I found this relatively obscure movie recently and was was pleasantly surprised. Its a somewhat strange film in that there is little traditional aspects of an ordinary film- the pace is slow and there isn't much of a "climax" so to speak. That said it is still well worth the watch. The film follows two 12 year old Norwegian girls in the 1930s and explores their relationship. It is very touchy and emotional in its simplicity and the soundtrack that accompanies it was perfectly chosen. There is minimal dialogue but the two main actress's do an excellent portraying these young, somewhat lost, girls. One thing that caught me off guard however the amount of underage nudity shown. I know it was filmed in the 1980's in Europe however what is shown onscreen is rather jarring in its explicitness. Both of the main actress's strip fully naked in multiple scenes and their entire anatomy, upper and lower, is shown frontally and in closeup. This may be unnerving for some viewers so just be aware. Overall however the film is excellent and worth viewing.

Controversial film that lives up to the book.

Like some others have mentioned here, this movie is based on Arnon Grunberg's book by the same name. The film, like the book features very mature and controversial topics and is certainly not for the faint of heart. Without giving too much away, the movie follows a Dutch man who has lost his job and is in mental decline; his daughter Tirza goes missing in Namibia and he embarks on a journey to find her. The acting is spot on and all the main actors give an award worthy performance. The movie itself is slow paced but very gripping at the same time. In terms of content, this film features violent and disturbing scenes as well as explicit and often uncomfortable nudity. One controversial scene from the book depicts the main characters young teen daughter Ibi lifting her skirt up to reveal to her father that is isn't wearing panties. For some reason the director of the film decided that this unnecessary scene needed to be shown fully on screen. Making matters worse, Ibi is portrayed Abbey Hoes, who was only 15 at the time of filming and exposes her privates on screen. Scenes like this are exploitive and unnecessary in my opinion and is the reason I give the film an 8 instead of a 10. If you can stomach the uncomfortable content of the film, I would recommend it for its excellent acting and accurate adaption from its source material.
