La casa de papel (2017)
Edgy, emotional roller coaster thriller
Superb series, filled with passion, portrayed by powerful characters and performances throughout the entire series. No let up - the drama keeps evolving piling on the suspense and tragedies.
We binge-watched this story in one week, thoroughly captivated by the plot, but more so by the powerful emotive characters' stories intertwined seamlessly from start to finish.
Great cast of actors, who are so believable in their roles, we fell in love with all of them, even the villains.
Well written, on the fly, by a talented team, and directed by a genius! Cinematography superb as too the editing, lighting costume and set design.
This series is surely a masterpiece of cinematic magic!
Berlín (2023)
Crime and Romance does mix!
Superb visual storytelling, witty script, gorgeous cinematography & slick editing with believable performances by a charismatic characters. This film hits all the marks for adrenaline pumping fun and entertainment.
A crime gang romance that serves up delightful twists and left turns that create tension & laughs simultaneously all the way the suggestive epilogue.
Awesome performances by gorgeous actors transfixed my imagination to their worlds of passion & love.
Slick editing, great directing and cinematography backed by a rousing soundtrack makes Berlin an binge-worthy tale of passion. Loved it!
The Lost City (2022)
The lost city
A reasonable cast with Brad Pitt, Channing Tatum, and Sandra Bullock, and supported by Daniel Radcliffe and a promise of an adventurous romcom between 2 hunky males rescuing the attractive female. However, the romantic chemistry and comedy was surely killed off when Pitt's character was brutal shoot and ended leaving the romcom? In the awkward hands of Channing & Radcliffe & Bullock.
And to be brutally honest compared to Pitt's character's golden locks and sexual allure, those other male characters struggling to be evil or funny or loveable, were always going to be 'second prizes'. For example, arguably the best comic line and spark of chemistry in the film was when Bullock's character asks Pitt's character - 'why are you so handsome?', which Pitt replies with his deadpan comic style and demure smile , 'my father was a weather man'. That comic moment was brilliantly played, and indicated the film had witty comedic content. So I was excited and settled in my armchair with a bag chocolate bullets and red wine for a funny film.
Unfortunately, moments later to my shock and horror-Pitt's character is brutally killed off, and leaves the story, and the Brad Pitt fans (like this film goer- traumatised). So sadly, from this dubious plot point I continued to watch disappointingly but the chemistry and comedy with Pitt's character gone, seemed dead too. I hoped Pitt's character would return and reignite the story's chemistry with his renown glamor and style but unfortunately he never rose from the dead and neither in IMHO, did this film. And so I crippling my remote, I skipped through the scenes trying to find Pitt's character's resurrection to give me a reason to hang-in and see this film through. But I soon realised the story for my liking had died in the first ten minutes or so.
Machos Alfa (2022)
Enjoyable Lighthearted comedy
The story follows the lives of four quirky male characters who all have their peculiarities that get them into trouble with the opposite sex.
The series is high-quality film making, with excellent visual storytelling. The performances are strong and the characterisations believable.
Great editing holds the series together along with good cinematography.
At times the dialogue was fast and reading the subtitles was challenging however, the storyline's were easy to follow.
We enjoyed the use of comedy to explore an important social issue, affecting heterosexual relationships.
Overall the series provided a few laughs.
White Noise (2022)
Complicated comedy
This film is promoted as a comedy on Netflix. There are comedic moments in the film and the family is quirky however it's suffers from an overly wordy dense script that is short on funny lines.
I didn't find this film funny I found it fascinating due to its complexity.
The leads are believable likeable characters as too is the eldest son, and it him & Adam Driver the father son relationship who provide most of the entertainment.
Halfway through the film I asked myself why am I watching this film? What was the hook? However I decided to see it out - perhaps the climax would change my mind. Nope it didn't.
I liked the concept but overall watching this film for me was a laborious task.
Marcella (2016)
Lead Actor mental health case study
Good script, believable performances, great editing and cinematography, however the lead actor's characterisation pushes the credibility of the series. The lead character has severe mental health issues yet she continues to work in the police department?
