Mediocre and way too many loose ends!
16 September 2002
Warning: Spoilers
It seems to me that Shyamalan cannot make up his mind whether he wants this film to be a horror movie, a suspense thriller, or a Sci-Fi flick, as it has elements of all three, but unfortunately fails at all three!

***************************************** *********** SPOILERS AHEAD ************* *****************************************

The movie does have it's moments, and is not terrible as some viewers have indicated, but there are so many unexplained circumstances and loose ends that it left me feeling very empty.

First of all, I think it's a total cop-out that Shyamalan never really explains why these aliens are here, but only gives you possible reasons so that you have to guess for yourself - now that's poor movie making!

The second thing that struck me as totally implausible is that these aliens have the superior technology to come all the way to the Earth, hide their ships with a "shield" technology, and yet have no sophisticated weapons of any kind with which to fight us!!

The next problem, which to me makes no sense whatsoever, except for Shyamalan to be able to make this movie continue, is the fact that Mel Gibson's character and his family stay in a totally isolated area right near one of the crop markings when he knows that by doing so he is potentially putting himself and his whole family in mortal danger! Uh Duh, maybe if we leave and go to an urban area we can get some help!?

The final item however truly takes the cake. We supposedly have a very superior, sophisticated alien race (who by the way never heard of clothes), who has some kind of deadly reaction to water, yet they come to a planet that's about 70% water!!! I guess their technology was unable to determine that the Earth not only has massive oceans, lakes and waterways, but has a simple thing called RAIN!!!

I'm sorry, but this totally blew this movie for me, and as I liked both The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, I have just one piece of advice for Shyamalan, please stick to those type of films and for the sake of true Sci-Fi fans like myself, do not attempt any more Sci-Fi flicks, it's not your bag.

Mind-numbingly boring!

Simply put, this movie not only lacked any entertainment value, but left me practically catatonic with disbelief that a movie could start off poorly, languish through the heart of the movie, and end as badly as it began. Avoid at all costs - 1 out of 10 stars.

Wonderfully enjoyable movie - entertaining & engaging
24 August 2002
After viewing a number of the previously written reviews of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" I was relatively confident that I would enjoy the movie, but being somewhat of a cynic and having been burned by an IMDB rating before ( The Royal Tenenbaums is rated 7.9, but I thought it was one of the worst, least entertaining movies I've ever seen!!), I was still not convinced.

Well needless to say, this time the IMDB rating was almost right on ( it is currently posted as 8.1, but my vote would be an 8.5). This movie was simply enjoyable and entertaining right from the get go, and I am not exaggerating when I say this is the most I've laughed in the movies in years!

If you enjoy ethnic humor and a truly nice story that will touch your heart, then go see and enjoy this movie.

Sooo bad I was actually in PAIN!!!

Looking at some of the other reviews for this movie I can only come to the conclusion that these folks must have been watching a different movie, because I can't imagine anyone truly believing that this movie was anything but atrocious!!

The plot was moronic and totally unbelievable, even by silly comedy movie standards. There were perhaps 2 or 3 scenes that were marginally funny, but for the major part (and when I say major I mean 99% of the movie), it was so bad as to be virtually unviewable!

I think what spoke volumes about the quality of this movie was the fact that there were exactly 8 people, that's right 8, at a 7:50PM showing on a Friday night at a very popular theater. It appears the word has gotten out.

Good light viewing

CD in LA is not a classic, but doesn't aspire to be, and if you're simply looking for a fun, light-hearted comedy, then this is the movie for you.

The plot is relatively simplistic and predictable, but there are more than enough funny scenes and enjoyable characters to counter that. If you enjoyed the first 2 CD movies, than you'll probably enjoy this.

Note: I actually wanted to give this move 6.5, but there is no way to do that, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt and gave it a 7.
