The Death of Stalin (2017)
Superb.
Like Ianucci? Find yourself singing 'Springtime for Hitler and Germany' while cleaning the toilet? Love a bit of Partridge? Is Dr Strangelove your gynaecologist? Then I fully recommend this film. Darkly hilarious with obvious parallels to The Thick of It - the absurdity of politics, the sycophancy, the narcissism... the film shouldn't really be seen as an historic account, more a vision of what that small moment in Russian political life, was like. Obviously based on facts, Ianucci's imagining and interpretations of the machinations around these events, is superb, distilling the horrifying into the absurd.
Trolls World Tour (2020)
Why the bad scores?
It's a kids movie and my kids and I enjoyed it. Job done. People getting precious about rock music need to grow up.
Elf (2003)
Good film but with problems...
My kids like this film and that is all that really matters but, and American films can suffer like this, there are issues.
1. Why oh why do kids films think it is ok to cast any doubt on the existence of Santa. Why even go there?
2. The angry wee fella in the boardroom faces Elf up, after taking offence, by spouting materialistic nonsense about owning three houses etc, and telling Elf that he's had 'more action' than Elf, before beating him up. Inappropriate on several levels.
Would have scored higher but for the addition of the incongruous drivel.
Point Break (1991)
Predictable 'by numbers' FBI flick
New recruit, angry FBI boss, older partner stuck with green horn chase bank robbers. You've seen all of this before, even to the end where Reeves throws his police badge away. Cheesetastic however it is not taxing and doesn't require any brain power to watch. Enjoyable on a dumb level.
Look Back in Anger (1959)
Bleak, angry, period domestic abuse flick.
Burton overacts and the dialogue is not that of a normal person but that of considered script. It doesn't ring true. Jimmy is just abusive to his wife, his friend and her friend. Through a modem lens, few would put up with him. Is this an insight into post war Britain? I don't know but I can imagine an angry post war generation. Maybe this notion makes the film more compelling and bleak.
Playmobil: The Movie (2019)
It's a kids movie and my kids thought it was great...
What do people expect? Fine art, original themes? It's a lot of fun and worth watching with your kids. I gave it a good rating as my kids enjoyed it and it kept me engaged. A bit of humour and some silliness, everyone was happy watching.
The Great Gatsby (2013)
Good film, terrible score
What were they thinking with the music? Such a shame. Great movie otherwise but contemporary rap in a movie set in the 1920's!! Big Baz needs to give his head a wobble.
Shark Tale (2004)
This movie is Terrible
It's a kids movie about gangsters, a protection racket, a moribund hip hop culture character that is interested in girls and money who fights back against the gangsters (sharks) and the outcasting of a shark that lives an alternative culture. My kids are 7,5 & 3 and have no idea of these topics. It's a very poor adult movie done in cartoon form. Avoid
