Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Sorry, but not sorry.
So, here were go. Disney just had to go and do it. Take something that was already written, and fail at creating their own NEW Star Wars Universe.
What I mean by this is, most of you know there was already over 40 years of post ROTJ(Return of the Jedi) stories told in books. Part of the Star Wars Extended Universe, there was a super compelling continuation of Luke, Han, Leia, Jedi/Sith, The Force, etc, that was super epic.
Disney had a real chance to do some magic. I think with the films/TV shows they have done that are still in the original canon, they did a great job. All they had to do was film it and put it out there.
But with the stuff they are replacing the EU with, Disney just came right in a took a dump all over that.
Lucas did do some strange work with the prequels, but at least they were still canon.
The last Jedi is so full of WTF moments. Especially what they did to Luke, and how they justified it. It would have made more sense and far more accepting if the movie had been about Luke restarting the Jedi academy and seeing his star pupil fall to the dark side. Loosing his way, and goign into hiding. That is kind of important dont you think? We are talking about Luke Skywalker. Disney just crapped on the legacy of Star Wars with this mess.
The crazy crazy.... Dat ship battle chase premise? In Space once you have forward momentum, you could turn off your engine and just continue moving forward. In this movie, when the fuel(that is a whole nother wtf) runs out, the ships list over, haha. Did you even see that and think it was cool? There was no tractor beam, the ship just stops in space and lists over.
Is Leia a jedi master too? Or the intergalactic Mary poppins? Can't even go there right now.
I can't take kylo ren serious at all. When he first appeared in that other travesty, I thought abotu Grandmas Boy( i am a robot). That was the end of kylo ren being considered a legit darksider.
Rey could have really been a cool character, but there is just no sensible protagonist arch there. It is totally ridiculous nonsense.
The fight scene with kylo and Rey. This was just mindless filler. A dark sider of kylo rens power should have been able to force attack those guards at will. Fight over in seconds.
I didnt mention snoke(is that right? it just doesnt seem evil). I mean that was a hot mess what happened. That is a can of worms for real.
And that kid at the end, oh we never seen a slave kid with force sensitivity right? If anything, that kid should have been in the Force Awakens.
I got to stop dwelling on this.
The Titan (2018)
Not as bad as people are claiming
I've seen some terrible movies, but I don't think this one goes on that list. People sure are ripping it up. Mostly it seems due to it following a storyline that has been done often. I would really like to know which movies some of the people that gave this a 1 out of ten thought were good. Seems sci fi movies get slammed really hard.
There were some moments in this that I was like wtf? But luckily they didn't dwell on it too long.
Just remember, these are straight to Netflix movies. I'm glad to get new stuff to watch.
Anyways.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Was this a bad fan film?
OK, so I went to see it again. This time in 2d. Much better viewing and much better audience. After seeing this once and writing the review below I went back and read a few things, then went to watch again. STill have some issues with some parts but was much more enjoyable in 2d. Ready for the next one so the story can really begin.
(original review) I am a pretty die hard Star Wars fan, read over 100 Star Wars books. Going into the Force Awakens I had a lot of new hope that it would be better than the last offerings. From the opening scroll I had a bad feeling welling up inside me. After the first scene completed I felt very confused. I thought to myself "Am I watching a fan film? Is this the twilight zone? What the heck is going on? Why am I not in awe?" I then realized that I was seeing a remake of something that DID have a ton of awe. Seeing something watered down the second time is not awe inspiring. From here it went downhill. So many plot holes and "Whisky Tango Foxtrot moments". For instance Ray barely being able to lift the Falcon off the ground then flying it better than Han Solo with no co pilot. That is just a major hole. Fen wielding a light saber with the skill of a Jedi? Come on man Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! WHY WHY WHY? Now let's have a brief discussion on Kylo Ren. That characters arc is a steaming bit of mess. At first I was like OK, Sith focus, anger, maliciousness. Then the temper tantrums and the grand unmasking. At that point I knew the Force Awakens was going to be a real snooze fest. Nothing was awakened except doing exactly what was done before. They had one chance the redeem the movie when the big fight in the forest with Ren, Fen and Ray. Instead of the Saber being force pulled to Ray, this is where Luke should have made his appearance. And intercepted the saber. The audience would have went absolutely ape shizzle and this movie would have been the best of all time. But of course sadly we were given a repeat script where non Jedi Fen wields a saber like a Jedi Padawan, even though he is not even force sensitive. Ray who just discovered the Force fights like a Jedi Knight. Last thing, a major character died, even though there was no body, why was there no ceremony to celebrate the life of one of the greatest heroes in the galaxy? This is why this movie felt like a bad fan film, rather than a major studio production. I have not been this confused and disappointed in a movie ever. Even the crazy prequels took a while to realize the mess they were. I couldn't even make it through the first scene before that feeling overwhelmed me.
