Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
You've seen it all before
Not sure what Snyder is celebrating, the fact that because people who have already paid for Netflix watch this because it's the Christmas holiday and the hype and also to see if it's as bad as people say doesn't make it "the number one movie". And yes, it is as bad as people say.
It rips off everything from Midsummer (Scandi sex cults) to Avatar, Harry Potter, Dune, Blade Runner, The Chronicles of Riddick, Warhammer 40K, Battlefield Earth, and obviously Star Wars which it desperately wants to be but fails at, mainly because IT'S NOT FUN! It's incomprehensible, the plot so thin it's barely water, and the characters utterly forgettable.
If there's a longer cut coming, what's the point of this? Would anyone want to sit through MORE of this just to ascertain that yes, it's still bad.
People will keep watching this and it will look like a smash but if it had been a cinema release it would have been a historical flop.
Reservation Dogs: Maximus (2023)
Bear's journey
Felt I had to write a review to balance out the one negative review on this episode. The episode deals with Bear meeting someone else who is another guide to him on his journey, in the excellent Graham Greene. Greene's portrayal is moving and so full of depth, even in a series that has had some very touching portrayals. In a way it reminds me of the episode with Willy Jack and her dad, just taking a breather and letting the characters grow.
The episode does have a few really good laughs, as always, but it's the emotional heft of it that makes the show what it is. One of the best episodes in my opinion, to which you're allowed to disagree, but this is exactly why I love this show so much.
Halo (2022)
Actually quite good
I've never played Halo, so I'm completely unaware of the "lore" of Halo. I wasn't sure what to expect from this series but gave it a shot. I can understand if "fans" feel their expectations haven't been met, especially if they expected basically a live action shooter. That wouldn't make much of a series though.
Three episodes in I'm finding that this is actually a really good sci-fi series. It's hardcore military space opera stuff, like John Scalzi. Aliens, artifacts, super soldiers, politics, rebellions, it's all there.
People have complained that the dialogue is wooden. It's science fiction, not Downton Abbey. You can't sound anything but wooden spouting stuff about alien artifacts.
The production design is excellent. It definitely looks great, even better then The Expanse. And Pablo Schreiber is great as Master Chief. Not only does he have the physical presence for it, he does a good job even without the helmet on.
I felt it needed a review from someone who has no experience of the game, but knows sci-fi. I definitely think it's worth giving it a shot even if you've never played the game, and for the players, give it a chance.