The removal of the black female characterisation of the police department to place white supervisors in charge shows a lack of appreciation for diversity in leadership roles.
Well shot, with authentic dialogue coupled with great lighting and cinematography maintains integrity of the story.
Child actors are great.
I enjoyed parts of this series.
The Nightingale (2018)
Gruesome Australian Masterpiece
Powerful visual storytelling complimented with compelling narrative. A gruesome historical story about murder, rape and trauma in the colonisation of Australia. This film has a challenging theme, however cinematically it's a masterpiece.
Interceptor (2022)
low budget, low production value
A Chris Helmsworth cameo can't save this high concept low budget espionage thriller. Interestingly, in the blurb on Netflix, says Australian Military Film genre- whatever that means. One good aspect is the innovative way it creative team exploited the age-old war mongering storyline of Russia-US to get this bomb to the screen.
Revolver (2005)
Freudian Fantasy
Cinematically impressive, imaginative, stylist, however, the storyline is convoluted and has structural problems, otherwise an interesting filmic exploration into an aspect of psychoanalytic theory.
Sorjonen (2016)
Great psychological Drama Series.
The Bordertown series is well-written and the performances are believable - characters that are true to a life. The series transports you to a real place, with real people. The pace is alluring, a good story unfolding as it draws you in to its Finnish - Russian world. No car chasers, shootouts, no macho-gunslinger hero cops, or gangsters- just murder intrigue and mystery like a good who dunit?
Kari- has likability due to his values and his unnatural Detective abilities. A great performance, backed up by Lena. The two standouts. Recommended!
Army of Thieves (2021)
Good plot, good action, new Hero!
Really enjoyable film, funny moments, tension, romance, escapism. The Ludwig Dieter character is warm and likeable.
This film and Dieter and Gwendolyn's romance storyline encouraged me to watch Army of the Dead.
This one is better imho.
Creative enjoyable entertainment.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Good set, good acting, tension.
The acting was good, some of the characters drew an emotional response and there was tension. The setting was well done, post-apocalyptic and made the film more believable than a vampire film probably should be in modern times.
Curiously, was there a misogyny theme or just a bad guy doing bad stuff to women, for filmic effect?
Otherwise good filmmaking.
Keen to see the third movie.
Girls with Balls (2018)
Is this film misogyny masked as dark comedy?
I'm curious -how did this film about hunting and killing women get funded in the era of ME2? My partner and I watched this thinking it was going to be a funny French garden, a female empowerment film. However, we soon changed our minds, shaking our heads, asking wtf? And how did this film get made?
The scene in the male hunters cabin showing women captives begging for their lives, in front of hooded men with knives and guns terrorising the women by making them to choose who is next to die, really wasn't funny imho. The sexualised butt shots and the pole dancing scene, funny how?
The earlier scene showing all the women squatting down urinating near to their campervan after a long trip, seemed crude, and degrading of women. Or Was those scenes supposed to be dark and humorous? Such an awf storyline, men hunting and killing women for sport.
Sure some of the women fight back and one women becomes a female killer too, for no real reason. We love French films, but not this one. At the end of the film we asked debated about the genre. I think it probably belongs in the category of
Misogyny masked as dark comedy.
Replicas (2018)
A good 'What if' film.
Keanu is always interesting to watch, so that's a plus, and the story or idea is good and if you suspend your disbelief that such a sequence of events could happen the film is enjoyable. And that's how I watched this film, from the perspective of - imagine that actually happened, would I do what they did? Of course the answer will be different for everyone. Overall the film kept me interested to want to see the ending. A film about life and death, and humanity quest to live forever.
Special Correspondents (2016)
Telling the truth to comic effect- great satire!
Special Correspondents is a thought provoking film, that has some hard hitting truths about the production of reality but Gervais's command of comedic writing allows the audience to laugh while 'hopefully' becoming a little bit more critical in accepting the news as truth.