Extinction (2015)
Terrible
Spoiler alerts! Geez, what is going on with these new so called zombie movies? First it was Maggie, and now Extinction. Terrible movie making. It seems that they may be afraid to be compared to TWD, so they do this weird thing that just does not work. There were so many plot holes and inconsistencies in this movie. For instance, they were in this house for 9 years? The main guy has a radio and been broadcasting everyday, yet people living safe only 50 miles away suddenly decide to contact them. And yet in 9 years they did not travel more than 50 miles to explore their surroundings? This is all I am going to say about this mess. I can't think about this mess anymore.
After Earth (2013)
After Earth - Decent Sci Fi
Alright here we go.
I just went to see After Earth. After hearing so many bad reviews, and people saying the movie sucked, I still thought I would give it a chance. Most people, I believe do not seem to like Sci Fi unless it is super action packed with tons of one liners, explosions and flashy heroes. What makes a good sci fi flick of this style work, is a protagonist story arc. This comes from where you have a character that is not perfect, but needs to come into their own. This movie achieved that. Simple straight forward character arc. What is wrong with that? I even heard people say this movie had no story at all. Are they so blind not to see a simple father son tale of pain and growth? Now believe me when I say, I absolutely hate M Knight Shamalambdalambdalamda or whatever his name is, but I was surprised that this movie actually stuck to such a simple yet effective plot. Where you have the great general who usually saves the day, out of commission, and his unsure son to grow and save the day. This not a movie I could watch multiple times of course, but I really did enjoy it for what it was.
Hope my review was fair and not too biased. peace love and hair grease.
Red Dawn (2012)
Red Dawn: You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll kiss you 10 bucks goodbye!
I always wonder who approves these kind of movie ideas? This movie was more annoying then anything I have seen in a very long time, and I felt the urge to walk out numerous times. I did my best not to compare this to the original, and kept an open mind as much as I could. However, this movie lacks real tension and emotion. The opening invasion scenes were very promising, but it went sadly downhill from there. The story arc of Matt Eckert was awful. There were absolutely zero plot twists, the most surprising part was when Jed was killed. But who shot him? I mean come on, the star of the movie gets killed by a "loud bang" out of nowhere, it's like the producers were making this up as they went. There was never a feeling of a big "show down" brewing, no climax. No character repertoire, just a big sterile, loud, jerky camera waste of time. I feel a remake of a classic film should be a homage to that original film. Otherwise, what use is it? Is this what the younger generation likes in action movies these days? I sure hope not.
Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
This movie Kills!! RE: Retribution FTW!!
First, I'm no reviewer, but this movie delivered. So I just wanted to say a few things about it. I don't play the games, so I don't suffer from the hate people seem to have of Resident Evil movies. This movie is the best of the series in my opinion. Though none of these movies have a really in depth protagonist arc per say, I still enjoy them. The other RE movies were hit or miss with lack luster plots and kind of lame scenes. RE: Retribution on the other hand surpasses them, mainly because of its simple yet effective plot. RE: Retribution seriously brought the madness this time around, from the beginning to the very ending... a mad house! This movie is what it is, and that is good! Saw this at AMC Imax in Austin just a few minutes ago, it was effing nuts! Can't wait for the next.
