Hereditary (2018)
Doesn't live up to the hype
I recently watched this movie and was just left scratching my head over all of the "scariest movie this decade" type hype. It's not that I didn't think the movie had any good attributes. Some of the acting was very good and the setting was generally creepy. The plot had some potential as well. But it wasn't scary. At best, there were some creepy moments. Nothing that had me on the edge of my seat though. Nothing jarring. The characters started to get on my nerves after a while, perhaps because the movie was overly vague and slow at times. The only one I was left with any sympathy towards the end for was Peter, and mostly just because he had to put up with everyone else. But What really made me dislike the movie was the end. It explains everything and yet still leaves you with a WTF feeling. It goes as far as to undo the creep factor of the entire rest of the movie. It's comically UNscary and poorly executed. To be honest, a really climatic ending might have saved this movie. They blew it.
Unrest (2006)
Put a rest to this movie
I'm sorry to say that this movie was illogical and not at all scary.
The story line of a cadaver that is still trying to take its revenge might actually have been interesting. But it wasn't and I'm not even sure that was the story line here. There was some door slamming and things turning off by themselves typical of the paranormal genre and then some unexplained deaths that never made any sense. And then the weird sort of African tribal music or something that would pop up throughout the film....sometimes at points where nothing was really happening. There was talk of human sacrifices and possessions that really weren't explained. It was almost as if the creators were like, "ok, what are some things that are scary? Demon possession? Human sacrifices? OK, let's just throw that in here somewhere to scare things up a bit. Oh and let's make a few doors slam and some lights flicker while we are at it. And better get some actors and actresses That look pretty good with very few clothes on to distract people from the fact that this film just really sucks."
Poor acting, poorly executed story line and no scares= a total yawn fest.
We Are Still Here (2015)
I wish they weren't still here.
I watched this movie after reading the positive reviews and, in the end, felt like I must have watched a totally different movie than those reviewers. To start with, I felt like there was too much of the back story that was missing which left me wondering what the hell the characters were talking about at times.
In addition, I can't think of one point where I felt any fear or suspense. Maybe that was because I was irked trying to figure out what the back story was and trying to put all of the pieces together.
The acting was just...bad. I never felt a connection to any single character or even the sometimes "hurry up and kill this annoying character, ghost!" that you sometimes get with this genre. I just didn't care about them one way or the other.
It's too bad because when I read what it was about, it sounded like it had a lot of potential, but that potential never turned into anything. I wasn't scared, I wasn't creeped out...I just wasn't interested at all.
Hooked Up (2013)
Terrible, terrible, terrible!
I could not even finish this film, and I've sat through some pretty bad ones.
Within about the first two minutes, i was already sick of the two guys involved and was hoping some ghost would pop in and kill them right then and just put the film out of its misery! Unfortunately, that did not occur.
Granted, there are quite a few bad movies out there in the "found footage" genre, but I can say without hesitation that I was mad at myself for even trying to watch some of this movie. Those are minutes I can never get back and felt annoyed at how wasted they were.
This is just a movie that I'd put in the "never should have been made" genre.
Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time like I did. I mean I'm an Amazon prime member so it was free to watch, but I felt like giving it one star was too generous. If zero were an option, that would be about right.
