo (2001)
Another warm story about life
A coincidence (or fate) puts together a lonely, beaten by life 40 old man and 12 year girl on journey filed with magic. Nice music if one likes acid jazz. It's only an impression, still worth watching. Very good acting.
Polskie drogi (1976)
German occupation of Poland in WWII
Polskie drogi means Polish road, but can also be translated as polish fates. The series starts in september 1939, during the German invasion of Poland. It shows different reactions of polish people to this and to the later occupation. Some are resisting, some try to accomodate, some try to live as if nothing happened. The series is good, the music is very good. The main theme is one of the best I've ever heard.
Wiedzmin (2001)
Avoid the film look for the book
a very mediocre film based on a superb series of stories and novels. I hope Somebody, someday will be able to film it the right way. In the meantime, look for the books (by A. Sapkowski), a very inteligent, postmodern fantasy. By now there should be a translation in english, there translations in german for sure.
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
A film that stays in your mind
I saw this film once, some 25 years ago as a child. I didn't remember the title, or the cast, but I remembered the feeling. For years it stayed somewhere tucked away in my mind, resurfacing only sometimes in my dreams. Then a few days ago I was browsing throuh some e-library. I saw the title: Charlie and the chocolate factory. A bell rang. I searched further through internet to find some notes about the book. I found, they sounded familiar. So came here to look for the movie. Imagine my surprise as I found out it was in the process of making, due in 2004/2005. Well, I am not crazy, and I never did show powers to see the future, so... it obviously was a remake. Then how could the title be for the original? I found it. Well, now imagine, what kind of a movie it must be to make a 30 years old geezer look frantically for it at the first sign it might be the film he saw so many years ago...
Sól ziemi czarnej (1970)
Piece of Silezian history
The story of the first or second silezian uprise. After WW I, arises the dispute between Germany and the freshly resurrected Poland about to whom should belong Silezia, a rich, industrial region. The inhabitants are divided between those who consider themselves Polish, German and Silezian. The first start an armed revolt, the German authorities are fighting it with success. Told from the Polish point of view. A masterpiece by K.Kutz, the most "silezian" from the polish directors. A good film, about a very disputed piece of land in the heart of central Europe.
Hydrozagadka (1971)
Very good, though probably hard to understand for somebody outside the former east-block
It was supposed to be a parody of an american super-hero story, it became a parody on the life in Poland in the sixties. Today a cult-film among polish viewers. Sadly it is probably not easy to understand for somebody without knowledge about life in the former east-block, so don't try it if it is your first polish comedy to watch.
Gwiezdny pyl (1982)
small spoilers
Two people getting old together. The mystery of life. Hard to say more without spoiling, but it is a very warm film about men and women, small but important things of life. Sometimes funny, sometimes nostalgic. A typical film of Kondratiuk. Almost no action. A slow flow of time.
Ziemia obiecana (1975)
Masterpiece of polish cinema
By many (including me) seen as the best polish movie ever made. A perfect picture of 19 century industrialization with its bright and dark sides. The main characters: polish, german and jewish represent the three societies living in the industrial city of Lodz. every society with its own ways and peculiarities. Funny, tragic, colorful. A must see.
Baza ludzi umarwych (1959)
A sad, beautiful film (small spoiler)
Some say it is a polish version of "Salaire de la peur", only instead of explosives you have.....(spoiler)..... trees. Forgotten place, forgotten people in the middle of nowhere. Sure, you have here some communist propaganda, nevertheless one of the best polish movies ever.
