Terror on the Prairie (2022)
An incredibly dull western
Lemme just say, I love that Daily Wire is getting into entertainment. I've been a subscriber for over a year, and I'm not leaving any time soon. However, this movie is not good.
I'll start with a few positives. The movie looks pretty good, and I think the decision to go with no score was a good one. There are some exciting moments, but overall, the movie really failed to excite me.
Now the bad. The characters here are so paper thin, that I find it hard to really care how things turn out for them. The arcs are so generic and predictable, that they might as well not even be there. The villain is very cliché, riding around spitting intimidating Bible verses and scalping people. However, he is probably the best thing in the movie.
The acting is competent, but fails to sell me on anything deeper than surface level emotions like fear or anger. The plot drags on for way too long, considering the fact that nothing really happens. On top of this, Spoiler Alert (though not really), we are treated to another feel-good ending where everything turns out perfectly for the characters without having to sacrifice anything, which is so frustrating.
Watching this movie made me realize the pattern that is forming with DailyWire movies. They all follow "strong, independent" female characters who either have to rescue the men who are incompetent, or defeat the men who are evil. If I want the feminist messaging, I can go to Hollywood, they have plenty of that. This is supposed to be DailyWire, a company that stands for traditional values and against the wokeness of Hollywood.
If it were one or two movies from them, I wouldn't have a problem. Hell, movies like Alien that follow strong female protagonists are some of my favorites of all time. I just want some variety from DW, especially in an era where masculine man are increasingly rarer and under attack.
We are four movies in with DailyWire and they are yet to make a movie that is particularly interesting. Shut In is still the high water mark for them, but even that was only ok. So yeah, strong 4/10, not good.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Good time on steroids + cocaine
The Safdie brothers perfect the style that they pulled off so well in Good Time, to stunning effect here. It's hard to recommend this movie that is
1. Super anxiety enducing,
2. So filthy that I feel like I need a shower after it ends
3. Has an incredibly unlikeable protagonist.
But Uncut Gems is a crazy exploration of addiction through the eyes of a gambler, and it is so well made, I can't help but admire it.
The Squid and the Whale (2005)
A hard movie to watch about family dysfunction
I don't know whether to be impressed by the raw and realistic display of moral rot, or just be disgusted by it... or both.
There are a lot of issues here. This movie somehow manages to make 80 minutes feel like an eternity, while also flying through plot points so quickly that the characters often don't get moments to breathe. The movie also plays very broad and obvious beats at times, and leaves no room for subtlety. And wtf is that ending!!!
However, I do have to give the movie some credit for having a few really great moments, plus having the ability to make me so uncomfortable. Maybe it's just because family dysfunction hits close to home for me.
I don't know, 6/10.
Midsommar (2019)
Tedious and pretentious
How did Ari Aster go from directing the greatest horror movie of the 2010s to making this? Simple, he believed his own hype.
It's obvious from watching this movie that the man behind it believes he is a genius, and expects us to bask in his glory as this boring story with characters I don't care about SLOOOOOOWLY plays out. There is like 80 minutes of material here that are stretched out to almost 2 and a half hours.
This movie is not scary or unsettling. The characters' relationships are poorly explored and often end abruptly before they can play out in any interesting way. The only compliment that I can give the movie is that it is visually intriguing, but that's about it.
Strong 4/10: not very good.
It Comes at Night (2017)
Deeply unsettling movie with a bad title
I think it's time we all just get past the fact that nothing comes at night, and just appreciate this movie for what it is. This is one of the darkest, most depressing, and most psychologically upsetting movies out there. I don't scare easily, but this movie really got to me. Excellent horror film.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
Hilarious
This is the definition of "so bad that it's good". Watch it for a good laugh.
The Babadook (2014)
A masterclass in metaphorical filmmaking, and a great horror movie
I usually don't when movies try to be allegorical or metaphorical, since they usually end up just being heavy handed and shallow. The Babadook is different though. It took until the end of the movie for me to realize how deep the subtext went. For most of the movie I was instead wrapped up in the chilling story of two characters being tormented by a monster, and the tension growing between this poor grieving mother and her son.
The acting in this movie is outstanding, Essie Davis deserves an award, and I can't believe how good one-time actor Noah Wiseman is here for his age.
The cinematography complements the movie's decent into madness, to the point that I was starting to forget which was up and which was down.
Every scare is brilliantly effective and surprisingly fresh.
This is one of the first movies that started the trend of "elevated horror" this decade, and it's easy to see why. After a decade of movies like it, it still stands as one of the best.
Great movie, strong 8/10.
Låt den rätte komma in (2008)
Best vampire movie of all time?
Let the Right One In is a stunning and criminally underrated gem. Not only is it a great horror movie, it is an exceptional love story, and an emotional experience you won't forget. I'll keep pining for this movie till people start appreciating it. Go see it.
1BR (2019)
Tense, unsettling thriller
This trim, taut thriller was surprisingly good, and left me a little unsettled when it ended.
Police Academy (1984)
Unfunny
I hate this movie. It is beyond my comprehension that people find it funny and entertaining. I don't get the joke.
